The George W Shannon Wetlands Water Reuse Project about 110 files southeast of Fort Worth is seeing record numbers of migratory birds that commute along a major flyway threatened by development and resulting loss of (even temporary) habitat.
The facility was built as a natural water filter for water taken from the polluted Trinity River and diverted for raw municipal water, about 20% of the supply for the Tarrant Regional Water District. The cost savings over building a massive reservoir such as the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir that would swallow thousands of productive east Texas lands is staggering.
This is a model that desperately needs to be replicated in this and other urban areas:
