Update: Evidently this did not pass, due to it being submitted and those that are paid to support rider’s rights, didn’t know of its existence so it didn’t get the backing it needed to pass. But it’s being resubmitted for next year with backing.

I’ve been told by the herds of people in my office that the new riders courses are not sure if it’s legal or not.

My experience with this law has been in California, where much the same legal situation exists, it’s technically allowed but whether or not it’s legal is a grey area, from what I’ve been told anyway.

I pose this question, partially for educational purposes, since it seems to infuriate some motorists that are already stuck in traffic, to see a motorcycle putting along and passing them.

I’m assuming most motorists don’t realize it’s "soon to be legal" in certain circumstances, I think the assumption that it’s illegal coupled with traffic frustration has resulted in some rather unfortunate encounters for some of my fellow riders. Some of which include, people opening their car door, tossing out hot coffee, flipping cigarettes, crossing the center line to block, “I believe failure to maintain lane is a traffic offense itself,” and a good number of explicative…

You'll have to go out to see the actual update since it does not format well here.

Did not know that. But really, aside from the danger that angry drivers may pose, is it really that dangerous? And isn't the point not to be in traffic?

I'll tell you what law I'd like to see: a vehicle noise ordinance. Anyone driving a loud vehicle should be ticketed. You want to rev your bike or tuner car? Save it for the track and spare the rest of us.

It can be a bit hazardous for a biker passing between two rows of cars to have a driver open their door right as the biker is about to reach them.

I understand the small cars with coffee can mufflers tuned to a frequency which ensures everyone’s attention is grabbed, can be annoying but I have a hard time holding a grudge perhaps the serve a purpose other than vanity but my first reaction is that it’s a “look at me upgrade.”

Since there are no fender benders on a motorcycle, items utilized in the name of vanity on cars can be a life saving upgrade for a motorcycle. Yes, I do hear some using them in a “look at me” fashion, but they can be used considerately. I’ve owned a number of very quiet foreign motorcycles and time and again had someone exiting a parking lot, pull to a stop, look one way, then turn and look me right in the eyes and pull out in front of me. I learned that people are looking for autos not bikers and a motorcyclist sometimes just doesn’t register right away. But when you have pipes tuned to a low frequency, the type that isn’t necessarily loud to the human ear, but seem to pass right through car windows, regrettably through house windows too, but then again so do sirens, people tend to look twice and stop. They also have kept me from getting run off the road by someone carelessly changing lanes and is all around fairly useful for letting motorists know I’m in a lane next to them.

it's not like a patrol car can sqeeze its way thru just to follow and ticket the bike. unless it was a motorcycle cop, but looks like you dont gotta worry about that here in TX
