Came across some an article about a new concept in apartments and would be interested in hearing what some thoughts are, especially from the younger ones we have on here. Basically it is doing 4-6 bedrooms with common shared spaces for Kitchen, bath, living and such. I think it is very interesting but not sure people would be open to "sharing" common spaces that much. That said, it could be a very economical way to reduce rent rates for those needing affordable housing but would like to still be closer to work in a downtown or close in environment as opposed to having to drive for an hour  and a half from having to live in the burbs.

I kind of think this would work best if there was service/maintenance/cleaning for the common areas by personnel employed by the building owner, basically something like hotel maids.  Otherwise I think you end up with 4-6 people arguing with each other about who needs to vacuum this week.

Interesting idea on cleaning, most all of us had that slob room-mate at some point ... One of my thoughts on the downside, was you have a say 5 unit module and 3 of you are pretty studious shall we say about your job, school or whatever and lead a pretty low key life and you wind up with two party animals so to speak. On the upside, I can live downtown and be in walking distance to my job for 800 bucks a month and at that rate the owner is still making abut $2-2.5 PSF in rent rate. Hard for me in my grumpy old man age to see things from the "youngers" viewpoint. I like to think I am pretty open minded but When I talk to some of them they tell me i'm just a cranky old man now who doesn't understand how the world works now! Damn, when did that happen! lol
