My question is 7th Street that much of a different animal than say Sundance Square ? Or even the Stockyards ? As far as how the police deal with popular areas ?

I did some driving for Uber & Lyft for a little while and W. 7th is a totally different animal on the weekend. It is much busier than Sundance and the Stockyards combined and the clientele of the area is much younger. Most of the people who frequent the area are usually TCU & UTA students and include many fraternity and sorority members and they are wild. Very wild. I've never had as many extremely drunk and obnoxious passengers from other areas as I would when I picked up from W. 7th. During home games for football it's twice as bad especially when larger schools with a large following comes to town. (Last year the Arkansas, OU and Ok State weekends were extremely debaucherous).

I totally agree with you.  My own experience on Saturday nights at both the Stockyards and West Seventh areas leads me to conclude that the West Seventh night-time youth activity is more widespread and wilder than the Stockyards.  One reason I believe it's more difficult for police to patrol is that the West Seventh area is larger and has more night clubs than the Stockyards.  I would hardly think this is a problem for Sundance Square for two reasons.  SS is less dense in terms of night club locations (they are more interspersed among the office towers) and the police have help from the SS regulators (maybe a poor choice of acronyms here, if you guess my meaning).

Farrington will be put into use for W. 7th parking Friday to Sunday after 10pm.

This sounds like putting a band aid on a broken leg, but it's something.

Obviously I'd prefer people not drive (especially after drinking), but the empty lot is just sitting there, may as well use it. Seems like a good compromise.

I want to say $10 is kind of pricey for parking, but then again we went to the Stockyards Saturday night and paid exactly that to park in one of the Exchange Street lots.

It's a lot cheaper than being towed.   :swg:

It takes a lot of space to park a car, and that space is not free.

An urban area needs to be concerned with the convenience of its residents, and not have to bend over backwards for the people coming in to visit.

The article does not mention the fact that the Optimist Club for many years has used the parking lot to sell Christmas trees, beginning sometime after the Thanksgiving holiday and lasting about a week before Christmas.  I don't know if the sales will be at that location this year.

The Optimists use the small lot on the northwest corner of the stadium. Since the crosswalk is being installed at Currie, I would assume only the east side of the stadium is being used for parking.

Very excited about the food hall. I hope it ends up being something similar to St. Roch Market in New Orleans which is awesome.

As for the new Elan building I was intrigued about how it was going to interact with University or if it would completely turn it’s back to it, but it does look like it may have ground floor retail.

The Farmington Field parking is already up and running. At least it was this past weekend.

To me, the biggest detriment to visiting the area is parking.  Not that there isn't enough, but that there's a risk that your car will get towed.

Farrington Field parking is a start to help with the issue , but it is only open after 10pm and only on the weekends. A more permanent solution needs to be found. Also, if people get towed it’s because they don’t pay attention to the signs and/or take a chance when using the Crockett Row garages. If they are towed because they didn’t read the signs then that is their own fault. I have never been towed and I go there all the time.

As far as W 7th street design and connectivity I would like to see a median with trees and sculptured artwork placed down the length of the street from the River to University. I believe it will make W 7th more aesthetically pleasing because right now it just looks like a huge wide and intimidating street for pedestrians. I also think it will help slow down traffic and it will make it easier for pedestrians to cross 7th at the intersection because it would act act as a safe haven for people to wait and not get stuck in the middle lanes and being left exposed if the crossing signal was to change on their trek across.

I thought there were reports (possibly cited in this thread) of over-zealous towing companies towing people who were properly parked.

1) Make it really easy and comfortable to walk everywhere.  Priorities are between residences and street-level commercial.

a) Crosswalks at every intersection

b ) wide sidewalks (7 feet clear with some occasional exceptions)

c) street trees b/w sidewalk and curb

d) street lights (not sure the name but the type they installed in the Crockett Row and So7 projects

2) More, different types of hotels.  (especially interesting leisure traveler oriented hotels)

3) A lot more residential density.

4) More office density.

5) a public parking garage (at Farrington Field perhaps)  but also maybe in a future office building that could make some available on nights and weekends.

If there have been I haven’t heard about them. I think it was due to parking at Crockett Row garages and then patronizing a non-CR business. I could be wrong though

All of the issues I have heard of are as rrojas71 described.  The latest big change was that you must visit a Crockett Row business first and they are are watching.  If it looks like you are going somewhere else first, then the towing people get called right away.

The previous iteration was that as long as you stopped at a CR establishment at some point and had them validate then you were ok, and you got 2 hours from the time it was validated.

I don't even know exactly what "Crockett Row" means.  I know there was a rebranding but I don't know what's included and what's not.  Are there multiple retail groups?  (i.e., Crockett Row, W7th, etc.)

W7th became Crockett Row, right? Everything north of Crockett/south of 7th and everything south of Crockett/north of Morton between Foch and University with the exception of Steel City, Tortaco, Fred's, and that quarter block or so on the NW corner of Foch and Morton.

So... those 5 blocks?  If I park in Northeast Parking and walk over to Kona Grill, are they gonna tow me?

It's a rhetorical question; I realize that no one here is in a position of authority to answer that.  But that simple doubt is a negative when I think of going to W7th area.

Just my very uneducated guess, but I would say "no" since the garage and Kona are both part of Crockett Row.

I know this opinion won't be popular, but if they just went with straight paid parking in all of those garages and quit trying to tie it to certain businesses or to a validation, everyone would probably come out ahead.

Nobody is getting towed from W. 7th, period.  It was an issue before they put in the pay kiosks, as many of us remember being chased off by rent-a-cops when they realized we were going to Fred's, etc.  But I think it's now a pretty good system...park for free if you visit one of their vendors (and get your ticket validated), pay if not.  Everyone wins, nobody gets towed.

Yes! What if there were a TIF over the area that paid for the operation costs of building a garage?

There needs to be one in the back corner where the employees of the warehouses park. Something simple, 3 stories open 24/7.

Fort Worthains have definitely become accustomed to subsidized parking.

Probably because of the legacy of the subsidized parking in Downtown, people seem to expect that they can park in any open garage and not pay for it in other dense neighborhoods.  This neighborhoood tried to get a TIF years ago and it was not successful.

So, unfortunately, it seems the property owners simply have to defend their lots and garages against people parking in/on them and going to other places.  It doesn't seem very neighborly, but unfortunately it has gone beyond a few cars here and there, and is abusive to those property owners.

If you own a building and have paid

for the land and/or garage, and pay the property taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc for YOUR tenants, and then your neighbors did not pay to provide parking nearby, is it fair for most of your neighbors' customers use your garage or lot free of charge?  This is happening with the bars, in particular Varsity and the others on Morton and Bledsoe.

IMO, we all need to get in the habit of using Uber/Lyft/taxis when they go out in the evenings.  Its smart for a number of reasons (is cheaper than a DUI, we won't kill anyone driving drunk, eliminates our risk of getting towed...)  I prefer it b/c don't have to stress about the ABV of each of my beers and how many I've had per hour....

It was more of just an observation, I don't have first hand knowledge of cars being towed, or not. But a clear statement was made backed with dated material. More than likely there are cars that still get towed, hopefully it is less prevalent than it was.

I'm not going to go intentionally test getting towed.  :swg:

Cars are still getting towed if they don't go to Crockett Row business first.  There has been discussion about putting a dollar amount to the free parking as some people get ice cream for a few dollars and then go to the bars.  The discussion on how to monitor that is being worked out if it is even possible.

This FWBP article is about the grand opening of Ampersand, a coffee bar.  Is this business a Starbucks competitor or is it another sports bar with a coffee flavored beverage?  I believe it will make a difference as to whether it attracts morning customers versus evening customers.   The W7th area needs more morning shoppers.

Did you read the article you linked?

"Alcohol and caffeine lovers rejoice! Ampersand, a coffee shop by day, caffeine-fueled bar by night, will have its grand opening open in November at 3009 Bledsoe St. in the W. 7th district."

"Ampersand will open daily for coffee service at 7 a.m. and the bar will open Thursday through Saturday from 9 p.m.-2 a.m."

I think the answer to your question is "yes", but sports bar probably isn't the right description. A traditional sports bar has banks of TVs for watching events and they don't mention any of that in the description of the décor.

Fully understood, which is why they chose the name "Ampersand" (roughly meaning "and per se").  And I understand it evidently won't have the sports bar TV décor.  But I have to think there's a reason why Starbucks is not a sports bar for evening customers and there's a reason why sports bars are mostly without daytime customers.  So, good luck to Ampersand if it can play both sides of the candle and still be able to stay in business.  Maybe the W7th location is a good choice for this form of entertainment.

The word ampersand was derived from the time when the symbol was considered part of the alphabet.  It came after z, and when someone recited the alphabet, they'd say, "...x, y, z, and, per se and."

"And per se and" was shortened to ampersand. (Per se is a Latin phrase meaning "by itself" or "in itself".)

I think i heard that on A Way With Words.

Yes. Highly recommended. I stumbled on the radio show as I was scanning the Radio and that is what made me a fan of NPR

I haven’t seen much mention of this but it seems like the old auto structure on the corner of W. Lancaster and Currie is currently being renovated. I looked for details but I could not find any information.

Capital Bar and The Backyard to close

Mazur added that there is a good possibility that a new concept under a different ownership group could open in the Capital Bar's prime location soon, but declined to elaborate, saying everyone should keeps their eyes open because there's things in the works.

My totally unscientific guess is that it will turn into an expansion of the Magnolia Motor Lounge along the lines of Lola's Trailer Park.
