Here's a few pictures I had taken of the Tandy Center Subway just before the termination of service. It's amazing how much it's changed around there in less than three years!

Look up in the upper left corner and click on some red dots to see the Tandy Subway in action.. on the very last day of operation (31Aug02).

Howdy,

Some neat shots of the Subway. I hate to admit I had almost forgotten about it. I think it was a shame to get rid of such a neat piece of Fort Worth History. I remember riding in it when it was the Leonard's M&O Subway.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Lobster, Those are some great pics from the final subway run. I worked as a M&O Subway operator in 1973 and 74. In fact, that's where I met my wife. We had intended to go down and take one last ride in August of 2002, but something came up and it never happened.

Fort Worth Leonards/Tandy Center Subway

I ran across a New York City subway site that has an incredible number of photos of the Tandy subway cars. Quite a few of the shots are from the '70's back in the Leonards days, so there's lots of history there. Here's the link:

Great old pictures - especially for non-native Texans. You can see in the 1st and 3rd pics on that site shots of the City Center bldgs being constructed in the background skyline...

North Texas Historic Transportation, Inc. has decided at our last meeting
to dispose of Tandy Subway Car No. 5 (Ex DC/Capital Transit #1541 heavily
modified). The car was never accessioned and now a loss of storage space
necessitates its disposal. The car was in the paint shop when the Tandy
Subway shut down and is stripped of the interior, windows and exterior
paint. The trucks and much of the electrical equipment is intact. This is
a General Electric equipped car. All inquiries or offers are welcome. This
car will be scrapped if no interest is received.

At the same meeting, Tandy Subway Car No. 1 (ex Boston Elevated
Railway/Boston MTA # 3166 heavily modified, Westinghouse equipped) was
deaccessioned and is also available to interested parties. The car is
complete and was running shortly before the Tandy Subway was shuttered in
2003. No guarantees or warranties are offered for its fitness for
operation.

Tandy Subway Car No. 4 (Ex DC/Capital Transit #1506 heavily modified,
General Electric equipped) may also become available. This car is complete
and was running at the end of subway service, however no guarantees as to
fitness for operation.

NTHT has a substantial collection of parts which are also available.

NTHT is focusing our resources on the Northern Texas Traction equipment in
our possession and perhaps keeping 1 of the Tandy Cars (more than likely
the unmodified Leonard's Subway car No. 1 which is not being offered). All
other Tandy equipment will be disposed. Interested parties should inquire
as soon as possible.

I remember riding the TC subway as a child in the early 70's. Later, I often took the kids to the downtown library via the subway. We were lucky enough to take one of the last rides on it just before it was dismantled a few years ago.

Gordon Dickson with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has a story about the old subway tunnel in today's paper.  Below is a link to the article.

We still have all the Tandy stuff. I should have started an April Fool's thread about a plan to put them back in service but I had a long and busy day at work yesterday and didn't participate in the revelry.

That's sad.

Maybe an unrealized opportunity...
