Spent the weekend in Oklahoma City, mostly at the convention center and Bricktown.  The convention center and attached Omni opened about a year ago.  Both were really nice.  They sit on the fringe of downtown just to the southwest of Bricktown.  It's a nice area but a little detached.  The area needs a 7-11 or a Walgreen's within walking distance for those of us that get tired of paying $5 or more for a bottle of water or a Diet Coke.  Bricktown is really impressive, but they're hurting as bad as anywhere else with vacant spaces and a lack of staff.  We had good luck Friday and Saturday night for dinner by going with some pretty simple options.  Some of our friends that tried more upscale restaurants experienced very long waits with slow service.  One group had a 7:45 reservation at a nice steakhouse and finally finished at 10:30.

One thing downtown has that we've discussed here: a streetcar line or 2 overlapping streetcar lines to be specific.  Someone remind me again why Fort Worth didn't want something like this?  It's clean, stops every few blocks with a frequency of 12-15 minutes, and cheap.  $3 for an adult day pass purchased at 7:00pm on Friday was valid until 10:00pm Saturday.  Seniors and kids were half price.  The Bricktown loop encircles its namesake and the Downtown loop splits off to hit the CBD to the north.

Other highlights: Scissortail Park is a superblock open space across the street from convention center with an amphitheater, a massive lawn, a dog park, a playground, and a restaurant on one end that was a lot like Shake Shack.  Unfortunately, my busy schedule didn't give me time to do anything more than look at it from afar.  There were a lot of rental scooters in the area, but they seemed to be used sparingly and didn't seem as chaotic as what I've seen in Dallas.  There was a noticeable lack of homeless people around.  I'm not sure what their plan is for keeping them out of the tourist area.  I didn't see more than a half dozen all weekend.  We went to the OKC Memorial last night.  There were 3 people there other than our group and security.  It is a very tasteful and impressive memorial and I would like to go back during the day to see the museum.

A few pis for your enjoyment.

FW has trouble with a rail line because the "Old" guard that is in charge of city politics doesn't want it.  Public Transportation in their eyes is for poor people and why would we want to spend money on a system for poor people to be able to travel outside of their neighborhood and into "ours'

Yes, I know the why.  I was asking a sarcastic rhetorical question.

JBB, do you know if the tunnels are still open downtown?  If so, did you get a chance to walk through them?  I lived and worked in Oklahoma City years ago.  I liked how the tunnels provided pedestrian transit links between the buildings and they were populated with vendors.

I didn't even know about them until I looked them up after reading your post.  It looks like they're still there, but I didn't use them.  The southernmost tunnel connects with the old convention center (now a film studio) that is on the opposite side of the Paycom Center from the Omni and the new convention center.  I was held pretty captive by the event I was attending.  Other than dinner in Bricktown on Friday and Saturday and our quick trip to the memorial, we were in the hotel and the convention center.

I've been impressed with OKC for a while now, their MAPS program is a great way of investing in the city.

Oklahoma City has been fortunate to be a "stand alone" metro area in central Oklahoma.  It's downtown has grown considerably since I was there many years ago.

Oklahoma City seems rather boring. I don't have much desire to visit.

That said, it seems they're trying hard to improve themselves with new parks, a new convention center, and new streetcar lines.

I feel like Oklahoma is like a worse version of Texas, and Oklahoma City is just a much smaller DFW.

But at least OKC tries to make itself a good place to live, that is admirable.

OKC feels like it's doing a great job of investing in itself via public developments, but the private sector just isn't there with a couple of notable exceptions, like BoK and Chesapeake.

Anyone talking about building anything even 1/4 this tall in
Fort Worth?? Anyone???

Edit: how about 1/4 as audacious? Anyone?

For scale, here is the OKC skyline. The proposed tower would be 2.5 times as tall as the Devon Energy tower at left.

I kinda like the weird future where Oklahoma City becomes the spot in the midwest for building supertall skyscrapers.

The developers have now changed their plans, increasing the tower height to 1,907 feet to commemorate the year Oklahoma became a state. That would make it the tallest building in the United States. https://www.dezeen.c...per-tallest-us/

They add 157 more feet like it's no big deal, meanwhile we'd be excited if we got a 157' tall building downtown.

I was originally going to write that tornadoes would give the super-tall engineers something new to plan for, but it seems like they are not as common there any more:

1,907 feet to commemorate the year Oklahoma became a state combined with a goal of 1,776 residential units... these numbers just feel too gimmicky to be believable to me

In Fort Worth, we've had our share of illusory projects.  Remember the 54-floor tower?  OKC may get a new tower, but I think it will be down-scaled.

Ironically enough, I'll be in OKC this weekend and I'm staying across the street from the site of the proposed building.  I don't think it will happen as proposed, if at all.

With all due respect, that's not a good comparison at all.

That's just 14 floors taller than Burnett... OKC's current tallest building is TWICE the size of the next tallest.

It looks dumb enough, already. Just imagine adding something that looks like it belongs in NYC or Dubai in the middle of this.

The tallest skyscraper in America is another step closer to becoming a reality in downtown Oklahoma City
