I found this blurb in today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The City of Fort Worth is looking to buy the Zipper Building for expansion of city offices.

"In addition to the Water Gardens renovations, about $7 million in bonds will be sold to fund the purchase of a building -- known as the Zipper Building -- at the corner of Monroe and 13th streets.

The building, which features a large mural of a zipper, will house city employees from the finance and technology departments.

"We are busting at the seams at City Hall," Garrett said.

Renovation on the building could start in May or June and some city staff could move into the building by October or November, Garrett said.

This would free up space at City Hall, 1000 Throckmorton St., to develop a one-stop permit center, where residents and developers could get information and permits for new development."

Will the city repaint the zipper as unzipped for the purposes of transparency and full disclosure?

That zipper has been there a long time. Who originally painted it on the building?

Wow... does this mean that the plans to turn the old post office into City Hall are off?

And if they still need more space after this, they could move into the Santa Fe Warehouse (Railmarket). They're already locked into paying rent on it for another 12 years.

The building was originally a zipper factory. It was the largest zipper production line in the country.

Just kidding  I actually have no idea what the heck that building is or was. I've wondered ever since I was a kid.

I was hoping that the city might move on from the Zipper building, which is really not an attractive or contributing building to the ever-increasingly desirable Lancaster corridor. Doesn't sound like that will be the case anytime soon. From next week's council agenda.

On April 13, 2000, MCImetro Access Transmission Services, LLC d/b/a Verizon Access Transmission Services (Tenant) entered into a ten (10) year lease with three (3) five (5) year lease renewal options (City Secretary Number 47864) with Fort Worth TelCo Center Limited for the first floor office space in the Zipper Building, 275 West 13th Street (a/k/a 1111 Monroe Street), Fort Worth, Texas for use of their telecommunication operations. The City purchased the Zipper Building on May 10, 2005, (M&C L-14052) and the lease with Tenant (successor to Fort Worth TelCo) was assigned to the City. The Tenant is exercising the third lease renewal term provided for in the lease and it expires October 31, 2025. The Tenant and Property Management Department desire to amend the lease to provide for two (2) additional five (5) year renewal term options, at the end of the third renewal term, to allow the Tenant to continue to provide telecommunication services. The two (2) renewal terms are as follows: Fourth Renewal Term: November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2030. Fifth Renewal Term: November 1, 3030 to October 31, 2035.

While not attractive from an architectural design perspective, the Zipper Building is occupied and is apparently being put to good use.  We all wish the same could be said of the T&P Warehouse.

It's very unfortunate this building will be staying for a while.

And to think, Fort Worth was close to replacing this building with a grand City Hall & Library... and Pier 1 Tower could've been used to attract a large company.
