It was mentioned on the forum a while back that AQHA was looking to move here.

This weeks precouncil agenda,

5. Briefing on Ground Lease Agreement with American Quarter Horse Foundation at Will

Rogers Memorial Center – Jay Chapa, City Manager’s Office

ST's Luke Ranker posted an image of the proposed building on Twitter. It is in front of the Western Heritage Garage along Gendy.

https://twitter.com/...215886619697152

He also says,

The office portion of the building would pay taxes. Construction is expected in spring 2021. The council will vote on it in a few weeks

Very eye catching.  I think it will be a nice addition to the Cultural/Exhibition District.

Does this mean they are moving out of the building on Montgomery, opening up another spot for development?

My initial see of the rendering of the AQHA Museum @ C&ED is that I was being reminded of the African American Museum in Washington, D.C. -

nmaahc.jpg

I think if it is reminiscent of the AAM-DC, then I reiterate that it will be eye catching.

My mistake, its the Quarter Horse News on Montgomery, not the Quarter Horse Association.

I believe the architect (in these renderings anyway) is Gluckman Tang

They have several notable museum and gallery projects around the world

https://gluckmantang.com/museums/

It has not been said whether or not they are locked to the project but if they've done this much I'd assume they are.

The AQHA should be given credit, if indeed, Gluckman Tang is the principal architectural firm. The association has demonstrated an awareness of its future neighbors and thank goodness it is not a prefab.

If it becomes a piece of the C&ED, it will certainly generate conversation which is something I feel the museums themselves like to generate.

It's not often a new landmark is the cities signature district is proposed. This is an exciting potential addition, I'm glad to see AQHA going for a beautiful and unique design from a renowned architect. I expect it will blend in nicely with the Kahn's and Ando's of the area and continue to grow the cultural reputation of the district and city, even if it is a particularly niche subject matter.

Isnt that City owned land ?
Why is a private organization (Quarter Horse Association) allowed to build on it ?
Id prefer if the bldg were located on Montgomery.

It is, but they will be using a ground lease. I believe the museum portion was said to be nonprofit, but the offices portion will pay it's share of taxes.

It reminds me a little of the DeYoung museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

I believe the best location for a new museum is within or along the "Museum Camp .

If there is a problem with the proposed museum because it will use publicly owned land, then it does raise some issue.  The museum also further raises the profile of Fort Worth in the Agri/New West Sector.  Also, if the museum somehow shields the garage's profile on Gendy Street,  then I am happy to say that it is a two for one deal and I am happy to make an exception regards to public land.

By the way, the 1700-1701 Montgomery Parking surface attached to the NCMHF and the FWMSH would make an ideal site for a regional Smithsonian Museum.

The updated renderings are exciting.  I can see how AQHA Hdqr/Museum will become an instantly photograph worthy building. Lets hope that AQHA decides on Fort Worth.

It looks like they've been doing some geotechnical drilling on the site for this over the last couple of days...

No offense, Amarillo, but the proposed Fort Worth building would be sharper than the one the American Quarter Horse Association has up there:

I do. It is the just the kind of avant garde structure that should go in a cultural district and not a "run of the mill" building.

Maybe in the flesh it will look better to me, but when I look at that I see a square pile of dung.  I can't picture it aging any better than this.

The brown reminds me of the Home2 Suites they are building close by.  I agree with Doohickie, that brown is a travesty.

Well a rather expressive tone do you think?

When the rendering of Home2Suite at University@Lancaster was unveiled, besides tbelieving that it is a poor location for the kind of purpose that extended stay inns typically fill, I also thought it would turn out hideous.  While I still believe the location is less than desirable,  to my surprise and delight, the H2S did not turn out to be anything approaching an eyesore.

I think the AQHA will surprise everyone as being neither a pile of dung or a travesty.  As for the color brown, it has always been one of my top three go-to colors.

It isn't perfect, but I think it's unique and will do a great job of complementing the architecture in the area.

It will be interesting to see what the brown material is. If it's copper or some sort of metal it could be really spectacular. Think the Irving Convention Center or DC's African American Museum.

Edit - and if it's more of a cloth material might echo the US London embassy.

It's not really for me either.  I find the screens over the windows, with a gap a third of the way up, very off-putting.  It feels.... unfinished.

Usually this means some progress is being made.

I do hope that the AQHA is headed our way.  There has been some efforts on the part of Amarillo to persuade AQHA to remain and the organizational leaders have been coy of their intentions.  It is a little known fact that AQHA was founded in Fort Worth and subsequently moved to Amarillo. Returning to Fort Worth would actually be a homecoming.

Having not followed the most recent news about the potential move to Fort Worth, it would appear that Fort Worth having already passed some a tax package for the AQHA, the geotechnical drilling is a sure sign that AQHA has begun the relocation process.

The edited addition to post#29 makes me even more excited about the design.  Would have been a utter disaster if the design had been a pre-fab.

If it is anything like the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, which I hope that it is, it should be more of a metallic copper color. I think it should look awesome within the confines of the Cultural District.

This I would agree with.

With the one exception in my opinion of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Museum as being rather uninspiring, you will have a building next to a Legoretta, and in the immediate neighborhood of a Kahn, a Piano, a Johnson and an Ando.  Add to this our own Hedrick and a Fuller.

I say a Tang is welcome to the collection.

I think the color contrast is good in this particular area.  If the proposed building is the same bland color as the adjacent structure we might all be complaining about mediocrity.

Waaay back in February michael boucher landscape architecture posted they were working on the project.

https://www.boucherl...pe.com/newspage

Kendall Heaton Associates are also involved, probably as the architect of record. They have worked here before, with The Modern, Kimbell and Pier 1 building all in thier portfolio.

http://www.kendall-h...-of-fort-worth/

According to the lease contract, construction was to begin spring of 2021. We will see.

Some more details on this now-cancelled project, shared by Gluckman-Tang.

Gluckman Tang designed a new, 85,000 sf building including a museum and administrative space for a world-wide association. The facility was to be located in the Cultural District of Fort Worth, adjacent to the Will Rogers Memorial Complex.

The 5-story facility included two levels of museum and three floors of administrative space. The Museum contains a lobby, exhibition space, a large-scale, double height event space, library, and small theater. The third level includes a planted roof terrace that will be shared by the visitors to the museum and the staff of the Association and will accommodate events overlooking the Will Rogers complex and downtown Ft. Worth. The upper two floors contain a mix of open offices, collaboration areas, meeting rooms, and private offices, tailored to the short term needs and long-term flexibility desired by the association.

The building is clad in a perforated, copper-tone anodized aluminum rain screen over glazing and opaque aluminum panels, which will act as a sun screen and animate the façade with a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The innovative concrete structure uses ‘band beams’ to minimize structural depth and volume of concrete, allowing for efficient floor-to-floor heights in both the exhibition floors and offices.

I'm glad this was cancelled.  I don't even know what to say about this.  I guess maybe they saw photos of the Tower when it was covered in plywood after the tornado and thought "Hey that would make for an interesting design element"
