With news that the existing Fort Worth Central Library is for sale and no replacement is planned, I wanted to ask the forum.
-Where do you think a new library should be?
-What should it look like?
-What services should it offer?

It might help to review the current (2018) Fort Worth Library Strategic Services Plan and then think about how the Central Library could contribute.

How about building it on Panther Island. Across the River from the TCC Medical campus... from earlier designs of the campus it had a building that was directly north and I believe had a skybridge link... this is more of a fantasy vision I would like... I think something along the River near the new City Hall building would be perfect as well

Does anyone know what's going to happen to the personalized bricks? Hopefully they'll be transferred to the new library or other branches.

I can say me and my family visit a Fort Worth library at least 2x each month. Prior to COVID we'd go take our then young toddler to story time, or craft activities. During COVID we loved that they offered a zoom-type story time as well as a zoom-type led craft activities for kids.
We're always checking out new books to read our now 4year old every day, we occasionally pick up a movie or two, and also use the e-reader.
We've also taken advantage of the day passes to the Botanic Garden you can check out from the library.
We really like the ability to browse the entire library catalogue online and then select whichever branch we'd like to pick them up.
like most city services, not everyone will use them, but the library is a GREAT tool and I'd argue we should be seeking ways to make them more inclusive and welcoming spaces for people of all different interests.
As for what the new library should look like, or what services could be features, as I have on social media, I'll reference the new central libraries in Calgary and Helsinki as inspiring models.

I think visiting and being inside it should be an experience. But quality over quantity. A huge building with fake neotraditional elements that has the bland character of a 1990s high school is not what we should build.
Things I imagine might be:
Special attention paid to the interior lighting. Shouldn't all be fluorescent lamps in boxes in the ceiling.
Lots of "pod" areas off a main walkway for people set up and study or work. I realize that homeless people will make a mess of this but that's a problem that needs to be dealt with on its own.
A decent number of classroom type spaces because going forward in the future that's what libraries will do more of rather than just lend books.
A workshop area where you could check out things like tools.
Decorate the interior with local art?
You know how North Park Mall has those planters that kids climb all over? Something like that.

The proposed central library size is larger than the North Richland Hills library and roughly the same size as the Arlington central library.
It might also be about the size of the current central library basement, as that 250,000 number includes the entire unfinished second story.
Since Fort Worth has numerous libraries, it doesn't need to be bigger than the Arlington central library. But, I hope it's nicer than other FW libraries. In general, libraries in suburbs are nicer than FW libraries.

Most of my visits to libraries in the previous decade (pre-pandemic) have been to study or do homework, as I didn't want to do those at home. I rarely ever checked out books.
Here's what I'd like to see in a new library:
-Personal study rooms. Lots of them. Most libraries that have them don't have enough.
-Rolling chairs instead of wooden chairs at desks, computers, and in study rooms.
-Large windows and lots of natural light.
-Comfortable seating areas near the large windows.
-Multiple stories (so people can go to a quieter level if the main level is loud).
-Dylan
