On the one hand, I hate that I'm barred from walking or biking over this delightful footbridge. On the other hand, from a pedestrian and cyclist perspective it sorta is a bridge to no-where. I'm conflicted!
It was intended to have a bicycle/pedestrian lane but the neighborhood on Bellaire didn't want the bridge at all and removing that feature helped quiet the opposition. There were/are plans to connect Bellaire to the Bomber Spur rails-to-trails project using a trail north of the I-20 access road. You can see it on Page 73 of CONFLUENCE: The Trinity River Strategic Master Plan (pdf) (link found here). I wonder if the design of the existing bridge would allow addition of an "outrigger" on one side to support a bicycle/pedestrian bridge in the future? Alternately, a parallel bridge could be constructed (similar to the Mistletoe connection next to the Forest Park RR bridge).
