A view from General Worth Square
Posted 11 September 2022 - 05:50 PM
I now have this weekend's construction photos. Formwork is almost in place for all of the 13th floor. Some rebar has been placed for the columns on the 14th floor. One of the stair cores has the column rebar in place for the 15th floor. I am not posting a photo from the NW corner, since it now requires an extreme wide angle picture. I do have a lens that will cover the whole building, but the vertical vanishing point is very severe.

It looks like it's now the same height as the neighboring annex.

Austin, your drone photos of this project are great.
I do have this weeks ground level photos and now the first amounts of glazing have been installed on the lowest level of apartments. I changed my location for the view from the southwest to show the glass on the facade.

The building is now getting too tall for a shot from 8th & Commerce without a super wide angle lens, but I was able to take this photo. I had originally planned to take a photo from the west, but Main Street was closed off for Main Table, and I didn't have a ticket, so I wasn't allowed over there.

Finally, I have the back side view from 8th & Jones. Even though it is not the front of the building, this view gives a lot of information.

For this week's photo, I took Austin's vantage point and took my photographs from General Worth Square. This overall shot from behind the Kennedy Memorial is a great place to show the Commerce Street elevation. More glass has been installed on the residential levels.

This next wide-angle photo from the western block of General Worth Square really tells a story. The building has most of the form work in place on the 15th floor. This level marks the half way point in the overall height of the building. It also shows that floor slab for Level 16 is roughly the same height as the roof of the building core penthouse on the new Le Meridien Hotel. It also shows that Deco 969 is not too far from being as tall as the Hilton Fort Worth Hotel (Hotel Texas).

i like how the additional height nicely frames out Worth Square

The sky was fantastic on both Saturday and Sunday.

The glass looks pretty nice. Excited to see the rest of the facade materials. Those balconies are going to have some awesome views.
Great shots, John and TLA!

It's interesting to see whether a new tower is "visible" or not as a new addition to the downtown skyline. Unfortunately, this one seems to suffer because of its particular position on DT's east side. I thought, when it got to 16 floors, it would be visible from some vantage points on the west side. Not yet, and it might not be ever, even at 27 floors. Too many tall buildings block the west-side view. And, from the vantage point on the east side looking west the building seems to be too "blended in" against the backdrop of the other tall towers. Maybe just my imagination. What do you think?
Posted 05 October 2022 - 08:55 AM
It is starting to show up from the Near Southside. I spent some time in the South Main Historic District over the weekend and you could see the building from there. However, you may be right regarding skyline views from a distance.
Posted 05 October 2022 - 11:11 AM
The best view of the building in the skyline might be either from the south or the north. When it gets closer to full height, I will try to go out and photograph the skyline from several vantage points. To all of the other photographers, I would highly encourage you to do the same and post on the forum. I can't be everywhere.

Deco 969 ... after dark
Posted 10 October 2022 - 07:43 AM
It's nice to see the project after dark. It gives it a totally different appearance.
Posted 10 October 2022 - 08:11 PM
TLA, I see the Corp of Cadets but did Reveille, the First Lady of Aggieland, grace you with her presence?
Posted 10 October 2022 - 09:39 PM
TLA, I don't think they are going to do that. The design drawings show on the Commerce St. facade, a light box centered over the entry on the parking garage levels. Then this light box picks back up on the 23rd floor and continues up to the top of the building. There is a similar piece of glass at the top of the building on the Calhoun St. facade, but it is not indicated as a light feature. No other exterior lighting is shown on the design drawings. The balconies will have lights, but those may be controlled by the tenants.
I was told 20 years ago that outlining the buildings was "dead".

Yeah I think the building from the West is going to be blocked by Burnett Plaza from most angles. From the east it is going to blend in but it will also fill in a gap. At 27 residential floors, It's not going to have a big effect of the skyline from a distance but will be more noticeable as you as closer.

I would imagine that the tower crane is going to jump in the next couple of weeks. I realize there's a distortion because of perspective from the ground, but the cables hanging from the trolley appear to be just above the concrete pump.
Posted 12 October 2022 - 11:16 AM
JBB, I agree with you. The crane will be jumped soon.

I'm now on the back side of the building, and they are still in the process of jumping the crane. The next section is on the platform, almost ready to be moved in place.
Posted 16 October 2022 - 06:33 PM
I apologize for taking all weekend to post the pictures of the building's construction while they were jumping the crane, but I have been busy this weekend working on Historic Fort Worth's Preservation Awards to be held on October 20th.
My first photo is the elevation view taken from General Worth Square. The construction now has all of the form work in place for the 16th floor, while some of the columns and core elements for Level 17 are in place.
deco969-10-15-22-1 by jtrobert, on Flickr
The second view is from a little further back to show the crane behind the building. This photo was taken down Commerce Street next to the Convention Center Arena.
deco969-10-15-22-2 by jtrobert, on Flickr
The third photo was taken from the Fort Worth Central Station. Again, I have included the crane in the photograph.
deco969-10-15-22-3 by jtrobert, on Flickr
Finally, my last shot is from E. 7th and Jones. This view shows the building and the added section of crane moving closer to the platform where it was put in place. I stayed for quite a while watching the work, but since I was at HFW since about 12:30 and it was getting close to 4:00 PM and I had not eaten lunch, I decided to go home and eat. I had observed tower cranes being jumped before, so I knew what would be occurring.

Here's the new height of the crane:
Posted 20 October 2022 - 08:32 AM
It the crane is at 320 feet, then it is currently sitting just above the top of the building when it will be completed. I had a meeting yesterday at lunch at HFW, and I could see the crane above the skyline coming in on I-30 from the west. At bridge over I-30 at Summit, you can see the building.
From another vantage point of the Hulen Street Bridge over the rail yards and the river, the crane is rising high above the Federal Building on the skyline.

Star-Telegram posted about the crane jump with some excellent, up-close drone footage: https://www.star-tel...e267630052.html
The article also mentions it's the tallest new building since the Omni, which I don't believe is correct since Frost Tower is 368 ft.
Posted 21 October 2022 - 09:48 PM
The paper is not correct, you are, Austin. After reading the article, I was wondering if the paper meant it was the tallest new residential building since the Omni.

Form down Jones St.

It is now starting to show up. I can see the construction from several new vantage points.

Here are two views from Saturday, October 22. The first is from 9th & Commerce.

The second photo is from General Worth Square. More glazing has been installed in the residential floors and the first screens going across the openings in the parking garage have been installed.

It's on floor 18 now right? With columns on 19? 22 is the last regular floor before the setback, with 23 holding the pool area.
Posted 05 November 2022 - 07:17 PM
I should have ground level photographs posted tomorrow. I was tied up today at the house with people doing some work for me.
Posted 06 November 2022 - 06:21 PM
It's really hard to tell from Austin's drone photos, but installation of brick has begun on the parking garage levels of the building. He has covered the levels of where the uppermost construction is located, so I will refrain from that. I have three shots today. The first is taken along Commerce Street from the south. The second is from General Worth Square showing the overall west elevation. The last photo was taken from Commerce & 9th Street showing the new brick.

Let's see em!

I got tied up last night with two phone calls. One was to my friend Kalleen and we talked for 30 minutes, and then a fellow cyclist from Sacramento called and wanted to know all about Fort Worth. We talked for an hour and a half with me telling him about cycling in the area and he also asked questions about the city. The reason for his call is that he is thinking about moving to Fort Worth. He did explore here a few months ago, but he had more questions. I'm not going to tell you his opinion of Sundance Square, but I think you can guess what an out-of-towner thinks about the place. Anyway, it was 9 PM before I even had a chance to eat, so by the time that I got on the computer, it was 10 and I still had to go to work this morning. Obviously, I didn't get a chance to get the pictures posted.

Finally, I was able to address the construction photos that I took on Saturday, November 12, 2022. The 19th floor is partially done and the rebar is in place for some of the 20th floor columns. More glazing has been installed and almost all of the parking garage screens have been placed. Brick laying is proceeding upward on the facades.

The building has the 20th floor partially formed up with some column rebar in place for the 21st floor. One important development in the construction is that stone is now starting to be installed around the building's entrance.

I wanted to be out photographing more and riding my bicycle, but with the rainy weather that we had over Thanksgiving, I had to go to the store and do yard work today. That didn't leave me much time for taking pictures.
Posted 28 November 2022 - 05:02 PM
I went out to grab lunch yesterday around 11:00 and thought, "wow, it's good picture taking weather." Today was just as good.

It is difficult not to get a lens flare in your night photographs. I always try not to aim the camera toward a bright light source. Doing that really helps. When I get a small flare, or a dim one, I will use Photoshop to remove it.
