Cheap gas, great tacos, camels and exotic cattle... Yep, Fuel City is coming to town

The article fails to mention the exact location, but hints around that it is on 8.5 acres near downtown Fort Worth, and north of downtown... look for the opening next summer.

Even though it probably won't be in the Stockyards, this is just further adding to the Disneyfication of Fort Worth.

Hmm?

How so? (I'm not familiar with Fuel City)

It's really not Disneyfication.  I was being sarcastic.  Maybe, I should have used the "sarcastic font".  Fuel City is a Gas Station/Convenience Store/Car Wash located on South Riverfront Blvd. where it intersects with I-35E in Dallas.  They also have a herd of longhorn cattle and they used to have some exotic animals on the property beside the store.  It's a very popular place in Dallas, and it is located just outside of downtown.

Ah.

I just saw some of the photos... I could go either way on having one of those here.

Clever marketing scheme for a convenience grocery store.  Obviously keeping Longhorn cattle on the premises is going to restrict the Benders in their future site selections.

Texas Monthly once named Fuel City's tacos as the best in Texas.  I wouldn't go that far, but they are pretty good.  And cheap.

Like Bucees's, Fuel City may not be real glamorous and the cheese factor is off of the scale, but it will have a pretty nice sales tax windfall.

We give them a Rodeo Goat; and we get a Fuel City in return.  Does not seem like a fair trade. --- :glare:

You could look at it as we gave them Rodeo Goat and we're getting HG Sply. That's quite a bit more balanced.

Shannon Wynne of Dallas is the creator/owner of both restaurants.  He also is the one who created Bird Cafe on Sundance Square, the Flying Saucer(s), Lark on the Park (Klyde Warren Park Dallas), Flying Fish(es), Meddlesome Moth (Dallas Design District) and the new Mudhen in the Dallas Farmers Market.

Please allow me too clarify--Wynne owns both Rodeo Goats restaurants--not Rodeo Goat and Fuel City.  One could say he chose FW FIRST for the concept before opening a second location in the Dallas Design District along the new hike and bike Trinity Strand Trail.

Really wondering where 8 acres may be. There's a few lots around 7-14 acres on the end of Rock Island and the intersection of Samuels and Northside Dr.

for the volume to pay for a 10 million investment, it'll have to be right off i35

That was my assumption as well. I would assume that any of the below pictured properties meets the Northside and near downtown criteria and all are easily accessible to 35. I believe the one on the southwest quadrant of that intersection was a Shaumburg residential project at one point.

Fuel City is still planning a Fort Worth location, but one at 121 and Haltom Road in Haltom City will open first:

I drove by yesterday and saw that grading and even some concrete work was done. I am really looking forward to having another 24-hour food choice on the NNE side of town where I work besides QT (I enjoy the roller grill there from time to time) and Whataburger (blasphemy, I know, but I've never been a big fan).

Anyone have an estimated completion date for this place?

The article above said they wanted to start construction in February and open by September or October. I think construction actually started at the end of May, so just after the New Year sounds reasonable.

I should have started this thread in the "Surrounding Cities" sub-forum, but here it is: The writer of this S-T article should be reading the Fort Worth Forum...

Looks like they've finished the exterior of the structures, and are working on the interior finish out right now.  Sign out front says they're hiring now.

It's supposed to open in the coming week, but no specific day has been set. Driving by, it looks like all that is left is work on the car wash.

Of note, the story mentions that a Saginaw location is planned to open in 2017. It's starting to look like one inside the FW city limits is unlikely.

Oh, that's great news. The Saginaw location will be at the NW corner of Industrial and Blue Mound (FM 156). That will be perfect for me.

I ran into the Haltom store and picked up lunch earlier this week. The tacos and the elotes were great.

Ground was broken for the Saginaw location and they will offer Little Caesars Pizza and burgers along with tacos and fried pies.

http://www.star-tele...e152824054.html

Fuel City has become a regular dinner stop for me on days when I have to work late. The tacos aren't the best, but you would be hard pressed to find a better simple street taco at that price. I love the pastor tacos. I've stopped in for the breakfast tacos a couple of times and they're not quite as good. I've only tried sausage and potato and they were a little on the bland side.

Fuel City is convenient for it's variety, and I stop there as needed. But directly across the street in a Texaco convenience store is an authentico Mexican cocina with tacos and in particular breakfast burritos that blows the doors off Fuel City. Stopped one day and found two Fuel City employees, in Fuel City t-shirts, eating their lunch in Texaco. That clued me in . Authentico ? My guilty preasures include a taste for barbacoa and ( ok, everybody shudder in unison,) trippas- whitch they will cook to order in front of you ( extra crispy, por favor.) Homemade red and green sauce. Excellent frijoles as well. Very pleasant staff.

Without deviation from the norm progress is not possible. F. Zappa.
