Seattle is getting the NHL's 32nd team in 2021. The significance here is that the majority owner is David Bonderman, Fort Worth resident and co-founder of Fort Worth based TPG capital.

Why not Houston?  I recall that the NHL failed once earlier in Seattle.  Is it possible that the Dallas Stars claim all of Texas as its territory and would feel threatened by a team in Houston?

What I find to dislike about the workings of professional leagues is how they carve out territory and prohibit the chances of some cities to have a team.  The recent announcement from the inventive XFL to claim both Dallas and Arlington (Tarrant County) is ridiculous pomposity; and is as pompous as FC Dallas excluding all of the western half of North Texas from fielding a team and it is the reason why I choose to withhold my support for any team that is not directly associated with my hometown.

About soccer attendance, which is not so much tv oriented as it is stadium oriented,  a FC Fort Worth would be quite strong in Tarrant County because of the passion that residents feel here for their hometown;  and it would present a great opportunity, with the aid of the City,  to redevelop Ridgmar Mall.

The NHL's previous foray in Seattle was more than 40 years ago and the team never played a game. Funding issues arose and prior expansion teams in other cities were struggling. The Pacific Northwest is a much more appealing market than it was 40 years ago, the NHL is more popular beyond the Midwest and Northeast, and Seattle fans have given rampant support to football and soccer in the last decade. I wouldn't read much more into the Seattle choice other than they've strongly pursued a NHL or NBA franchise in recent years and the league wanted in the market.

I believe the distance between Seattle and Vancouver is shorter than the distance between Dallas and Houston.  Houston has a new FC stadium and support their NFL team.

Are you able to opine on Houston?

The Seattle group is also privately financing the arena for $850 million. https://www.kgw.com/...n/283-621544319

As far as Houston goes, people are basically speculating that the Arizona Coyotes will move there, especially seeing that they will be in the Central Division now with Seattle coming to the Pacific.

  1. When I read it, your stand strikes me as kind of pompous.  (Takes one to know one?)
  2. What evidence do you have about the passion of Tarrant County to support a sports team?  The only recent example I've seen was the Cats, which was lukewarm at best.  And why do you think Ridgmar Mall's private ownership would be interested in a public-private venture?

I follow they NHL and I haven't heard that particular rumor.  Source?

EDIT:  Nevermind....a bit of Googling found some chatter.  Apparently the owner of the Houston Rockets would be interested in an NHL franchise.

Yeah, that's been the among some fans around here, and it's getting louder with the Coyotes moving to this division.

Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I wonder if guys like Bonderman or Bass brothers and others ever think about bringing pro sports here?
