I drove by the site yesterday and it seems like they have picked up the pace because they are really moving on this. I also noticed that the North side stairs seem to be a lot closer to the sidewalk than I anticipated from the rendering. I'm guessing that some slight street re-alignment is going to be needed.

Well, the bathroom bill is dead for now.

Oh, did I miss something this past weekend?

Because all of last week, I heard nothing on 105.3 the Fan other than that corny commercial.

They never voted on it, and the special session has ended with no indication of another special session.

What Doohickie said. There's a chance Abbott calls another session, but I think it's slim. He loses more and more politically if he calls them back again and they don't meet his demands. Of course, it could always come back in the 2019 regular session, especially if Strauss loses a likely challenge and the speaker's chair passes to a more conservative house member.

I drove by yesterday afternoon along Montgomery and saw this project which is quite impressive. Never mind the issues related to the limited seating capacity.  Judging from the construction going on there the arena will be a large structure.  The last photo was taken in May (Post#570).  I think it's time for an updated construction photo!

The last time I was actually driving down Montgomery in July, I thought that I should start taking construction photographs soon.  I will try to get by there this week.  Pictures may be from my cell phone, if I don't have my camera with me.

I drove down Montgomery a few weeks ago and noticed that the lower seating bowl is starting to take shape. It is also visible from I-30 traveling west from downtown. The final height is 170 feet, so it's going to be pretty impressive from a lot of angles. I think it's unique for a facility of that type to have all of the seating areas above grade. Most sports facilities have you enter on a concourse with lower seating bowls below grade.

I was driving north on Jacksboro Hwy over the weekend. And I can see all those cranes looking off to the south west. Of course those cranes will not be going up and up like the Frost tower. But using the cranes as a sort of a outline. This building looks like it is really going to stand out. In much of the city.

I do have a question ? Does any one know how tall the current convention center arena is ?

There's definitely a lot more going on at the south end of the building than you can see from ground level.

In the Star-Telegram article(Post#612), Max Baker paraphrases the following from Gary Pille, a project spokesperson:

But Pille believes the new $540 million Dickies Arena — which is about 17 percent completed and expects its superstructure to top out in December — will have a similar culture-changing influence on Fort Worth’s urban landscape.

Was Pille referring to this December or next December?  What does it mean to "top out" an arena?  If topping out means putting a roof on the arena, it doesn't look like that's going to happen in just two months, judging from the aerial photo of the construction site (Post#614).

I believe he's referring to the underlying concrete support structure for the seating bowl and concourses below the roofline. That's a significant milestone, but still a long way from topping out the arena and closing it in.

Interesting that he directly states they are not actively pursing a minor league sports team for the arena as well.

I'm not saying having a minor league team would be a good or a bad thing, just find it interesting they're vocally saying "nope, not doing it right now."

I would imagine that basketball and hockey present issues because of season overlap with the Stock Show.  The last hockey team to call FW home was shown the door in lieu of a basketball team that drew minimal attendance to the point that they bailed out of the convention center to play in a high school gym.  The hockey team ended up at NYTEX in North Richland Hills.  (Not to veer too far off, but the hockey team playing there now drew a monster crowd last Friday night.  I was at an event down the street that let out at the same time and the traffic was a mess getting out.  Cars parked in surrounding lots and lining the surrounding streets.)

There may be chances for minor league teams going forward, but I don't blame them for focusing on getting the lead tenant (rodeo) settled in first and on pushing other events like what they already have scheduled.  It looks like the arena will be great for concerts and should provide some healthy competition for Verizon, Winstar, and Toyota Music Factory.

Even the CC ufo had an Arena Football team once.

I love the visual compliment this arena will make to Will Rogers, and it appears the walk-up experience will be similarly compelling.

Probably too soon for any sort of initiative punctuating the cultural district expansion with an art-chitectural mummer for the new complex; respecting and elevating the presence of Pioneer Tower will be critical.

I agree singular focus on the Stock Show & Rodeo is phase one in the long term tenant search. These events are popular, and ideally suited to the ubiquitous association of Fort Worth and Icons of the American West. It's entirely possible ancillary national events ancillary to the theme become year round and long term residents in Fort Worth.

I think the WNBA team would be an outstanding fit.

Professional sport teams will want to be treated better than what Fort Worth has treated professional sport teams in the past. They have all failed financially, or Fort Worth has successfully chased them away being unwilling to improve or repair the facilities as needed. That reputation isn't going to attract future teams wishing to move to Fort Worth.

A WNBA team would be better off leasing the old Will Rogers Arena than move into the new  Arena - imho. Best yet, move into the new Arena Arlington built for UTA. At least Arlington has proven the ability to support professional sport teams when asked - and not actively pursuing policies to chase them away.

Yep.

The WNBA ship sank for us when they announced it.

I'd go for getting the Brahmas back and NBA G-League... and actually MARKET those teams like the Cats when were still here. Nothing wrong with minor league.

I too question having WNBA ? I think it is the worst fit for the arena. I don't think WNBA will fill out a 14,000 seat arena on a regular basis year after year ?

Average WNBA attendance is 7,716. AHL hockey (2nd tier to NHL) is 5,823. Brahmas averaged 2,441.  No idea what the Legends get but it will be under 4,500 due to arena capacity.

The old Will Rogers Arena has a seating capacity near 5.700, more than enough to host most minor league professional sports. The new Dickies Arena will have a seating capacity near 14,000.

The new arena will have the same problems hosting minor league professional teams the old one had, a three weekend, two week, rodeo in late January and February, smack in the middle of the winter season. Fort Worth has always sided with the rodeo when it came to upgrading and repairing the arena, leaving most minor league team's management in anger. That's why all have left.

With the rodeo moving to the new arena, that leaves the old arena available all year for hosting minor league teams. Will Fort Worth make the renovations and improvements necessary to attract them back?

They will probably not make renovations, improvements, the restoration necessary to attract them back at Will Rogers.  There have been several people and groups wanting something done with the facility for years, and it still hasn't happened.

The Spurs never seem to have a problem with this every February and that's one of the top NBA organizations.

I'm sure minor league teams could work out the same thing.

No. It is expected to be completed in "late" 2019 . But in time for the 2020 FWSS.

Parked in the new garage for the Stock Show. The place is huge and the signs are kinda confusing but there were hundreds of spaces open still Sunday afternoon. Two huge mosaics line the outside of the elevator core which look really nice. The big issue I noticed - even with thin crowds the doors were too small for everyone to get through and there are only 3 elevators in the garage, which could be a pain after big events. The staircases are nice and big though.

Here's the arena from the garage
