New Year's Eve

Dallas' Big D NYE is cancelled for the second year in a row, and CBS 11 is not covering Sundance Square this year.
New Orleans says they're hosting CNN and ABC for national coverage of the central time countdown. MSNBC and FOX News won't be doing anything for the central time zone.
Central time countdowns:
FOX 4: Miami (Pit Bull) - one hour delay
NBC 5: Chicago - LIVE
WFAA-8: New Orleans - LIVE
CBS 11: Not covering New Year's Eve this year.
-------
CNN: New Orleans - LIVE
WFAA (ABC) and NBC 5 will have New York City at 11:00.

I don't blame them. I can't imagine that the ratings and the advertising revenue makes the local broadcasts worth the production costs, especially without a big name sponsor. There's just too much competition.

No one's covering FW? Disappointing.

Yes it is disappointing. I should think that it is newsworthy.
I also wonder why DFWInc. is not willing to be a sponsor; it is, after all, a commercial success for lots of downtown businesses.

I've never heard as much gunfire as I did last night around midnight. Went on for around an hour. Easily distinguished from fireworks. FWPD had tweeted earlier in the day about the prohibition on discharging firearms. Obviously no capability to enforce these laws.

Many people with guns are insanely irresponsible.

We made it home just a few minutes after midnight (the get together we went to was a mile or so away) and this is the first time in years that we haven't heard an abundance of fireworks in our neighborhood. None, actually. Which is strange because we typically experience far more illegal fireworks on NYE than July 4th.

I did like CBS11 coverage last year in Sundance. But I hated that BigD NYE was shown over Dick Clark's in past years. But now I watch CNN NYE coverage the best. Poor Anderson Cooper lol.
Victory park is so darn boring and the layout is not something that is inviting especially on TV. Time Square coverage looks fun just to watch even from home. I hope maybe when the north end of the Convention Center is redone. Some sort of Iconic tower or spear to bookend that end of Main street. And maybe make a ball drop of our own every new year ? You can have several music venues up and down Main street like they have during the Arts festival.
I think people would love a Main Street NYE party. As ESPN said it best. They notice that there was people and activity on a normal weekday evening when they were looking for a coverage site for the Super Bowl.

Wasn't planning to attend the puny Sundance Square firework show, but that's still disappointing to hear.
My Aunt's neighborhood in Houston had a surprisingly impressive fireworks show on Christmas Eve. It lasted about 20 minutes.
Looks like I'm going to be at home for NYE again this year. Every year, I'm disappointed with myself for not going anywhere to celebrate.

NBC 5 will broadcast the Reunion Tower fireworks show in Dallas this evening.
FOX 4 will broadcast FOX programming. Commercials say Times Square, but I don't know if it will be on a one hour delay or nothing for central time.
WFAA will broadcast ABC programming. Times Square for eastern time, then New Orleans for central time.
CBS 11 will not broadcast a New Year's event again this year.

The TRE is only operating between Centreport Station and Dallas today. This bothered me last week, but it makes sense now.
EDIT: Someone on Reddit is saying SSQ waited just long enough to the point they couldn't cancel hotel reservations.
I've got a weird feeling that Sundance Square wasn't planning a celebration this year, or was planning to cancel a long time ago.

Here in The Atl, TV viewers had the choice of Time Square with Steve Harvey or Dick Clark's Time Square with Ryan Seacrest and others.... Atlanta has a Peach Drop party every year, but I don't think it was on TV.

For Dallas, I can only think of two reasons Victory Park has the big party and not the Fair Park Esplanade, money and ignorance: Victory Park owners probably get a chunk of cash out of the deal and Fair Park decision makers always seem to be on vacation.
Water Garden to Courthouse, Houston to Commerce street party. Could turn into the funnest NYE in the area!

Well I posted that a year ago today. But I still hold that opinion. A few weeks ago I read in the DBJ on how a plan is in the works to redo Victory Park in 2018 to bring shopping, foot traffic bla bla bla... I lost count how many times Victory Park has had a "redo" lol I heard rumors that Mark Cuban is planning to built his own Arena. Partly because he don't get along with Perot Jr. But that is for another topic .

As I said in the Sundance thread, I really cannot overstate the quantity of equipment that has been put in place for this event.
And installed and operated by very professional teams.
Were that not enough, talented musical performances.
(have trimmed this back a lot because I just don't want to give away what it is like -- but I want to say enough that, if you are a member of this forum and you are proud of our city, and you are on the fence, this is an rare opportunity to see something spectacular)

Just got a text from some friends from DALLAS who are at the Bass Hall listening to the FWSO perform Gershwin's greatest hits saying it is amazing. (Among my circle, we are big Gershwin fans. Randomly, I used to live for a while across the street from where he wrote Rhapsody in Blue when I lived in NYC.). I texted back that word on the Fort Worth Forum is that there will be a spectacular New Years Eve event in Sundance Square and they should stick around after the concert. Despite all the craziness in the world right now, for many in Fort Worth, Dallas, and Austin life is sweet. And I am thankful for all it has given me. Happy New Year and Happy New Decade to all of you!

I decided to avoid the crush of staying through to the actual big event, and I notice that I took way more video than I did stills -- and video captures things much better, but here are a few stills from the first 2 hours or so, and when nothing in particular was happening, because when something was happening, I was taking video. I was positioned well for the opening and I will work through a way to put that up for everyone.
On the main trusses in the plaza there were 240 of the motion head lights -- that does not include thought on and adjacent to the main stage, like this on the arc in this first image.

The Sundance Square production was insane. There's a rumor going around that it was the 2nd most expensive NYE event in the US behind only Times Square.

The spotlights were very impressive! Overall, the lead up to New Years was very fun, and I appreciated the drink and food booths. I also appreciated the world's nicest porta-potties (restroom trailers with running water!).
That said, a visual countdown would've been nice (perhaps I missed it somewhere). Near midnight, I heard a few people shout "seven," then more people shout "six" before realizing it was the countdown.
The fireworks display began right at the start of 2020. As soon as I really started enjoying the fireworks, it was over. It felt like it only lasted a minute, and I was left wanting more.
Overall, I'm glad I went. It was my first NYE at Sundance Square. Although I missed meeting up with Austin, I met up with another friend / former classmate.
EDIT: The big surprise was a shiny silver cowboy hat that went up a pole during the countdown.

Wow, the countdown was clearly visible on the Westbrook, yet I somehow missed it.
I guess I thought we were still a few minutes from midnight, and turned to look towards the stage / shiny cowboy hat when I heard "seven, six,..."

So... besides bars, are there any New Year's Eve celebrations happening here at all?
Unfortunately, the TRE and DART stop running right about midnight, and I don't want to drive to Downtown Dallas, so seeing the Reunion Tower firework show isn't an option.

I thought about getting a room at a comparatively quiet hotel in Fort Worth on New Year's Eve, but I may just spend the night in my office in southwest DT across from the Burnett Lofts apartment complex. The problem in my southwest Fort Worth neighborhood is that the fireworks guy (or gal) pops them days before and days after NYE.
Fort Worth has a noise ordinance but law enforcement to confiscate illegal fireworks and make arrests is a joke. I know I'm being unfair to the police in that it's difficult to crack down on the scoflaws. The firecracker popper can't be easily caught because he/she does it sporadically and stealthily. The fire department is not responsive, because it's primarily concerned about fireworks safety.
Ahem...Happy New Year!

The fireworks started in my area before Christmas Eve and they will continue nightly until a few days after New Year's.

Using fireworks in the city limits is illegal. It has nothing to do with the noise ordinance.

It's next to impossible for police to enforce fireworks violations. Even if they can find the person that did it, there's very little they can do unless they witness it.
The fire department is not responsive, because it's primarily concerned about fireworks safety.
The fire department is not responsible for enforcing fireworks violations.
I'm with you on your frustration about fireworks. My roof at my old house was damaged from illegal fireworks on NYE one year. My landscaper discovered it several months later when he was cleaning out my gutters. If there had been more wind or if it had sat on the shingles and smoldered for a few more minutes, the damage would have been pretty serious.

Just as an added note. I heard a report on KRLD that fireworks are in short supply this year. I'm guessing the supply-chain issues are a reason. This may further cut down on NYE fireworks shows, which have already been affected by the Covid omicron variant outbreak.
John, from your prior posts, I believe you live farther west from me in SW Fort Worth. I hear the firecrackers pop occasionally but can't determine from where it originates. I thought it was somewhere along Cedar Hill, but distance judging is tricky. Maybe it's originating around your neighborhood and the sound carries a distance.
