South Hi Mount Elementary School
4101 Birchman Ave. - 1936; 1949; 2003
This school and its landscaping was a Works Progress Administration
project and it was designed by Hubert Hammond Crane. The general
contractor was Quisle and Andrews. The building's design is a Moderne
interpretation of the Colonial Revival Style and it features a four-bay
colonnade with pedimented entries on each end. On the interior, the
auditorium sits between the entries. This colonnade forms the central
block of the school which is topped by a gable roof and a Colonial Revival
lantern. Two story classroom wings are on each side of the central
block. A small cafeteria addition was completed in 1949 to the west of
the main building. In 2003, a larger two story addition was added to
the southeast and a cafeteria expansion on the west. |
