I'm a little surprised, but it's highly likely he was going to face his strongest challenge yet from the more conservative faction of the House to retain the speakership for the 2019 session.

I think he is gearing up for a run at Governors office. He has been one of the sane guys who has helped keep things in a little bit of check and balance I think in Austin. I have always been pretty impressed with him and think he would do very well.

I think he'll get his clock cleaned.  Abbott has been fundraising for statewide elections for close to 2 decades and has a war chest of over $40 million.  Straus has some statewide recognition, but I don't think it's enough to spoil the incumbent's home court advantage with less than 6 months to go before the primary.  Assuming he runs as a Republican, of course.  And I also don't think you hold a press conference saying you're tired of the fight and follow it up a few weeks or months later with one saying you're ready to challenge the sitting governor.
