Water Gardens to reopen this Sunday

I read through the contractor's report on what improvements were being done to the Gardens - the list was impressive. The new lighting should actually, you know, light the park instead of the treetops, and the new filtration systems were badly needed (apparently, the city removed all the filters from the pump systems years and years ago).

Did any of the safety improvements change anything aesthetically in the gardens??
I think the most noticeable change will be at the Active Pool (where the drownings occurred). There is now a low wall of matching style around the Active Pool, providing both seating and a barrier to prevent people just wading from the walking path onto the water-covered slopes. The steps to the bottom are still open, of course. There is now a gate there that will be closed after hours, as I understand it. The bottom of the Active Pool has been made shallower, but from what I understand this doesn't make it look noticeably different.

WG looks great once agian at nightime. Like the sleek FWWG letterings at the corners. Still need a cascade fountain for the kiddos to cool down at during the hot hot summer days. Just like Millenium Park in Chicago.

The Quiet Pool was clean! No more scum on the bottom! The water wall was back! It was lovely.
The Aerating Pool looked fantastic with the full assortment of sprayers restored.
Loved the new signage. A great addition.
Welcome back, Water Gardens!

History is but the record of the public and official acts of human beings. It is our object, therefore, to humanize our history and deal with people past and present; people who ate and possibly drank; people who were born, flourished and died; not grave tragedians, posing perpetually for their photographs. ~Bill Nye, History of the United States
For me there is no greater subject than history. How a man can study it and not be forced to become a philosopher, I cannot tell. ~George E. Wilson

My palms red light is blinking in splendor.
Good luck with renewal on Carousel!
I think I'll rent Logan's Run this weekend, watch it, & then visit the WG!
Always a fun movie.

That's cool JulieM; I remember when they were making it. My sis and I drove all the way over to TownEast Mall afterwards just to see it.

I went today to shoot a few pics and was horrified at all the children in the water. I don't care if the floor has been raised in the death pool - you should not be allowed in any of the water. People are idiots!!!!!!!!!!!
It's happening again? I thought that people would know better by now. Not only should they know better from the horrible accident, but I thought the Gardens were to be staffed during the day to prevent this sort of thing.
The last time I went to the Gardens before they closed, there were kids wandering around the slopes of the Active Pool and people washing their clothes in it. I thought it was shameful how bad the city let the Gardens get. I am disappointed that they seem to be willing to allow it to happen again.

Or better yet, a summernight symphony series. HINT ! HINT!
And when the city tells you that "staff" will be watching the place. You know better than to think that those "staffers" will be just riding around SoDo in their "staffers" trucks, and will most likely be HS age volunteers in the passenger side. Just waiting to pick up some trash.
KICK the BUMS OUTA there! PLEASE!

I thought the same thing on my first visit back at the Water Gardens... there were two children wading in the active pool.
They turned out to be foreign toursists; I tried to say something to them about the stay-out-of-the-water policy, but ran into a serious language barrier.
There definitely needs to be staff there. Or perhaps a lifeguard, if they aren't going to bother keeping folks out of the water. The quiet pool is pretty tempting for wading, too, I'd imagine.

You'd imagine? Try going there in the middle of the typical Texas 100 degree summer heat and the temptation will run circles around ya. lol
By the way, was the quiet pool EVER open for wading in at one time? I got to go to the gardens last week and on the north end of the pool, you can see steps going down into it as you would find in a regular pool.

I never noticed, but are there any MULTI-language signs at the WG? Perhaps that is what's needed.
Two words: "Piranha Gardens."
Even it's actually stocked with perch, I suspect that would do the trick.
Or some RF controlled mini-JAWS' wading about. That would attract people to the site to say the least.
Still say we need exactly what they did in Chicago at MP. It's Texas and like what was stated earlier, the temptations are there come summer time. Irregardless of what language you speak, CALIENTE is CALIENTE.
Will a Koi pond or turtle pool be in the works in the near future?
Bern, would you propose that as a Distr. 9 candidate?

To me, that huge expanse of concrete in the middle of the place (in front of "The Mountain") is just screaming for some lush, green grass.
I always thought that area was such wasted space and very uninviting. The new signage is great and the gardens and water looked cleaner. I didn't see any kids in the water when I briefly visited this weekend. Are the plans still there to open up the south end of the gardens onto Lancaster when (if) the street is completed?
