I remember several times as a youngster going to this place on the south side of the river, it had to be within 5 miles below the possum kingdom dam. I think it was called roach's camp.

It must have been 1968-69, they had a 4x8 sheet of plywood that had "Roach's" spray painted on it, and "$2.00 per carload" also.

There wasnt much to it really, but there was an old house on the left as you drove in that was used as a store for people to buy ice, bait, beer, snacks & stuff.

There were no major improvements as I recall, just drive on down to the river and find a spot and park the car.

We stayed overnight a couple of times there. Its was great. It was hotter than heck in the summer and that river water was cold coming out of PK.

I would love to go back there and look around if it were possible.

But no one can remember exactly where it was. Which is completely exasperating to me.

I also tried to find it on google earth as well but to no avail.

Anyone here remember this place?

I believe you're thinking of Rochelle's Camp on the Brazos at HWY 4. I made many canoe trips back in the early 70's from hwy 16 to Rochelle's Camp. They're still there and still renting canoes and shuttling paddler's back and forth.

Thanks for your reply but no that wasnt it. I made a couple of trips from HGY 16 down to rochelles/dark valley at FM 4,and on down to US 180 (once) lol. in the early 1970's.

There wasnt much to this place Im thinking of, it probably ceased to exist long ago.

There was a place called Garland's in the fifties. It was just west of the bridge and the fish hatchery, below the dam. You crossed the bridge and in a short distance, you turned left on a dirt road. You soon came to a gate and a house on the left.

I went there many time as a kid with my family, fished and had a great time time. The last time I went, was in the early seventies, and remember the 2.00$ sign.
