Yeah, me neither unless it is an homage to two defunct theaters of the past: The Grand and The Berry, then it would say loads about the cinematic "creds" of this couple.

Well, they both still exist, so I'm not crazy about taking their names.  And then there's Granbury the city.  The name is just too overloaded.  Git yer own name, dag nabbit.

Yeh that is a very confusing scheme. I hate naming things after places where they are'nt, IE Berry. If I hear "Grand Berry", I'm heading towards the TCU area.

When I hear this name, I think of three things.  The Grand Theater on Fabons, The Berry Theater at Hemphill & Berry, and a theater on the town square in Granbury.

Overreaction!  For me, there is nothing objectionable  or controversial about the name.

I applaud these entreprenuers and their visionary idea to bring something new and exciting to Fort Worth.  I think it is laudable that they are reaching back to instill the names of past cinemas in the City and that they are bringing those cinemas once again into our conscientiousness.  For posterity,  I hope that within the foyer of GBT will be a photo exhibit of all the defunct and still standing cinemas in Fort Worth' It would be a lovely exhibit and art itself.

I am going to praise both the owners and their spirit for bringing us Grand Berry Theater

That's my point:  The name evokes too many other entities.  It's overloaded.

Laudable would be restoring the Grand or the Berry.  This is just a ripoff of the names for cheap publicity.

This is harsh and misplaced criticism.  What has this couple done that is so egregious or that others in town have not done in taking some historical interest to market their product?

So does one also think that Sundance Square is a "ripoff" from the name of the Cassidy Gang for cheap publicity?  The Cassidy Building?, etc.

The corpses of the Grand and Berry are still lying there vacant, and Granbury is still a city, last I checked.  Appropriating the name of a dead outlaw is nowhere near the same thing.

Also, the dead outlaw did have ties to Fort Worth, and if that famous photograph of the Wild Bunch had not been taken on Main Street, they probably woudn't have been chased to Bolivia and caught.

I am missing the justification for the uproar over and for the public flogging arising from the naming of a theater, a names that are used many times in a number of cities across the U.S.

If two cities might want to object and I seriously doubt that they would, then it would be Grand Prairie and DeBerry and not Granbury. I think the Granbury analogy is juvenile and without merit.

Why should GBT be characterized as "appropriating" anything?  In English are the words Grand or Berry trademarked?

Was there an uproar when the name of a demolished hotel, Westbrook,  was planted on the name of a Sundance Square building?

Yes, the Sundance Kid & Gang had a historical moment associated with the City; and the Berry Theater and Grand Theater have history with the City and that are currently in precarious limbo. In either case, there seems to be nor have there been in similar situations a fuss over the use of naming a building after a historical place or person associated with Fort Worth.

The owners of Grand or Berry can present to the governing regulatory agency their copyrights claims that show there is some harm being done to their ongoing effort to restore either property to its original use. One might take those circumstances under consideration. However, I cannot imagine that they would have a legal case against the combination of Grand Berry in any case.

I do not get why feathers are being ruffled. My words to GBT are "Good luck, good food, good brew and great movies".

This reminds me of the discussion on the use of "Magnolia" by the apartment developer building properties not on the street of the same name.  A bunch of pointless bickering that allows something really nice to get lost in the shuffle.  I could care less what the name is if it provides a quality venue for independent and limited release movies in a more intimate auditorium, a huge need in this area if you ask me.  We huffed it over to Mockingbird Station to see the Mr. Rogers doc at the Angelika on Saturday night because it was the only theater not attached to a mall that offered a decent show time and that theater is a true gem.

My only question about Grand Berry is the size.  A single screen with seats for 50 is incredibly small.  The Angelika and Magnolia locations in Dallas have fairly small auditoriums and they still have seating for 150 or more.

renamerusk, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm not necessarily trying to argue, just communicate my viewpoint. And I've done that so I'm finished on that subject.

I have faith in you that in the end you like many of us will take the opportunity to watch a film and have a brew at GBT. :)

As for names referencing areas where they aren't, I can say when Magnolia Motor Lounge opened, I can't tell you how many times friends of mine would head to Magnolia looking for it when we were venturing out to see Josh Weathers or Sam Anderson play.

Yep.  Confusing.  I somehow managed to avoid that.  I heard about MML early on and actually went there the night they opened so I knew where they were.
