I recently purchased an older home in East Austin that backs up to the new Mueller greenbelt. It's been fun and interesting to have a front row seat to watch the old airport in central Austin become the city's newest community. It's planned to be pedestrian and mass transit friendly. And while these early pics make it look a bit suburban, it's literally single digit minutes to UT, Hyde Park, and downtown. Mueller will have a couple of stops on the city's new commuter rail system and is building a concentration of retail and offices, in addition to new homes. And the residential areas, several of which are complete, are more dense (small yards, condos, and zero lot lines) and eco-friendly than traditional suburban tract areas. The best part is the greenbelt with its chain of small lakes, pools, playgrounds, and trails which snake throughout the whole development. And the architecture of the commercial and residential buildings has been interesting so far...

Mueller has been featured on NPR twice this week.

 

It's time someone brought this concept to Tarrant County.

Based on Google Maps, Mueller looks like a very nice pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. It's unfortunate that the red line doesn't reach it.
