Whataburger announced today that they are going to scrap the iconic A-Frame design on their restaurants.  The new locations will have it completely missing.  There are plans to remodel the existing restaurants, which will be changed to lessen the impact of the existing A-Frames.  The orange and white color scheme is to remain.  Below is a link to KSAT's website which has a rendering of one of the new locations, already under construction.

There are already some new Whataburger locations without the A-frame.

I've also been to a few Whataburger locations that have renovated their interiors. I don't like the new interiors... the blank brown tile wall behind the ordering counter is boring and dull.

I don't know, I think that's a mistake.  I watched Austin's video and I get why they're doing it.  I think in the long run it won't hurt the brand, but I just hate that all these burger joints are beginning to look alike.

Thanks for the link, Austin.

Yeah, thanks for the link.  That was informative.  And depressing.  The first comment in the link John posted captures it:

that's just the same pre fab look that all the fast food chains are adopting. There is no "imagining" involved. That is straight off the rack.

I thought they had already abandoned that look in new buildings.  The one on Tarrant and Davis in North Richland Hills has the new look with a small a-frame awning on the front and I remember seeing a newer one in Destin, Florida that had a completely different look:

I think the new locations have been a mix.  The fairly new Whataburger on Jacksboro Highway, just southeast of the intersection with TX 183 does not have an A-Frame.  The entrances have a short pitched roof and the awnings are the alternate orange and white stripes.  The fairly new location in Benbrook has the A-Frame turned to the side.  The one at Sycamore School Rd. and I-35W is similar in design to the one in Benbrook.

I don't like the new design.  The A-Frame set the buildings apart from the rest of the fast food chains.

For me, my appreciation of the corporate fast food venues when Jack in the Box did away with their "Jack" in the air signs.  I can recall in my youth eagerly looking down Belknap Street for the Air Jack.  The excitement of seeing Air Jack always thrilled me.  And locally, the retirement of the Chuc Wagon was a let down that I am only now able to fully appreciate...ditto for Taco Bell!

The A-Frame set the buildings apart from the rest of the fast food chains.

The A-Frame looks quaint but not cutting edge.  Straight from the 1960s.
