Looking at the original renderings for the City Place made me wonder more about how renderings looked for some of the other built or unbuilt buildings in the city. I spent a little bit browsing the web searching for some things and compiled some of them.

Some in particular I'm wondering if anyone has or knows of existing,

-Bass Hall

-777 Main

-Convention Center

-Sundance east/Bank One building

-Radioshack HQ

-TRTCC Campus

-Burnett Plaza

-Water Gardens

-Banc One tower

-Landmark Tower

-Really anything. Especcially highrises.

Here are some I have

The original Tandy Center concept was to have at least 4 towers.

I'm kinda glad those two extra Tandy Center buildings DIDN'T happen...

It's pretty interesting, the bit about the Worthington looking like Tandy's idea.

The Worthington was sort of Tandy's idea.  The master plan called for a hotel to be built on the site of the old Leonard's Department Store.  Part of the hotel was built there.  The original 20 story hotel is probably about the height that would have been needed to have the same sized hotel on one block, minus the ballrooms.  That plan saved the Stripling's Department Store building immediately to the east.  The way the Worthington came into being is that the Bass Family put up the Stripling's block for the hotel.  Eventually, the hotel took up three blocks.  Two were owned by Tandy, and the other owned by the Bass Family.  Even though the hotel turned out shorter, the facade does match the Tandy Center, and you can tell that it was a part of the master plan.

It's interesting how much of a 180 turn the Bass family seemed to make between 1984's D.R. Horton tower, and 1991's Sundance West. Prior to 91, all of the downtown buildings they were building were pretty terrible from an urban standpoint (The City center towers and their two massive garages, the Worthington) DMSAS's blog mentions Schwarz and Bass meet in 1983, and the effect is obvious.

I wonder what Sundance's masterplan would look like had David Schwarz never come into the picture.

I think the biggest reason in the change of direction is that Sid Bass was in charge when the Worthington, the two City Center towers, and the garages were built.  Ed took over things after his Caravan of Dreams was successful in 1983.  Sid's architect was Paul Rudolph.  Rudolph had designed his now former home in Westover Hills and the Sid Richardson Physical Sciences Building on the TCU Campus.  I think Bass had been involved with that building.  Sid Bass was also in charge of the initial two block restoration of Sundance Square, and he was running things when the Burk Burnett Building was restored.  The Jett (now Mural) Building was also in the collection at that time.

Austin, I really do not know what Sundance's Master Plan would have looked like if Schwarz had not come into the picture.  Sid Bass might have stopped with the first two blocks of Sundance and the Burk Burnett Building.  I don't know.  We still would have probably had the plaza built, since that has been in the Downtown Master Plan since before 1983.  I'm sure we would have more parking lots than we do now.  However, if the Bass Family had not become such major players, we might have other buildings and project from different developers.  We also might have fewer restored historic buildings, as well.  Back then, and still today, most of our downtown buildings are not locally designated as local historic landmarks.

I've also wondered why the Bass towers and Worthington were built so pedestrian unfriendly despite the family's efforts to revitalize downtown.

Paul Rudolph has been known as a brutalist architect, yet the work that he did in downtown in the early 1980's was his most friendly to the pedestrian.

There was talk at one time about a third tower.  It was supposed to be diagonally across from Tower II (D.R. Horton Tower).  Within no time, Garage 2 was built on that site.

Time to clean the dust off the plans for this one; and even though it is an old design, it looks remarkably contemporary. It would be great if the project were to break ground after all this time.

Oh, wow...

Those are all beautiful, but they don't look like arenas. They look more like airport terminals or major train stations... something more transit oriented.

Imaging seeing a copy of Pioneer Tower in Victory Park.

What bothers me, right or wrong, is DMSAS' repeated attempts to reconstruct WRMC Pioneer Tower in a number of their projects.  DMSAS has used Pioneer Tower in their projects in other cities and it would seem to me that having done so tends to have watered down the original which in itself is regarded as an iconic American piece of architecture.

Again DMSAS is poised to reconstruct PT in the design of the new arena at WRMC. The nearby juxtaposition of the mini PT towers with the original which gives me pause; and since DMSAS will probably do the design of the Sundance's boutique hotel, the possibility of them reconstructing PT in the heart of downtown is a sobering thought.

I know that I'm going off topic, here.  Rename, you call the Will Rogers Pioneer Tower as an iconic American piece of Architecture.  It is not legally protected against demolition, except for a 180 day demolition delay.

I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of Progressive Blogs/Panethos.wordpress; however, in their blog is included Pioneer Tower among San Antonio's Alamo and a dozen other icon structures located in cities in North America. Yes. PT should be protected.

Rename, thanks for jogging my memory.  I now remember when that list was published.  I did not question your source.  My comment was to make that the building is not designated as a City of Fort Worth Landmark, and it could be demolished.  That's why it has been placed on Historic Fort Worth's Most Endangered List on a periodic basis. My comment has thrown the discussion off topic.

Knowing just how strongly you believe in preservation, I rarely if ever would second guess you because of your steadfast dedication to protect the historical treasures of Fort Worth.

It is a rather frightening thing to consider Fort Worth without the Pioneer Tower. I know in my own childhood, and likely, countless others, PT and the circus are inseparable.

There was a garage planned for that site and the rendering has been re-posted here on the forum recently.

At one time, wasn't there a garage planned for the old Greyhound terminal site across 9th? Seems like I remember that and that there was some XTO involvement.

Austin, thanks for posting these old renderings.  I'm not going to comment on all of them because there are many.  However, I do have comments on a few.

The Fort Worth Club Tower:  I'm pleased to see that the architects actually opened up the parking garage more.  The rendering has more blank walls on the Taylor Street side than what was actually constructed.

The W.A. Moncrief Jr. Building:  I think that was proposed for the south side of 8th Street between Main and Commerce.  It appears that Washer Brothers (demolished to build General Worth Square) is the building on the right.  It also looks as if the old Continental Trailways Bus Station is the building on the left.  If those two buildings are correct, then my guess on the location is also correct.

Chamber of Commerce Building:  From the buildings in the background being the Star-Telegram and the Electric Building, it was proposed where Tarrant Savings built their HQ.  The old Tarrant Savings building became the Star-Telegram Classified Building, and it has since been demolished.  The Frost Tower is now rising on that site.

Meacham's Building:  If you searched the site, you would find this building on the northeast corner of 5th & Houston.  It was originally built in 1925 for Sanger Brothers Department Store.  They left in 1929 for a bigger building they built one block north.  From '29 until 1947, it was called the Transportation Building.  In 1947, Meacham's relocated from the old City National Bank building to this location.  The rendering was done to show the minor remodeling done to accommodate the store.  It's current name is the STS Tower and it will be fully restored to house support functions for the new Autograph Collection Hotel by Marriott in the Sinclair Building.

Unknown Building at 6th & Main:  I believe this was the original design for the Fort Worth Commercial Club building that was built in 1915.  The building was scaled back in design and was constructed on the northwest corner.  The final result is now the Ashton Hotel.

Yeah, some of those are pretty terrible, especially given that ballpark aesthetics were headed in the classic direction at that time. That was a good find. The only one I remembering seeing back then was the Lake+Flato design.

Curious rendering of the convention center. Before the Omni and after the south expansion, but also showing the east annex removed but the curve in commerce  still there. The rooftop garden is also interesting.

Well, the Hilton Hotel Annex turned out very close to the rendering. It's just a shame that in order to build it, they radically altered the original 1920's design.  All of you preservationists will probably hurl objects at me for the following statement.  It is also a shame that it was included with the original hotel building in the designation as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.  The owners, who are renovating it into an apartment building, want to use the State Tax Credits to help fund the project.  They have been told by the Texas Historical Commission that because state money is involved, they can't alter the 1968-69 façade.  If the owners wish to give up the money, then they can do with the building as they wish.

I'm gonna say the NW corner of 4th and Throckmorton.  The building on the right side of the rendering is where Oliver's is.  At first I was thinking the building has the wrong number of stories, but if you visualize the area above the awning as a screen in front of the second story windows, it kind of works.  Here's a slightly different view.

Here's one I found in an old city economic study for a convention center hotel. Instead, we got the Omni. I think that turned out well.

Here's one I found in an old city economic study for a convention center hotel. Instead, we got the Omni. I think that turned out well.

This would be nice... in Arlington... or Frisco... or Plano... or Irving...

Long story, short: I'm glad we got what we got.

Such a shame the Trinity Turnpike never got the monorail and/or passenger rail option...

Here's some old rendering from the compitition to design the Ballpark in Arlington. Some of the losing entrants shown include Micheal Graves, Martin Growald, and Lake + Flato.

I remember those proposed renderings for the Ballpark, and some of them were quite ugly.

That design would be difficult (if not impossible) to retrofit to modern security standards. Where are the check-in areas? Same as the waiting areas?

Back in those days, there were no metal detectors or other body scans, and non-traveling visitors could walk right up to the gate to say goodbye to people leaving, or greet arriving flights. What you're talking about wasn't even a consideration back then.  If you watch movies from the era you can see a lot of hellos and goodbyes right at the gate entrance.  That was pretty standard.

Doohickie, I remember those days.  Also, my family and I participated in these practices where everyone went to the gate and waited on the plane to depart.  If I was taking off, my family would stand at the windows and watch the plane leave the gate and then stayed to see a few planes take off.

Im only 34 and this was the norm I grew up with too. I was 17 in 2001 when you could no longer get past security without a boarding pass.
