Ghost - Thank you for that very helpful information!  That old library was my 'Mecca' when I was a kid.  Also visited Barbours(sp) Book Store very often!!

A few years ago on a quick visit to downtown Fort Worth the old Barbours Book Store sign was still up, but I'm not sure when the site was being used for.  Looking in the window seemed like some sort of training facility!!

Ghost - in a previous reply you mentioned that you looked through old telephone directories at the central library.

Would the central library also hold copies of the Ft Worth/Tarrant city directories?

Where is the central library now located?

I haven't used the Fort Worth Public Library since 1960, at that time I recall the library was across from city hall and close to the Flat Iron building.  Last time I visited downtown Ft Worth (about three years ago) there was a parking lot in that location!

Have you had any dealings with the Fort Worth Independent School District, Billy Sills Center for Archives on 2720 Cullen?

Andy,

As a follow-up to my previous reply.  I just did a search of my grandmother on Ancestry.com.  One of the hits was from the 1940 Federal Census, she was listed as "wife" and not "head", as my grandfather was.

I don't believe the 1950 census will be made public until around 2022 - 2025.  I forgot if the delay is 75 or 72 years.

Andy,

My inspection of census records lead me to believe that such records are based on street addresses!

I was looking at the 1940 census records online for my grandparents.  I found them knowing their street address.  I believe Ancestry.com has the census records scanned to where they can 'search' the record by residents name. The census records provide much more information than a city directory.  But that information is dated and only taken every ten years!

Cheers!

Ghost,

Thank you for the additional information, much appreciated!  As indicated before, I used Ancestry.com and found their City Directories often incomplete (pages missing) or not covering all the years fro a certain county/city

I'm sure your experience with City Directories is much more extensive than mine.  What would be your thoughts on the source data for City Directories?  The reason I ask, I am trying to determine where I lived in Fort Worth between 1944 and 1949.  Searching the family name in the Fort Worth City Directories available Ancestry.com I had no hits,  However, I attributed this to the fact that we were "renters" in those years and probably the "owner" would be listed fort a particular address.

I know the general area (e.g. - around Brous school, around May Street Baptist church, etc.), but do not recall any street name or numbers.  During that time frame my mother did not drive, had no phone and I'm guessing didn't vote.  So I'm at a loss as to what records to be looking at!!

I welcome your input!
