In Topic: Butch Cassidy survived to old age?

18 August 2011 - 09:28 PM

Hi all,

Did any of you see the article about Butch Cassidy: Yahoo News Butch Cassidy article Seems like the rumors and stories about the famous old outlaw gang, (famously photographed dressed in their Sunday best in the 1890's Swartz Bros. Fort Worth studio) never goes away.

The _Fort Worth Star-Telegram_ published an article about it last Tuesday. What really made me laugh out loud, though, was the teaser that the paper printed on the front page: "Did famed outlaw survive shootout? A book collector says a manuscript is evidence that Butch Cassidy died in the U.S. in 1937. One historian calls the theory 'horse pucky.'"

To my surprise, I found a recently posted image of what the Wedgwood Country Club looked like during the planning stage:

This drawing is a little different from the way I remember the building and surrounding area appearing when it was Wedgwood Methodist Church, but it's close.

As I recall, the main building held the sanctuary and several activity rooms. If all you wanted to do was use the big swimming pool, you parked your car in the big parking lot and walked over to the other building, which contained locker rooms and the concession stand/ticket booth (tennis courts were behind this building).

Indeed Pancho's did open prior to 1970. It was 1968 and I worked there when it opened as a bus boy/dish washer while in high school. It was the the most popular thing around back in those days. Waiting for a place to sit was standard on the weeekend.

Geez! That means I'm the same age as Pancho's! :)
I do indeed remember having to wait in line with my family. Sometimes the wait could be half an hour or more. I think that was one reason why they had all those artsy pieces in those illuminated boxes mounted on the wall... to give folks something to look at while waiting.

I did ride by there this week and saw that there is virtually no trace of the apartments that were across from the bowling alley... just empty lots and I think they're trying to grow grass there now.

Something new is being built at the corner of Wonder and Woodway, across from that old water pumping station. This is very close to the Wedgwood Bowl site. The foundation is laid, but I couldn't see anything to indicate what the new structure will be.

Related to the loss of Wedgwood Bowl, I can state that Pancho's Mexican Buffet, which has been in that shopping center at the corner of Granbury Road and Loop 820 since the early 1970s (and probably earlier), is indeed going to be closing very soon. The outside signage has already been removed from the building. A representative of Vantage told me that they want to start drilling for natural gas on that property very soon... likely by July. And that means they'll be leveling those buildings in the shopping center pronto.

Fear not, however. I happened to have lunch at another Pancho's location in Arlington this afternoon, and the manager there told me that: a) She lives near the Pancho's in Wedgwood, B) the Wedgwood location is indeed closing, and c) it is MOVING DOWN THE STREET to a new location! It is moving into what was Chuy's Mexican Restaurant in the shopping center at the intersection of Granbury Road and S. Hulen St. (Next door to Goodwill.)

So "Raise the flag!"
"Praise the Lord and pass the sopapillas!" :)
