Monterrey, less than 100 miles from the Texas border, has been building some very impressive structures recently.

Metrpolitan center, a cluster of highrises.

Torre KOI, a 917 foot tower as part of a mixed-use complex that also has a 561 foot tower.

The recently opened Torres Obispado is the tallest tower in Latin America at 1,002 feet tall.

Another proposed supertall, Torre Rise, would surpass Obispado, being 1,496 feet and possibly becoming the tallest building in the Americas outside of New York City.

I have been to Monterrey a couple of times and they have been building tons of new buildings...  the Macroplaza and river walk are really cool outdoor areas.

last year Scott Beyer of "Market Urbanism" had some blog and twitter posts about Monterrey etc
While personally I find about 60% of his eyeroll inducing the other 40% I think is solid.

Monterrey would be an excellent end point for a north-south HSR route through Texas.

Wow... I did not expect to learn Monterrey has shiny glass skyscrapers and suburban-style streets.

Looks like I need to spend some time exploring Monterrey on Google Maps.

It has an insane setting surrounded by massive mountains. Seems like a very cool place.

If you zoom a little to see the gigantic Mexican flag on the hill in the far left of the amazing photo above, that site (Palacio de Obispado, the former Bishop's Palace) was one of the several battles won by General William J. Worth (yes, that General Worth) in the Battle of Monterrey, part of the US Army northern Mexican Campaign of the Mexican-American War. Second Lieutenant US Grant also fought in that battle. There is an amazing archive of that war on the top floor of the UTA Library.
