Was having this discussion today... Seems like a lot of tower cranes are up right now. I wonder if there was a certain period where there was more than ever? I remember when Sundance was going up there were 3 in downtown (Cityplace, Westbrook and Commerce buildings) but don't remember how manyt the rest of the city had.

Currently (last updated 5/14/16)

Clearfork - 6

TCU Worh Hills - 2

NWRMC Garage - 2

Trinity Tower - 1

XTO Garage - 1

400 S. Jennings - 1

Hampton-1

Frost - 1

Total - 15

I know for sure Frost Tower has one on the way, and the Hampton downtown will aswell. Not sure if there's any more planned. And there may be some elsewhere (Alliance perhaps?) but I've not noticed.

I just drove by the Hampton Inn construction site this morning and there's a medium-size crane (don't know what else to call it), not a tower crane.  Not sure they'll get a tower crane to construct what is shown in the posted art sign as a six or seven story building.

I was by the Hampton Inn construction site yesterday, and I thought I saw the base for a tower crane at the site.

Updated to add the Hampton. Frost tower's was scheduled to go in today I thought, I didn't see it this morning (was out around 9) but there were some police that looked like they might be getting ready to direct traffic. I'll be back by later.

I noticed the tall crane driving by the Hampton Inn site late yesterday afternoon.  Any news on when the Frost Tower project is to get a crane?

Anyone living on the West side will have to keep an eye out for a crane at Holy Family Catholic, they are building a garage and may use a tower crane but may just use a mobile crane.

Austin, can you our anyone else identify the construction project by crane:  One crane at the construction project just south of I-30 and north of the hospital district; one at that low-rise building under construction near the Summit towers?

The one next to the Summit Towers is the Alexan Summit project, a 5 floor 300+ unit apartment project on the old ACH campus.

The southside one is a new Texas Oncology building.

I'm not sure how many there are, but you could also include the new American Airlines campus which, "technically", is in the city limits.

Wish I had kept track of this better. There are not many cranes up right now. Only ones I can think of are the 3 remaining at Dickies, and they won't be around much longer.

The tower crane is up at the Hotel Drover in the Stockyards.  I was by the construction site on my bicycle yesterday.  The remainder of the work is primarily site work on the building.  However, I did see some rebar cages sitting on the site.

One interesting side effect of the shutdown has been the closure of the FAA Obstruction Evaluation / Airport Airspace Analysis page. No new cases have been input nationwide in 2019. I'm not familiar enough with the process, does this mean that a new project wanting to erect a crane (or gas rig, building, antennea or anything of height) will be delayed?

I'm not familiar with the process, either.  But, I would guess that this is necessary government red tape for getting a crane approved and in place.  And such an obstacle would delay a construction project.

Follow up...I said "would delay" rather than "may delay."  Question: can a high rise construction project such as the planned AC Marriiott hotel downtown go vertical without a tall crane?

[I hope the federal government shutdown ends soon so this becomes a moot concern.]

I believe the AC Hotel crane had already been approved, so I don't think that has been affected.  In answer to your question, a mobile crane large enough for mid-rise construction could probably be used like they did on the Sinclair Building.  That crane was large enough to lift the steel up and over the Sinclair Building and then was able to drop the stair sections down into the light well of the building.  Austin55 would have to tell us if they had to receive permission from the FAA to use that crane.  If permits are required, then they probably couldn't build the AC Hotel without one.  It would delay a project on a true high-rise because those mobile cranes can only get so big before they have to be more permanent like a tower crane.

Sinclair required a crane.

It was the tallest thing approved by the OEG last year.

Near Southside currently has one operating tower crane (The Cooper) and two more have bases installed and are just waiting to be erected (Cooks garage and Hudgin's Rosedale apartment). Assuming Justin Tower gets one soonish, there will likely be 4 tower cranes in Near Southside at once. There could be even more if big projects like Katy Station get going soon.

Currently 7 operating cranes in central FW,

1 at Hotel Drover

1 at Home2 Suites

1 at AC hotel

1 at TCU hotel

1 at Cooks garage

1 at The Cooper

1 at Hudgins Rosedale

There might be one going up at the new apartment in Clearfork, Justin Tower will likely require one soon. Both projects are already in the early phases of construction.

I was at Clearfork at lunch.  The apartment garage is being erected with a mobile crane.  The apartments themselves are a 1 story concrete podium with wood framed upper floors.  Therefore, you can count this crane out.

I never know with those big apartments. Some use them, others don't.

They are pretty far along with the apartments at Clearfork, that's why I don't think they will be using a tower crane.  If I have time, I will run over there tomorrow at lunch.

I've been seeing a mobile crane right near I-30 and I-35 and just yesterday I noticed it's for an apartment building. Is that Broadstone Southside? It appears to be just south of the freeway, very close.

I guess the deciding factor if "Dallas Doughnut" apartments need a crane is just if there's space for a mobile one. There's also an oddity that some, like The Cooper, have built their garage without one and then add a tower crane.

That's correct, it's just putting up the garage right now.

I wonder if Jefferson River East will require one?

There is a crane at Medical City Alliance at 35W and North Tarrant Parkway. They're adding two stories to their existing building.

Here's a Google Street View image from February: https://www.google.c...!7i16384!8i8192

EDIT: I somehow used the words "there," "they're," and "their" in two sentences.

American Airlines, still has two working cranes up and working. The hotel looks to be topped out, and its in the classic T fashion.

Arlington, has one crane up on 30 and Center. It looks like work has stopped or slowed down. Two Cinder blocks towers are up with a foundation in place.

Charles Schwab, has one working crane, all buildings are topped out.

MCA, hospital is topped out as well.
