Inside of Walloons (Magnolia/Hemphill) from my morning bike ride. Looks just about ready to start hiring and prepping to open. The interior work does great justice to the historic building.

Bold prediction:  It won't last 6 months.

I'm predicting that just because of its location.

Also, "French Japanese"... this is the first thing that comes to mind:

Does that mean that Belenty's, or possibly Lettuce Cook (based on the Google map pic) is closing?  Or are they adding a coffee shop?  Or is Belenty's taking over Lettuce Cook?

Based on the street address of 3522, it appears Lettuce Cook is out and Vida Cafe is in and Im not sure if Bentleys is also running Vida or if Bentleys is listed as tenant.

Belenty's is adding an Italian Restaurant and Coffee Bar called Vida Cafe.  It is where Lettuce Cook was located next door.  Here's a link to Bud Kennedy's article in the Star-Telegram:

I think Concrete Cowboy is no more.  The last couple of time I have driven by it has been dark and I can see chairs stacked up inside the windows.  Not surprised.  Last time I was there it was empty.  The food and service was below average and 2 groups looked like they were about to get into a brawl inside the restaurant.  I quickly paid my bill and left once I noticed something might go down.

I didn't see anything for 2901 Crockett yet but there's a new Mexican place called "La Cabrona" supposed to be going in at 2933 a few spaces down from there on that side of the block but across the street from Terra:

I keep seeing Facebook ads for an equipment liquidation auction for Macaroni Grill on University, so it closed at some point.  I got a catering order for work from there earlier in the year and the food was great.  The dining room was a ghost town shortly before noon on a weekday.

The Walloon’s sign lit up at night looks fantastic. I’ll try to take a photo next time I’m by it.

Based on their email newsletter, they are past their soft opening. Now fully open for lunch and dinner.

This week mostly through random chance I went to both Le Margot and Walloons.

Le Margo was Monday after an all-day at a new customer and getting some rough news about a beloved neighbor and we were just going to check out the space by visiting the bar area, but ultimately were joined by my co-worker’s wife and her friend and stayed for dinner.

Interestingly, they are open for lunch and through the whole day.  The bar was already fairly full, and there were a a great number of staff working.  There was a photographer there also.  Graham Elliot was there clearly working a great deal in the kitchen: cooking, perhaps teaching, coming over to the bar to evaluate cocktails, just keeping very very busy — he was in no way being a “celebrity chef” that was just walking around shaking hands.

As soon as you walk in, it feels like you’ve been transported somewhere else.  The design of the space; the sophistication of the staff, the delicious aromas coming from the kitchen.   We had some drinks and a Tarte Flambee (basically a flatbread) clearly made from top-notch ingredients.

My co-worker was going to meet his wife for dinner anyway, and managed to somehow get us an early table for dinner even as the place was filling up.  Although French food might not be my personal first choice, the food was excellent and the service was great.

What was most interesting to me was how transported I felt being there.  The restaurant and bar are were 100% full; relatively early on a Monday.  And although this is perhaps odd sounding, not only was the space very different, but all of the guests seemed less familiar; as if I was in a different city.  This restaurant is in my neck of the woods, and I didn’t see anyone who looked familiar and really felt like I was in a European city.  Everyone at the tables around us was clearly enjoying the food and the experience.

And it was such an unusual experience.  I have only been there once; and I have no idea if it is or always will be this way, but if you could have the experience that I had, and want to take a European vacation in a strip shopping center in SW Fort Worth, it is definitely worth a visit.  Even more if you have an affinity for French cuisine — but there is a cheeseburger on the menu if you prefer (an elevated version).

Thursday I started at the bar at Walloons.  It was also very full.  I recognized a lot of folks working there because we frequent Piattello, a sister restaurant.  The bar is a nice U shape.  Things were pretty hectic, but no problems.  It was fascinating to watch this device that could blow smoke into a bubble over some specialty drink.  We had two appetizers and some oysters (they have a full oyster bar on the other side of the room). The food was excellent, with very fresh ingredients in interesting combinations.  I look forward to having a full meal there sometime soon.

They have very convenient parking in an adjacent garage that they validate for. I know that some people don’t like the parking thing, but is so nice that there is more on Magnolia these days.

The place was full of folks clearly enjoying their time there.  Definitely also worth a visit.

It is interesting to contemplate why some restaurants are closing and others are opening and running at capacity even on ordinary weeknights in the middle of summer (I’m sure the newness is a contributor).  It could simply be a consequence of an economic bifurcation and with our increasing population there are enough people to support higher-end places that have pricing that allows good margins, while the operating model of mid-tier doesn’t work as well right now.  In the long run, hopefully we end up with a city that has all kinds of options.

Both of these places are great additions to the mosaic of restaurants in our city.  And I am very pleased that we are seeing this kind of investment here.  Both are backed by existing great chefs in our city.  There are 5 or 6 of these prolific chefs.  I wonder what that has to say about what having insider-information about the market and margins here does, compared to what outsiders might think about our city’s market potential and their willingness to invest?

Maybe that needs to be model for everything in our city:  to outsiders, we are in the shadow of the other regional cities because they are looking at things on paper.  It might take Fort Worth insiders who understand our city more deeply to actually invest in our city.  E.g. these local chefs; and in a different area and scale, John Goff with Museum Place and promoting the A&M downtown campus.

Here's one that's going after many, many years.  I drove by it heading south on Williams Road from Camp Bowie Boulevard.  On the left side, you've probably seen this old former house that became a barbecue sit down and take out.  Then, it went from one pub to another.  Nothing historical here, not like the Berry Theater, but I grew up on this side of town and it was a fixture. My dad used to pick up some barbecue ribs at this place.  About 20 years ago, a guy from Australia named Gilley or Guinness (?) ran a pub there for a brief while.  Lately, a guy named Randy(?) took it over.  It had a nice outdoor wooden patio.  Today it was being demolished.  Sad. I'll miss it a little, but not much.

When Ive run by Effin Egg the last few days, I noticed they were actively working on it. Cant imagine it will take long for it to open.

Theres a newish breakfast taco food truck behind Wabi House, called Cafecito. I havent tried it yet, but heard good things.

Looks like vegan fine-dining restaurant Maiden will open June 1: https://fortworth.cu...l-diner-ps1200/

Could it be the reincarnation of this:  https://www.yelp.com...tina-fort-worth

I noticed the request above is for a reinstatement.  I think the old version was next door to the Flatiron Building in the old Park Central Hotel.

Mambo's old version was inside the Park Central Hotel.  One reason for this address might be that at one time, the Flatiron Building and the Park Central were both owned by George Cravens.  Maybe the address is a holdover.

Savory Restaurant Fund completes its 10th investment, a majority-interest investment in The Sicilian Butcher based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Created by Chef Joey Maggiore, Cristina Maggiore and Flora Tersigni The Sicilian Butcher is completely unique, exquisitely delicious and the team has created eye-popping average unit volumes. This investment includes ownership in sister company The Sicilian Baker, which is attached to each of the restaurants serving decadent Italian pastries, a build-your-own cannoli bar and specialty gelato.

We are hitting the ground running with locations at lease in Dallas and Houston as well as sites identified in Las Vegas and San Antonio. I cannot wait for everyone to indulge in and enjoy this brand like we have # #restaurants .

That’s too bad. Their 5 seat bar was a nice taste of Japan.

I’m sure there’s a few restauranteurs who would love that space.

They were cited by the Health Department on August 12th for unsanitary conditions:

The dumpling place next door, Pantry on Magnolia, is really good and could definitely use some more space.

Bud Kennedy isn't exaggerating when he refers to "the little-known Funky Town Food Hall" ... It's difficult if not impossible to find on Google and the main search result is a convenience store in another part of town.

My Google maps search yielded the same result. It is nice to see Cafecito updated their own Google business address in maps. Pretty good reviews too:
