#150026 FW's Next Area to Revitalize?

Posted by McHand on 31 December 2023 - 04:10 PM

Maybe this thread should read the next area of Fort Worth that should be revitalized.  My choice would be the west Camp Bowie Boulevard strip from, maybe, Alta Mere to 820.  Of course, this kind of dismal-looking commercial strip is not unique in Fort Worth. But the same could have been said about West Seventh before its 2010-era renaissance.  What brought this to mind was the other day when my client and I had lunch in the vicinity.  My client owns commercial property in the area and he was looking to buy a building for sale.  I showed him the old Gentleman's Cabaret & Restaurant.  He wasn't impressed.

It is interesting that Freds Texas Cafe and Magnolia Motor Lounge both decamped to roughly this area.

It was never built to be walkable, so a revitalization to its midcentury car-centric glory would be interesting.

The project is tied to funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, which must be allocated by Dec. 31, 2024, and spent by Dec. 31, 2026. The mayor and council still plan to use the federal funds for the Evans and Rosedale Redevelopment project, Nettles said. The city hopes to get a new partner involved in the project by early 2024, he added.

Is the federal funding the reason that individual businesses can't develop parts of the land piecemeal? For example, if Aldi wanted to construct on the south side of Rosedale across from the plaza, would the federal grant prohibit that?

Sprouts is way too overpriced, Aldi would be nice. I don't ever see Aldi stores pop up in urban areas though.

Maybe H-E-B could amass small cheap lots and build down there, like how they built in the third ward across 288 from the Med Center in Houston.

Aldi would be a good candidate. It has a smaller footprint, which I think would be better for the area.

Stir Crazy sold to the owner of Leaves Book and Tea Shop

I hope they continue to thrive under Tina Howard.  And I hope whatever Robbie takes on next she is successful.

I love the idea of building a business so strong that you can turn it over to a trusted colleague and pursue new ventures.
I have no doubt Stir Crazy will be as strong as ever. (Ill be happy as long as they keep making granola!)
Best of luck to all.

#135185 Fort Worth Parks

From Fort Worth Report:

The pool would also be no more than 4 feet deep, Penn said.

Right now, Forest Park’s lap pool is a little more than 5 feet deep, and its diving pool reaches 12 feet.

If the make Forest Park Pool only four feet deep, the only public place to swim in deep water, or dive, will be Burger's Lake.  Yes, there is a pool at the downtown Y, but you have to be a member.

Why is the city treating this pool as if it only caters to parents with small children?

#117250 Fort Worth Bike Sharing Program

Posted by McHand on 24 February 2019 - 10:56 AM

My understanding is that the pedestrian advisory moved to continue not allowing dockless Bikeshare companies in FW (and allow Bbike to be the monopoly) but would like to pilot a dockless electric scooter program.

What does everyone think?

I used B-Cycle and Lime scooters, in addition to walking, on my recent stay in downtown San Antonio. Their are advantages to both. The scooters are smaller and fairly unobtrusive, but you can go further and faster with bikes. I didnt see a lot of people using dockless bikes, and frankly, they were in the way.

B-Cycle should increase the locations of docks in town. I think they would see ridership increase.

I think dockless scooters on streets like Magnolia & South Main would have a traffic slowing effect, if people can mindful to ride in the street and not the sidewalk.

#114316 Ridglea Presbyterian Church

Posted by McHand on 23 October 2018 - 08:12 PM

We are moving to Southwest Blvd. That property has been purchased. We are currently meeting at the former John Knox Presbyterian at Jacksboro Highway & River Oaks Blvd. It is a very interesting split level Tudor revival style, also currently for sale.

Great care was taken to save both organs. They are both in storage. As far as I know, the chapel organ will he moved to our new location. We tried to find a buyer for the sanctuary organ, to no avail. It is in storage for future use.
The stained glass was removed prior to demo, but last I checked, the location of the glass was unknown. At the very least, it was not demoed with the building.

People shouldnt have to go to the suburban part of FW to find more reasonable rents.

After three years of waiting, in August ground broke one the Victory Forest Recreation Center.  It will open in January.  http://fortworthtexa...ictoryforestcc/

Edit: I don't know if this qualifies as "best," but some of us Southsiders are really looking forward to this!

#98839 Ridglea Presbyterian Church

In church now. Church voted to sell, and now the Presbytery must approve.

The truth is, the building has become more of a liability for the membership over the years. As a preservationist, my heart is broken, but as a musician at RPC, I understand the motive.

When I hear "Midtown" I think of Manhattan, and if it's another town's Midtown, then I think they're trying to be like Manhattan.
