Yours is better than the old flag. Is that REALLY the current flag? Seems like there was a better flag back in the 70s or 80s.

I agree. New flag proposed is great.

I would like a bit less cow in my flag. (I would really like no cow.)
Nice job!

Did not realize how dated our current flag looked.

Yeah, that's really our current flag...... Dynamic, isn't it?

When I made the flag on top, I took elements from the old and current, as you can see. But instead of Blue/White/Green, I wanted to match the flag of Texas.

The 'W' with the star underneath came from several logos found around town. You can guess where the 18-49 came from...

I've never been a fan of the "cow" in "cowtown:" sounds too redneck/country IMO. I'd like to see this guy get more play in Fort Worth's image -- a panther seems to have a great deal more sizzle than a cow, even one asleep on Main Street. :)

Yeah, I like the Sleeping Panther imagery as well but the whole concept came from an early (post Civil War) visitor to Fort Worth who returned to Dallas reporting to their paper that he had seen a Panther asleep in the (abandoned looking) streets of Fort Worth. But B.B. Paddock, our enthusiastic and tireless city booster, (as well as city newspaper editor) took the jab from Dallas good-naturedly and championed our alleged sleeping Panther. Before long, local taverns had pet panthers on display to titillate the patrons; the elusive animals became just as much a symbol of Fort Worth as the millions of Longhorn cattle passing through did. Therefore, both are icons of the City but probably only one could be on a city flag. Tough choice.

I guess the real question is, should it be a longhorn or a panther as the symbol?

Why not both?

5 years after this (and because Austin brought it up about a week ago), I decided to make a flag with a little more emphasis on this and no emphasis on the UT inspired "Molly" head:

Outside of the year, I didn't want too much text. I actually got rid of it from the last time.

It feels stronger.

A city flag is meaningless; as is a state flag.

There is only one flag that I pledge allegiance too and that for which it stands for - The Stars and Stripes. It alone is the only flag that is important and deserved to be displayed either publicly or privately.

It is not that I feel blessed to have born in Fort Worth & Texas; but, when I see any other flag raised while omitting the U.S. Flag, I feel like a statement of disrespect is being made.  I have observed the state flag being displayed without the American Flag; and for me,  that is wrong. :)

A flag is an excellent way to establish a symbol for your city.

"....A symbol is an object that represents, stands for, or suggests an idea, visual image, belief, action, or material entity. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, or visual images and are used to convey ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for "STOP"......"

The Stars and Stripes represents freedom, liberty and an opportunity to pursue ones dreams to Americans and to the people of the world;  and the USF is recognized everywhere as that powerful symbol.

What is or what are the things that a city flag will represent if designed. Is it just a meaningless exercise?

IMO, The Stars and Stripes says it all; and in the forum of "flag-ism" - just the one perfect flag is enough.

Aw com'on renamerusk, many if not most cities of any size or stature have a flag, and no, the citizens are not required to pledge allegiance to or salute it. This thread is just an exercise in exploring alternative designs for a flag that already exists. I am pretty sure that wherever the city flag is officially flown the US and state flag fly also, and widely accepted protocol ("advisory rules", etiquette, not enforceable laws) for display is followed. If you see that is not the case you might call the offending office and courteously inform them that their practice does not conform with custom.

That said, I am very opposed to any sort of pledge to any piece of cloth, no matter what color or design. I am especially opposed to the ridiculous practice of having school children pledge allegiance to the Texas flag; just dumb. To paraphrase a veteran who was supporting the football player who chose to remain seated during the national anthem a couple of weeks ago; he says he fought for freedom, not for some song or piece of fabric.

Forumistas: keep up the good work, and carry on with developing ideas for improving all aspects of Fort Worth, even unimportant aspects like the city flag.

You're going to have to excuse me if this comes off as me being "short", but with the whole Kaepernick sitting thing being the hot button issue of the week and (quite frankly) my annoyance with the replies to it is tiresome. So your timing on this along with your reply is a little unnecessary.

Every major city has a flag. I was just offering different suggestions since we really don't have much of one.

No excuse or apology is necessary.

The current hot button issue surrounding Kaepernick aside; agree or disagree,  the protest that he is having is proper in as much as it is a protest against  what he believes is an injustice that is occurring in this country. The power of The U.S. Flag, as the universal symbol of justice, is where proper and peaceful protest can be demonstrated to garner the attention to ones cause; in this case a perceived injustice.

The matter of a city flag or other such flags, state, local or corporate, have a miniscule amount of symbolism, if any at all.

In summation, a city flag, at its best, is a harmless act of egotism, but one can not but wonder what is the cause or causes that such a flag would represent.

I like the "Cowtown" Flag--that IS our nickname, and is our identity. Don't care how many newbies to the area think it's passe'--the ONLY thing I don't care for is it looks too similar to that horrid school with the burnt orange mascot.

Um... For starters, "Panther City" is also a nickname for this city with about a century of history behind it. And cattle is not our ONLY identity, you know.

Even I'm beginning to re-think the original flag I posted is kinda lame. Not because it represents a "cowtown" but because it looks so much like several other commercial flags and the Dont Mess with Texas bumper sticker.

The American flag.

Every state/province and most cities have their own flags... it's really not an issue.

I just suggested a different flag because if we're going to have one, at least have one that isn't basically just a modified Texas Longhorns logo with some text on a white sheet. That's barely even a flag.

The question arises as to what qualities a City of Fort Worth Flag would symbolize?

The U.S. Flags symbolizes specific qualities and events:  The stripes symbolize the 13 original colonies (states) that became a union to become the United States.  The stars symbolize those 13 states and the addition of each state joined into the United States.  White signifies purity and innocence; Red signifies hardiness and valour, and Blue signifies vigilance.

If we are to have a flag, it should come with a meaning.   I think you can get more interest if you can get a consensus on what it will symbolize and why you think Fort Worth needs to do so in a flag.

Pretty sure I gave meaning to both flags I made.

The latest one has a couple elements that are self explanatory if you're a Fort Worthian.

My "Road to Damascus" comes about because I now see and remember that hotels love to display three flags (National, State and Municipal) above their entrance. With the opening soon of more hotels in Downtown, it is an imperative that there be a City Flag +Fort Worth.

I am now fully onboard with the idea of a City Flag.

Well thanks.

Obviously, a new flag is the last thing on this city's mind right now, but I was thinking of ways to get it out. I have put this in a tweet a long time ago, but maybe want to put something in to Fort Worth Locals

Jeriat,

What about this?  An art deco'y sans serif font.  (I used "ADAM.CG PRO")

Honestly, the goal is to NOT use text. I'm still debating on if having the year slapped on is a good thing, regardless of where I put it.

This YouTuber kinda put it into perspective (and yeah, most American city flags are terrible.)

First impression to me of this design is "Indian Blanket".

I was going to comment that it kinda has a New Mexican vibe to it

I agree, the most iconic city flags have no text.

Did you catch Milwaukee's old vs. new flag war / debate?  The old one designed in 1954 is all but the kitchen sink in symbolism.  The new one looks like a hachimaki or a logo for timeshare resort company.  I tend to look at things from more of a marketing standpoint but you guys are correct in that the vast majority of city flags don't use text (at least from my own quick google searches).  The marketing side of me likes to state the obvious but maybe there inlies the challenge of choosing the correct symbolism.

this interesting article I only had time to take a quick glance at but I caught this quote relevant to the topic:

https://www.jsonline...lag/4646492002/

OLD:

800px-Flag_of_Milwaukee%2C_Wisconsin.svg

“Sunrise” is simple, bold and memorable, which is really all you want or need in a civic symbol. Boiled down to its basics, a flag is nothing more (or less) than a pattern of shapes and colors rendered in two dimensions. It’s not the symbolism of the shapes or the artiness of the design that matter but the emotional response of the viewer. Does it have the power to inspire a sense of ownership?

NEW:

milwaukee-peoplesflag.jpg?cb=7dba8de81c6

The sun rising over Lake Michigan symbolizes a new day. The light blue bars in its reflection represent the city’s three rivers (Milwaukee, Menomonee, Kinnickinnic) and three founding towns (Juneau Town, Kilbourn Town, Walker's Point). Gold represents our brewing history and white represents peace.
