At least eight fire units surrounded the performance hall at about 2 p.m. to make sure the fire did not spread, fire department spokesman Tim Hardeman said.

Update:

Looks like it was a small incident and taken care of relatively quickly.

I have been watching them put on a new roof on Bass Hall since Monday.

I was taking pictures of it hoping they were going to plant a garden or grass or something up there. Nope. Tar.

As hot has it has been for 2 weeks I am surprised every building doesn't just combust.

Combust? Sure thought that was a word...

They are working on the roof of Bass Hall just as normal today. Looks like everything is OK there. My guess? When you pay a few hundred thousand dollars a year in property taxes you get an extra few fire trucks when someone smells smoke. Sounds fair enough to me...

Aren't theaters notorious for going up like a book of matches?

If they didn't have the port-o-potty, Brian might get a photo of someone doing something we don't want to see. ninja.gif

Looking out my window this morning I noticed flames on the roof of Bass Hall. Grabbing my 20x80 binoculars I realized they were cooking the roof. Don't know the roofing terminology but using huge torches to seal the roof. My question then became, not is there a fire at Bass Hall but, why is there not a fire every day at Bass Hall. Looks like a pretty crude roofing method to me. Surprised they can even get insurance to be torching tar on the roof of Bass Hall. (I wouldn't insure them) Now before all the smart guys point out that it is standard practice and safe, let me admit I am completely without a clue there. Could be the best and safest roofing operation there is. Could be the only way it could be done. I know not. Except how strange it was to see a bunch of flame throwers on the roof. (Would have been a more meaningful photo if I would have grabbed my camera while it was till dark out but that breakfast is not going to eat itself.) 2 photos.

Closer look. (Different pic)

I can only imagine how hot it is on that roof. I brother who is a building engineer in Dallas said he was on last week and he measured 152 degrees. He was only up there a few minutes and left it to the repair guys.

So who decides "when" to call the fire department?

I'm guessing it's when you have more fire below the tar than on top of it.

It was probably considered a commercial alarm assignment which is 4 engines, 2 ladder trucks, 2 battalion chiefs. Building value, tax value, political clout doesn't affect the amount of fire trucks.

It has been a rough week.  First we lose Van Cliburn then Nancy Bass and then yesterday there was a fire yesterday at Bass Hall.

Their ghosts have taken up residence in the Hall.  It is now nicely haunted.

Saw this in the FW Weekly (LINK):

#EmptyBassHall

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, a dozen Fort Worth photographers, both amateurs and professionals, will come together to capture and share Instagram images of Bass Performance Hall, using the hashtag #EmptyBassHall. The photographers will be exploring various areas of the Hall, from underground tunnels, to the belly of the orchestra pit, to secret passages and hidden rooms; many of these areas have never before been photographed.

I meet Mr. Growald a few months ago when he did the Empty Carter. I was a part of the first group to attend that. If you have an Instagram that is the best way to see my shots. He has started a studio and everything, really a treat for local photographers to have a guy like him around. Furthermore interesting, his father is the namesake of Growald Associates Architects, he designed some local landmarks such as the Wells Fargo wedge on N. Main and the Tandy Center.

Excited to see peoples shots from this, curious if any forum members are going to be a part of it.

So I did get to attend this (it was a bit of a secret) and it was a blast! We toured high up into the guts, pretty much everywhere in the backstage area and all the overstage areas, above the dome, all sorts of places. If you have an instagram you can follow me as @austin_gti. Eventually I'll get some uploaded to flickr as well and post them here. The audience here is much different and might be interested in all the technical things we got to see.

A really interesting article on the financial intricacies involved in maintaining the hall that is closing in on 20 years old.

The accompanying photo is a very flattering angle of the building.

Other than the slick streets and a little difference in the amount of daylight, that photograph is not too different than the one used in the listing for the Bass Hall on Architecture in Fort Worth.

Yeah you can tell that your pic was not taken from inside a car and doesn't have window glare. Much better picture than theirs.

Nicely done John.

This is for anybody who has been to a show, are there any bad seats there? I guess I was too late buying tickets and all that is left are the back rows in the upper gallery.

I would say there's no bad seats in the house.  The only time I've sat in the upper gallery was for Jersey Boys and we were within a few rows of the back.  The view was still outstanding.  Relative to the mezzanine, boxes, or floor?  Definitely not as good, but still far from bad.

Paper City Magazine did an article on Bass Hall interviewing David M Schwarz. It is too bad they did not include a photo of the architect.

In May, the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall celebrates its 25th anniversary.  NBCDFW.com has the story.  Below is the link:
