FWTA is planning to increase transit fares soon. Among the proposals at today's meeting:

$2.00 for a single bus ride with no free transfers (no more two hour passes),

$5.00 for a local day pass on all busses and rail within this county,

$12.00 for a regional day pass to Dallas or Denton.

Also, the downtown free zone would be eliminated, and Molly would require a fare.

----------------------------

Hopefully, they keep Molly free (it's been useful when I've travelled across downtown with a group) and don't elimilate two hour passes (it would cost twice as much to transfer, or as someone else pointed out, go to the store).

Thanks for reporting on this, people.

I'm with you on your thoughts. I'm not to sure charging for Molly would ever be worth it, and the passes are handy. Having to pay transfer costs does seem odd and just makes it more of a hassle.

It's always a bummer to see costs increase for anything, but maybe this will provide some extra cashflow for better service.

By comparison, here's a few other nearby system prices

Houston - Single Ride $1.25, $3.00 for day pass.

San Antonio - Single Ride $1.30, $.15 transfer charge. $2.75 for day pass.

OKC - Single Ride $1.75, $4.00 for day pass.

Austin - Single Ride $1.25, $2.50 for day pass
Dallas - 2 hours pass $2.50, $5.00 for day pass

El Paso - Single ride $1.50 (free transfer in two hour window), $3.50 for day pass

Dallas is planning to increase fares soon as well, and they're planning to eliminate 2-hour passes and day passes, replacing them with $3.00 AM or PM passes that are good for half a day.

Not sure what happens if you buy a pass at 11:59 AM...

In the words of one of my former bosses.  Everything goes up except salaries, there's nothing you can do about it.

Did you notice that he excluded salaries?  I guess he was expecting all of us to work for him for 8 hours and then go get a part time job for after hours.

I'm sure in city-speak that means streets.

Yeh probably. The followup statement,

She didn't get into super specifics -- but I believe street improvements and crosswalk improvements were mentioned.

S. Main cost $8.6 million to rebuild, and has been very successful so far. Even a small chunk of $260 million would go a long way towards getting a few new streets fixed up with better pedestrian/bike accessibility.

Would be nice if another chunk could go towards The T to help improve bus frequency on some routes.

The T is also looking into a Cultural District <-> Downtown circulator. Seems like it would be primarily a tourist shuttle, but I could see residents of either location using it (especially downtown residents using the grocery options along West 7th). There really is a lot of development and density along this line. The route would also be the first to run down 4th street adjacent to Sundance Plaza, significant because many of the best public plazas worldwide have direct transit connections. I would assume it will operate similar to the soon-to-be defunct route 15 which is the Saturday stockyards<->downtown shuttle. Route 15 costs $1.75 and runs every 30 minutes. I'd hope this new route would run with more frequency, at least every 15. Molly runs every 10 minutes and is free.

TPiFgHY.png

uHMIc6o.jpg

Alright some info on this. It is 75% funded and expected to launch in the fall. It will be called "The Dash" and run every 15 minutes. The T is purchasing new, all electric and "sleek" buses to run the route, which will be the first of thier kind with the T.  Buses will have WiFi. It will run 10 - 0 M-th and 10 - 2:30 am on Fri and Sat. The route will connect to the ITC and overlap Molly for a few blocks.

If the Dash is successful on W7th, plans call for a Southside connector next, followed by Stockyards/Panther Island, and finally Race Street as the final phase.

The west 7th and Crockett Row folks are hoping that people who go there on weekends use this service.  I have my doubts that under 30 crowd will use public transportation.  Additionally, the resulting hassles that the additional parking in Sundance Square that could occur by those only using the free parking would be problematic for those business in the downtown area for their patrons.

Ideally, suburbanites will take commuter rail into downtown, then transfer to this line.

All other proposed fare changes will be implemented next week.

The T proposes a few changes to bus schedules on West Side slated to start next March.

Rt 2 - every 15 mins till midnight 7 days a week

Rt 26 - every 30 mins till 11 pm 7 days a week

Rt 57 - Eliminated

Molly the Trolley - frequency decrease to every 20 mins

I'm excited to see such high frequency on RT 2 for extended hours, and the higher frequency on 26 should benefit the Las Vegas trail area.

No surprises with Molly, it's rather pointless now.

Route 26 looks like a confusing mess on a map. Any chance they plan on simplifying it?

How late into the evening will route 2 run with a frequency of 15 minutes? I'd be pleasantly shocked if route 2 were to run every 15 minutes late at night.

The elimination of route 57 means people near Montgomery and I-30 won't be within easy walking distance of a line. Como residents will have to transfer to go downtown.

I'm disappointed to see route 10 won't be extended further west. I guess funds are tight.

I think changing from The T is okay, but Trinity Metro might also be too generic, in that it could refer to anywhere along the Trinity River- Dallas, Arlington, whatever.  Tarrant Metro might have been better.  Then again, maybe it's an overture/precursor to a merger with DART, so the applicability to Dallas is by design.  But somehow I doubt that's in the cards.

Some more information: http://www.fwta.org/...ary-29-2018.pdf

The Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) will be renamed "Metro Center."

IMO, this is a positive change. Hopefully, this will reduce the amount of TRE passengers who ride to T&P station not realizing the ITC is more convenient in most cases.

There will be a media event and possibly TV ads. They're also planning Star-Telegram ads.

If I understand correctly, the name of the transportation service is being changed from "The T" to "Trinity Metro."  The name of the governing body, Fort Worth Transportation Authority, will remain the same.

There are two places I think a monorail would be feasible:

1- TEX Rail's North Side station to the Stockyards

2- TEX Rail's Beach Street station to the Mercantile area, if a developer were to build a large office building along 35.

Years ago, I envisioned a monorail connecting a redeveloped Gateway Park to downtown. Years later, I think such a line would be too expensive and serve too few riders.

Although I think a monorail between TEX Rail and the Stockyards would be feasible, I'd rather see a streetcar do the same thing, then continue down North Main into downtown.

I'm a bit confused as monorails are "fixed guideways" so I'm not sure they would be an alternative... "Fixed Guideway Alternative" makes it sound like Arlington's VIA where there are no defined routes and I'm not a particular fan of that. But the company presenting doesn't have any sort of that in their portfolio.

You may be misinterpreting the term "alternative" in this context. In transit talk, "alternative" can also mean "option."

Think of the statement as saying: "a fixed-guideway option."

Moon told a neighborhood forum Saturday he instead wants a countywide election on $1.2 billion for regional rail.

Also solidifies Volare's point about it being countywide...

Another possible monorail route:

3- TEX Rail's Medical District station to Medical City and Cooks / Harris hospitals. This line would be half a mile.

The other two lines would be about a mile in length.

I would love monorail over light rail. It is so very Logan's Run looking. By the way. The "Logan's Run" movie with our Water Gardens that is in the movie, will be shown tonight at midnight on TCM :smwink: . But I am being very guarded given our city history on transportation. If this were ever to see the light of day. I bet many Tarrant County cities would jump on board. Even dare I say Arlington ?

A monorail or APM wouldn't replace light rail.  The footprint and cost would limit it to pretty short distances that would supplement other transit.

As long as we're dreaming, it would be fun to connect the ITC to the Cultural District with a monorail or APM.  That would be getting into the 2.5-3 mile range that would probably be better suited for light rail or a streetcar.

Arlington, specifically the GM plant, was mentioned several times in the presentation but I struggled to figure out why.

The talked about industrial applications of monorail as well, such as connecting warehouses and manufacturing to airports and railports.

There's only two monorail operations in the USA outside of Disneyland Parks.

(1) Seattle which connects the northern edge of downtown Seattle to Seattle Center where the Space Needle stands

(2) Las Vegas which connects the casinos to its convention center.

In both cases, mainly tourists ride them.

I would suggest a monorail to the Stockyards would be out of place.

A monorail from downtown to the Cultural Center may make more sense, the only things lacking will be a Space Needle style tower tourist attraction or dozens of casinos. ;)

Just going out on a limb and saying that the three triangles represent "Trinity" which form an "M" in the negative space.

If that's the case, it's clever... but I think they should have gone with something more dynamic and relate-able to transit. This looks like a logo for a law firm or something.

There is a very handy monorail in Tokyo that carries about 300k people a day from Haneda Airport into Tokyo (extension to "downtown" Tokyo Station reportedly underway). 11 miles/11 stations with top speed of 50 mph. Of course, transit in Tokyo is beyond comparison with Fort Worth but monorail is definitely a viable transit mode.

Looks like some kind of hazardous materials symbol.

GM's manufacturing facility in Arlington ships the majority of it's cars by rail. You can see the railhead on googlemaps, which is not adjacent to facility itself and instead across 360. To load cars to trains they must be put on trucks and driven a very short distance. GM wants to build an autonomous peoplemover to avoid putting cars on trucks or miles on the odometer. Presumably, this is where Schwager Davis came in and also wanted to pitch their products to the FWTA while in town.

Arlington might also be looking at a peoplemover to connect UTA, a future HSR station, the Entertainment District, Centreport and DFW.

Gordon Dickson has a report in the Star-Telegram on the Monorail vision for Fort Worth.  I strongly support the implementation of modern transit systems whether Light Rail, Monorail, High-Speed Rail (or even, someday, the Hyperloop!).
