I thought Bud Kennedy's column in the S-T an interesting take on Jerry Jones giving AT&T naming rights to Cowboys Stadium.  I guess it'll take getting used to saying "AT&T Stadium."  In my opinion, it's one more step away from this Arlington sports facility being identified with the Dallas Cowboys, especially so since Jones has lucratively promoted other venues there.

Yep.  A bit icky to me.  It's like the American Airlines Center and the AT&T Arts District in Dallas.  You'd think more thoughtful corporations would quietly support public venues and name them after heroic or iconic citizens or just let them be named for what they are.  I, and maybe just me, am not more likely to use a product because it's name is on a stadium or concert hall.

The stadium may have been built for a team from Dallas, but that Dallas team isn't playing there. Due to it's location, the stadium represent two major cities (D/FW) when it's not hosting that D team. Also, FW is the nearest big city to the stadium by a couple of miles.

And you forgot to add that when that team gave Dallas the first opportunity to build a new stadium and bring that team to that city, it refused to do so.  Arlington stepped-up after both Irving and Dallas had declined.

AT&T Stadium is a backup site for the Super Bowl next month, in case it can't be held in Los Angeles. Similar to the Rose Bowl a year ago.

From everything I've heard, it sounds like this was something that was pre-determined and there is no ongoing dialogue about moving the game.  I would assume that a lot of the ancillary activities like the NFL Experience and the sponsor financed events wouldn't be able to follow the game or would at least be heavily dependent upon available facilities.  This sounds great for exposure, but would have less of a financial windfall than getting to host the usual way.

One big question mark I heard yesterday: how do they pull off the security side of this on short notice?  I know people that were involved in that aspect in 2011 and that was a plan that was more than a year in the making.

Not just security details, but external events and parties in the Fort Worth-Arlington area. As one of the Fort Worth volunteers for the prior Super Bowl in DFW, I know a lot of long-time organizing was necessary. I would hate to be in charge of planning for what may or may not happen.

That's what I meant by "ancillary events".

On the other hand... who controls "Texas Live!"?  Can they pretty much use that and Chocktaw Stadium for their events?

I doubt finding facilities will be as much of a problem as finding the people to make the events happen.

As these February ice storms seem to be becoming a regular occurrence here, I wonder how much this affects the chances of another DFW Super Bowl. Im sure this is something the SB committee looks at and makes Houston a much safer bet than DFW.

Oh, Houston will get more chances to host simply because it's just a better host city in general. Ice storms have little to do with it because they didn't mind going to New York, Indy, and Detroit and Minneapolis multiple times.

New York, Indy, Detroit and Minneapolis are accustomed to & can navigate ice & snowy conditions. The storm that was a disaster for the SB here, would not have shut down these cities at all. Im not even sure that SB storm would have registered as a bad storm in those cities. So those cities will remain viable for the SB.

Dallas (DFW) has the precarious position of being in the sunbelt, yet still susceptible to winter storms that shut down the area. And the most likely month for ice storms unfortunately is the same month as the Super Bowl.

Atlanta also had an ice storm in 2000, they're just about on the same longitude we are, and they got another Super Bowl some years later...

I just think it has more to do with DFW's (let's say) lacking in competent planning/partnerships AND the fact that Arlington doesn't even attempt to gain some form of public transit.

In addition to the renovations, the field will be temporarily raised for the World Cup games to accommodate the larger field size.  The field level suites and several rows in the lower bowl will be blocked.  Here's a photo with a mockup of the adjusted field height:

It is.  I remember reading 15 feet a couple of weeks ago.  It will be interesting to see how they accomplish that, especially since it's likely that they'll bring in a natural surface.

in the past I've seen several venues operate where they use pallets to create the base and the sod across the pallets, it allows for drainage away from the turf and helps act like soil to soften the ground instead of rolling sod on concrete.  In this case i would imagine they'll use stage decking to build up the height since its easy to level, and then pallets across the deck.

I would imagine then they'll replace close to 25-30% of the sod after each game

Is this normal or purely reactionary on AT&T's part?  Aren't they going to lose a ton of the lower bowl seating?  I'm guessing the seats with the black fabric represent the seats that are obstructed.

I don't think there's anything reactionary about it.  The field isn't wide enough by about 25 yards if I remember correctly.  Even losing those seats, the capacity will be at or higher than the largest stadium in Qatar.

I guess if they run out of room to sit, Jerry can pull out the temporary seats again.

I heard a mention last week that one of the rumored renovations to AT&T is removal of the large video board with a replacement that is similar to the ring board over the field at Sofi Stadium.

I guess that is 13-15 year old technology currently in place isn't it?  In the A/V world, that probably feels like a lifetime and a half.  I would think some of the latest video processing equipment would need to be replaced at least every 10-years if not sooner.  I seem to recall the (City-owned) giant façade lighting / display system on Dallas Omni originally was installed as a cold cathode system to make a giant screen saver, but was soon after upgraded to full LED as that technology quickly advanced.

The Ballpark in Arlington was built in 1994 for around $190 million.
