I will be in attendance, barring an aviation snafu, at Will Rogers Auditorium 30 July for a performance by the California Guitar Trio and the band King Crimson. When I was growing up in Fort Worth and cutting my concert teeth on bands like Alice Cooper, Tull, Zepp, Floyd, Clapton etc. one of my faves in the Progressive field that never made it down that way (that I know of) was the various incarnations of bands organized around guitarist and melotron pioneer Robert Fripp that were often billed as King Crimson. I fixed that deficiency 3 years ago at the Dallas Music Hall but I am ready to catch a second dose. The band is one player less that before; Long time REM drummer Bill Rieflin passed away last year, although when I saw him with Crimson he was seated as the only full-time keyboardist ever (since 1969!) The "front man" for the band is a phalanx of three drummers who work together like clockwork, the bassist is tops in the rock field, and the woodwinds guy was there with the first several albums. Quirky, complex, contemplative, powerfully rhythmic, and overwhelmingly melodic at times, I am sorry it took so long to see them live as I was avidly listening to them back 50 years ago! A belated birthday gift to myself... I will be downing fish and chips and British ales afterwards with a few mates at Ye Olde Bull and Bush on (appropriately enough) Montgomery St. afterward.
