#152812 Southside developments

Posted by ramjet on 10 July 2024 - 03:41 PM

Well, this is the great news of the day!  Four Day Weekend is moving to Stage West according to the Fort Worth Report:

(Not sure this belongs in this thread, so John feel free to move it.)

Pulido's closing all locations.

https://www.star-tel...l#storylink=cpy

The Pulido's on Pulido Street (off of Vickery) has reopened.  We had a late lunch there today.  They did a really nice job on the remodel.  The decor is still a bit rustic, but with an all new and clean feel to it.  They completely redid the bar and patio area, too, and it looks terrific.

The food was really good, and it didn't appear that the prices changed all that much.  Also impressive was the size of the crowd in the dining room at 3 in the afternoon.  The bar area was full.  I think this version of Pulido's has a very bright future.

Mule Alley is the perfect location for that concept!  I wish they'd open one downtown.

Slowly chugging along. Will be a nice addition once done.

Just ranting a bit.  Chugging along is generous.  This plaza has been under construction for over 7 months.  I walk by this site every day.  2-3 occasional days workers are there, then 3-4 weeks, nothing.  The site is trash strewn.  The construction fences often blow down and stay down for weeks.  Is the City of Fort Worth and Downtown Fort Worth Inc., and the other stakeholders not monitoring the progress?  I'm with TLA and hope it turns out nice, but it has been the sloppiest, ugliest, most poorly managed, and most abandoned looking construction project I've ever seen.  I'm guessing no accountability for a low-bid contract.  Hopefully, things turn around.

Wild Salsa at City Place appears to be reopening. Lots of painting going on and signs saying now hiring.

Could this development portend a revival of the Oven and Cellar concept across from Wild Salsa?  Same owner.  Sign is still up after all these years.

This is great news.  Good for the 'hood!  Their website mentions the Fort Worth location will be opening soon (towards the bottom):

Not new, but we tried Maria's Mexican Kitchen yesterday.  It's pricey (check before tip was over $100 for two) but OH MAN is it good.  The best enchiladas I ever had.  The food is very fresh.  The sides (refried beans and rice) were served family style and the refried beans were a revelation; I didn't think beans could be that good.  My main entree was seafood enchiladas with shrimp and blue crab, and three different sauces.  Each one was delicious.

And unlike Quince across the way, they had plenty of dishes that worked for my wife's dietary constraints.

I agree - they are also my favorite enchiladas. The bummer is, my wife and I have been 3 times and have had issues with bad and/or really slow service each time, so we've stopped going. I would still tough it out for the great food, but the service is a deal breaker for my wife. How was that side of it for you, Doohickie?

Edited to add: I really liked their on the rocks margarita. The mole enchilada is verrry good, but also very rich, so I like to get the enchilada sampler dish.

Tip for Maria's:  eat at the bar.  We've eaten there several times and the service at the bar was much better than at the tables for us.

#151773 State of Downtown FW

It's that time again. DFWI held their annual meeting yesterday at the Omni. I have not seen the reports hit the web yet but FWR covered the event: https://fortworthrep...-work-recovers/

KRLD had some excerpts on the radio from Andy Taft's speech too, he was joking about the repaving downtown.

I'm glad downtown Fort Worth has so many positive things happening right now.  It's been interesting to watch living down here for the last year and a half.  Some U.S. cities aren't faring so well post-pandemic.  There is an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today about downtown St. Louis's "doom loop."  It's behind a paywall but you can get the idea in the picture and first few sentences.

#151740 Eclipse Fort Worth goes dark April 8, 2024

I was a bit ambivalent about the eclipse until I went on to the roof of the T&P garage and witnessed it.  I had never experienced a total eclipse.  It was spectacular and unique.  I think it's interesting that the Forum started discussing this way back in 2017.  Time marches on...

Jon's Subs on West 7th and Lamar has a notice on its front door saying they have been locked out for failure to pay rent.  Must have just happened because there were full sandwich trays in their refrigerated case.

Not really surprised.  It never looked very crowded when I walked by.  The time we went, the sub bread fell apart as we were eating our sandwiches.  I'm guessing inferior bread in a sub shop is not a helpful element of the business model.

I don't know what this means, but the "For Lease" signs are down in the Jon's Subs space and the lights were on.  Didn't see anyone in there today, though.

Jon’s Subs reopens April 15th.  I hope they do well!

There was a famous Chumley's in the West Village in NYC for a long time that closed during the pandemic.  I wonder if that's where they got the name idea.
