Recent S-T article discussing the National Humane Alliance (NHA) Fountains (by the way, nice to see coverage on local historical topics.)

....fountains so horses and other animals could have access to water in urban areas in cities across the United States. The five -ton granite structures have lion head spouts that fill a bowl that are six feet in diameter, with smaller bowls at the bottom meant for dogs, cats and small animals.

The fountain discussed in the article was once located on the triangle that is north of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Downtown, next to the John Peter Smith monument.  For those of you who have been on my tours about Bronze and Stone (our public art tour), I mention that there were four horse watering fountains.  I also mention that the JPS Memorial was associated with one of those fountains.  Until Megan Cardona contacted me, I had no idea that one of the fountains was special and different from the rest.

As mentioned in other threads, I'm really impressed with the level of reporting lately.  If they ever run out of content ideas, you could literally take a map of John's website and the forum, throw a dart at it and have newsworthy content for days.
