Read an article in yesterday's Austin American-Statesman about the growth of Greater Austin, Greater San Antonio and the areas in between and how the region could merge into the state's third megalopolis in the coming decades.  Sounds like leaders from both cities are looking to work together in planning for the future - especially when it comes to mobility along the I-35 corridor.

If you think there's a lot of friction when it comes to the discussion about what to call OUR region, just wait until the time comes for Austin-San Antonio to come up with it's own unified moniker.

San Antonio and Austin are seperate cities that deserve distinct identities, so I'm not happy to hear they want to "share" a metro area.

Fort Worth and Dallas are 30 miles apart. San Antonio and Austin are 80 miles apart. Because San Antonio and Austin are so much further apart, I don't see them ever having the same close relationship as Fort Worth and Dallas.

Well no... not now, anyway.

But if this state keeps growing and adding more people in the towns in between, it's a possibility. 10, 20, 50 years from now? Who knows? But it's still possible that San Marcos, New Braunfels, Buda, Kyle, Northcliff, and Hunter could create a (somewhat) continuous string of 50k - 100k cities.

"San Austino"

How do you pronounce this?  "San Austin-Oh", or "San Aus-TEEN-oh" ?

Well, I have been called "Aus-Teen-Oh" frequently in my life so we'll go with that.

Gonna agree with Peoplearestrange here, 80 miles is a loooong way apart, I dont see those cities ever having any identity issues, not more than anything in BosWash or something.

Austin-San Antonio "region"...San Austino is clever but don't people generally refer to this region as the "hill country?"

Historically speaking, I believe the regionalism concept began in the 1960s as an adjunct to the establishment of urban and regional planning COGs.  Statistically speaking, regionalism is a larger population data grouping that goes beyond the basic Census Bureau metropolitan statistical research area (MSA).  And, in the popular news media-driven culture, region nomenclature is a way of branding metropolitan areas to make them feel more prestigious.  Like the "Golden Triangle" (FW-Arlington-Dallas-Denton) popularized in the 1970s and the "North Texas Region" of the present era.  I guess the Metroplex designation isn't good enough for our area.

I wish we could add 50 more miles between us and Dallas.  :ninja:
