Sounds like FUMC downtown has some big plans. There are 4 phases, the biggest parts of which include expansion space on the existing parking lot NE of the building which will include children areas and other church related facilities, demolition of the existing church foundation building to the East which would be replaced by a multilevel garage and church offices.
First United Methodist downtown expansion

Been slow on the forum so figure I'd post some thoughts and maybe some discussion going.
I perhaps worry that it will form a bit of a superblock, there's not much of a north-south option from Macon to Cherry street, but perhaps not a big deal.
The garage should be a nice addition, the church plans on leasing out spaces during the week so that is nice. I wish they'd be able to sell off or further develop some more of the empty blocks, which the garage could perhaps compensate for. As the Upper West side grows and the western part of the downtown core moves Westward (Such as Frost tower) the church is right in the middle of all that. They basically have 8 blocks (one of the largest landowners in downtown). The campus has a bit of a barrier feel to expansion of downtown.

Over the years, the church really hasn't combined very many blocks into superblocks. They did abandon Florence Street between 5th and 7th to combine those two blocks of parking into one, and Florence was abandoned on the west side of the sanctuary to provide safe access from the parking lot on the west. The church property has always been in the middle of the street grid shift in downtown and several larger blocks have been a result of the two grids intersecting.

I just wish they would just build a bigger Mission right on 3rd & Henderson next to the church and just give the other lots up.

The First United Methodist Church presented a major addition to their church building to the Downtown Design Review Board. There hasn't been much publicity about this project but the church has given me permission to post some renderings and the Site Plan. The Site Plan is a PDF file and you can view it here:
First United Methodist Church Site Plan
Below are some of the renderings of the project. The first image is an overall from the roof of the YMCA.
The next image is a closeup of the addition.
The central circulation space within the expansion is a rotunda and it is depicted on the exterior with a dome. Here is a view of the floor of the rotunda with a Christmas Tree.
This is a view from the second floor.
There is also a cafe inside the building, just off of the rotunda.
One of the main spaces in the addition is a Multipurpose Room. This is the view inside.
The building is only designated as Demolition Delay, so this addition did not have to go before the Historic and Cultural Landmarks Commission. The only city board to review this case was the Downtown Design Review Board. Another interesting part of this addition is that there will be only minimal demolition of the existing building done in order to build this project.

I just saw that the First United Methodist Church Expansion was filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on Friday. The project is listed at $15 million and the scheduled start date is in October with completion scheduled for the end of 2021.

The church had the official groundbreaking earlier in the month. Seeing a construction fence, a trailer, and actual digging doesn't surprise me. I'm glad they have finally started. The new section of the building will be a great addition to their building.

There seems to be some action on the most north-east block. Passed it on a walk today and there's a construction trailer up, plus this big hole:
The site plan shows a playground for this lot (bounded by 3rd, Burnett, and 4th). Did the plan change, or would they need to excavate so deep to build a playground?

It is for an electric vault and it will serve more of Downtown than just the church.

Immersion? You must not be familiar with the Methodist church.

Again, this is not going to be a swimming pool, or a baptismal, or anything that holds water. It's two electrical vaults that serve both the church and the western end of Downtown. I had the honor of viewing some photographs of it today.

Isn't FUMC responsible for bringing Fort Worth the World's Largest Rubber Duck at Trinity Park in July?
