I'm surprised the biking enthusiasts among us aren't chatting about the possible new expansion of the Trinity Trails to downtown Fort Worth.  The S-T article below is about the city getting a grant for the expansion project.

I've heard about it.  It will be pretty cool.  I've also heard that there is a possibility that down the road they may put another bridge across in the Mistletoe area (near the Forest Park RR bridge).

Kinda hard to get too excited for something that won't be completed for two plus years!

Good grief it's a sidewalk people- Two years to design and build?!

If it was a toll trail it would be up and running in 6 months.

One of the reasons that I haven't brought it up is that I left town early on the morning that it was in the paper to go cycle in the Davis Mountains.  I returned late Sunday, and this is my first chance to be on the computer.

The mayors of several area cities got together with the North Central Texas Council of Governments staff a few days ago to discuss connecting the trails in Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving, Grand Prairie, and Dallas to provide a 64 mile continuous trail between downtown Fort Worth and downtown Dallas. Below is the link to CBS 11's story:

30 million? Seems kind of expensive, but I do like the plan.

A little off topic, but does anyone think it would be a good idea to start numbering bike trails, sort of like how highways are numbered?

$30 mil to build 24 miles of trails. Sounds astronomical. You can build a mile of road for $1 mil. Sounds like another typical over-engineered over-anaylized DFW construction project.

Not sure what this one here in Tucson cost, but it's over 100 miles...would be neat to have a multli-use path similar to this in Ft. Worth.  Need to get the demand for it though, at least that's what I understand.

Struhs Construction is now building the Airfield Falls Trailhead, just outside the gates of the Naval Air Station.  The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting on the story.

The Airfield falls plan looks real neat. I love the the use of the wings and tail from the plane.

Does anyone know what's going on with the trailhead on Forest Park at the Phyllis Tilley bridge? It looks interesting but I haven't seen it up close.

Volare, according to what I have learned, the reason for the very high costs of extending the trail are the construction of numerous bridges to span the creeks that dump into the Trinity.  The bridges are very expensive in comparison to construction of the trail directly on grade.

Austin55, they are rebuilding and upgrading the trailhead at the Phyllis Tilley Bridge.  There were several dangerous situations after they constructed the bridge and this will eliminate those conditions.  Also, this is a part of the work that is going to be done to extend the trail southward to the zoo on the east side of the river.

I drive past Rotary Plaza almost everyday and see that lone green picnic table. Occasionally it will be moved to a different spot under the canopy. When I see it I think "Table for one...family".

I really hope they plan to add a few more tables.

I've observed the progress of this cool little "plaza" over the months while biking over the pedestrian bridge and connecting to the cemented path northward (which I get off at NW 10th to go downtown).  I thought this was nicely done by the city.

So the TRWD is almost a year behind schedule on a little project to install a parking lot and a few picnic tables.

This is the same group that is taking on a multi-billion dollar project to reroute a river?

The construction is pretty tucked away unless you go looking along the trail. They've had a huge crane over there for the last week or so.

This is wonderful for Mistletoe Heights neighbors crossing from the east bank to the west bank, and vice versa.  But the east bank is still dysfunctional as a complete bicycle/pedestrian Trail from downtown to the Southwest Boulevard Bridge.  I would like to take the entire completed Trail on the east bank sometimes but particularly during Mayfest when the park part of the Trail on the west bank is blocked.

I think one of the reasons for this bridge and hopefully a trail that connects it with the Tilley Bridge is to provide a bypass around Trinity Park during Mayfest.

As far as the south bank goes, it will never connect all the way from downtown to Benbrook due to the Colonial Country Club.  However there is a viable route on the south bank.  Starting from the new bridge, one can follow Colonial (or the paved sidewalk) to University.  Cross University at the light and continue east on Colonial to Lynncrest.  Right on Lynncrest, then a left on Hartwood which brings you to the north ends of Overton Park East & West which are good routes to the south that parallel Hulen.  If you want to get back to the river from Hartwood, either turn right on Overton Park West, follow the sidewalk past the tennis courts, turn right after going through the "keyhole" in the wall at the edge of the park, and follow the path along Oak Park Lane to Oak Hill Circle.  Turn left there, then left again on Stonegate Blvd., follow that past Hulen (where it becomes Clearfork Main Street) and then turn left to get on the trail.

Alternately you can follow Overton Park West South from Hartwood, past Bellaire and turn right after crossing the creek, and follow the path along the creek out to the river.

It's a lot of words but it's pretty simple to ride it.

Oh, and I might also mention that the path along the south bank starting from where the creek flows into the river goes all the way to the new Waterside development, and as they build the next phase of the development it looks like the trail will be extended on the south bank all the way to the Bellaire & 183 low water crossing.

I think it's quite possible that in the near future, this route will be available to ride from downtown to the low water crossing at 183 and Bellaire, and back to downtown:  http://www.gmap-pedo....com/?r=7083419. It assumes that the new bridge will be connected by trail to the Tilley Bridge on the east bank, and that the new bridge will also connect to the parking lot of the Forest Park Miniature RR.

It also assumes that the trail will be extended through the entire Waterside development all the way to the low water crossing at 183 and Bellaire (which I believe is already in work).

The return route follows the east/south bank of the river, except for where it goes around the Colonial CC.

I believe the connection from the new bridge to the Phyllis Tilley Bridge on the east bank is in the immediate plans for construction.

I believe the road construction of Recreation Drive in Waterside also includes construction of the trail on the east bank of the river connecting through the development.

By the way, that is a great map.

The Waterside portion is not complete.  There is a gap between the two points of where the old river channel connects to the current river channel.  This is roughly from the intersection of Arborlawn & Recreation Dr. on the north to the current trail intersection with Bellaire Dr. S. (Future intersection of Recreation Dr. and Bellaire Dr. S.)  This is scheduled to be constructed with the next phase of Waterside.  This phase is already under construction.

The trail gets from the low water crossing by Mellow Johnny's to Waterside, but doesn't yet get to the low water crossing at 183 & Bellaire.  When the second phase of Waterside is done I'm sure the trail will connect all the way.

There were signs on the trail saying the connection from the trail to Bellaire would be closed for construction starting today, although a friend claimed it was still open as of tonight.

Yes, the second phase of Waterside is supposed to complete the trail on the east bank of the river.  As for the closure of the trail at the connection to Bellaire Dr. S., I have noticed that when the signs are put up for the trail closing, it may be a day or two before it is actually shut down.

I don't think there will be a way to get to the RR parking lot from the new bridge. There is no way to cross the original oxbow portion of the river without having to cross the other RR bridge and I don't see any plans for them to do so because it would require another bridge constructed parallel to the smaller oxbow bridge. I was hoping that would have been in the plans but I walked around there last week and there is no way to circumvent the oxbow heading south to Forest Park without going onto private property.

Informative map.  Departing briefly from the bridge connection topic...some time ago we thought that the 10th Street bicycle lanes would be upgraded as part of the construction of the new Trinity Terrace tower (at least there was a newspaper article about it).  The TT tower is completed and the road barricades are gone.  But what happened to the planned upgrade of the bike lanes?
