I liked this ST column piece by Mac Engel.  I, for one, am not stuck being a Dallas Cowboys fan.  In fact, I'm  a Houston Texans fan.  What's wrong with that?  After all, we're all Texans and Houston is the largest city in our state (and the fourth largest in the U.S.).  Who anointed the Dallas Cowboys as "America's team", anyway?  And, lo and behold, nothing, not even the Dallas Cowboys, is written in concrete.  Franchises do move away from cities.  Remember the Washington Senators, Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns...?.

"This is one of the many non-negotiable coming your way, including flushing the toilet every time, and not dating until 10 years after my tragic passing.....As long as you live here, you are a Cowboys fan. You don’t like it? There’s the door. ....You will not be picking “another team” to which you have no logical tie....There is no bandwagon jumping in this house". - Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Dear John “You are sooooooo wrong”.

I think that you have  missed the essence of the article.   This is the Cowboys Nation and the Rangers Republic and the other teams, well not so much.  Team affiliation and identity is a birth thing for the true fan.

When I was a transplant myself to another city (Austin), I still remained passionately loyal and true to Fort Worth, never ever considering thinking of myself as someone else other then a Fort Worthian.  If I were to now become  a transplant to another region, I would remain a proud citizens of the CN and RR; so I do understand the fervor of the transplants for their hometown team even after they have arrived here.

I find the article  uses the sports analogy in manner that sums up why most if not all of us are passionate members of the Fort Worth Forum.

Bandwagon-ing on to the “Team de jour” or the “City de jour” is not to be tolerated. :swg:

Keep Fort Worth folksy

My post was not meant to be an analysis of the Star-Telegram column piece, but to use it as a starting point to voice my opinion that just because you live in the DFW area doesn't mean you have to be a Cowboys fan.  Texas has two pro football teams, of course, and I happen to like the Houston Texans.

The Cowboys branding themselves as "America's team" is, in my opinion, the epitome of hubris.  Call it sarcasm if you wish, but I bet there are a whole lot of people, including Texans, who feel the same as I do.  I was born in Fort Worth and have lived here most of my life, so I feel deserving of a personal opinion in this particular matter.

Is someone actually suggesting that you have to root for the Cowboys if you're from this area? And, while they made the expression their own at some point, the original use of "America's team" came from NFL Film, not the team.

Not really a football fan, but it's too bad AT&T Stadium is closer to Fort Worth than Dallas. Because of that, it will be difficult for Fort Worth to ever attract a football team (thus get out of Dallas' shadow).

With the current alignment of teams, it is very unlikely that the NFL wil or wants to expand.  And I think that any team owner can veto relocation of another team.

Yes, I suppose the NFL is tribalistic in a modern sort of way.  But these comments are correct and no one realistically believes the NFL will allow a "Fort Worth Rounders" (my pet tag for a local sports team) to compete only 30 miles from the Cowboys.  Why not when the Raiders compete only 15 miles or so from the 49ers?

BUT the point should be made that, in this mass media age, a U.S. city appears to enjoy national notoriety and identity if it has a popular sports franchise.  Certainly population is the not the controlling factor here.  Consider Green Bay, one-third the size of Arlington, Texas, yet if you asked a New Yorker where the Packers play football they'd say Green Bay.  By the same token, if you ask a New Yorker where the Cats play, they'd probably say the musical is currently playing on Broadway.

So, we can attract other major sports franchise possibilities...baskeball, ice hockey, maybe soccer.  At least Fort Worth's got the Colonial as part of the PGA circuit and the TMS for national NASCAR racing.

More like a popular publicly sanctioned mafia.

Cities like Oakland, CA  and Green Bay, WI and who now have teams had those teams before the present day NFL Syndicate established each team's turf and permanently defined the markets they desired. The Raiders,Packers, Jets had to be included to make the syndicate's plan work.

The billions of dollar a city would need to pay just to get in the syndicate or some other professioal sports league could be better spent to establish a world class biotech or research insitute that would gain the national attention that you want.

We are nearly the size of San Francisco and twice the size of Oakland. I bet we could potentially have two teams play at AT&T stadium kind of like the Jets and Giants at MetLife. After all Texas is kind of known for football...

I didn't automatically become a Cowboys fan when I moved here in 1996, but my tendency to root for underdogs has turned me into a Cowboy's supporter, if not an actual fan.  However, can you imagine how insufferable Jerry could become if he actually won a Super bowl?

I think for the NFL to expand, you need to identify eight new markets.  Starting with Fort Worth, that is already covered by the Cowboys, there is LA and Toronto who would fit the NFL's market size. Two down and six to go.

The 3rd would have to be San Antonio wouldn't it, I mean they already have a stadium too just like LA and Toronto.

I did think of San Antonio; but because professional sport depends on other factors such as household incomes and corporate headquarter counts, it might be on the bubble as a market, however an Austin/San Antonio might get some attention.

But being real, the NFL will not split DFW into two markets.

Born in Harris Hospital. I was never ever a Dallas Cowboy fan . But supported other Texas teams . In college and pro sports. But I may warm up to the Cowboys. If they do a name change into something like "Texas Cowboys"

Somebody once told me (talking about British football but the same applies to American football) you're allowed to switch allegiances exactly one time in life, but not after reaching the age of 13.  Allowances can be made if an expansion team comes to the region you live in and your passion for the previous team has "lapsed".  Allowances can also be made for non-major sports like baseball in which case you can cheer for whatever team you happen to have tickets to see.  If you happen to be born in a region with a terrible team (like Detroit, Saint Louis, New Orleans, Dallas, etc) then you may choose another team outside your region to root for - but you can only do this once and then you're stuck.

This is a bit close to home for me - I am a lifelong Broncos fan and I'm concerned my son who was born here might start liking the Cowboys... scary stuff.  Maybe I'll get relocated before that happens...

No allowances whatsoever, with the exception of the preschool, kindergarten and grammar school cohorts who frequently choose team loyalty based upon colors, mascots or the likes.  When you come of age and understand your birth heritage, you are stuck with that team. Good times or bad times, be who you are, a Texan, a Fort Worthian, etc. and remember always - the worm turns!

Baseball is MAJOR!  GO RANGERS!

Is the "Rangers Republic" really a thing?  Coming from out of town, I didnt really see a fan base support this team (past May) until a few years ago.  The Rangers have a long way to go before they have a name that is not just a t-shirt money grab.

Ironically, you'll have lots of younger fans that know nothing about Cowboys success and only know the Rangers as a top run franchise.  How odd is that to anyone over 30 years old?  Jerry needs to wake up but since I am not a Cowboys fan I am enjoying his dormant years.

Yes there is an ardent Rangers Republic. Not one of the most highly celebrated, but followers in every MLB cities.

Totally agree there is much better use for the money. The value of name-recognition from a professional sports team is often overstated. There's a difference between having heard of a city and wanting to go there. Or move a business there. Everyone knows where Green Bay is. And Detroit. And Cleveland. And Buffalo. Would you pick any of those cities to invest in a new tech business over Fort Worth? Or Austin? Or Boulder? Or Raleigh?

There simply isn't a strong correlation between economic growth and the existence of professional sports franchises. Large markets tend to have teams. They have them because they're large markets; they're not large markets because they have teams.

It's off-topic, but it had to be said.

As for on-topic - there is no actual rule of law, of canon or of etiquette requiring fealty to the local sports barons.

So by now most of heard of the Raider's move to San Antonio rumor. Jerry Jones was not happy about this. When asked today in Oxnard. To me this is the next best thing to Fort Worth getting a team. I for one wholeheartedly enthusiastically support San Antonio getting a NFL team. At very least .Maybe this will push the Cowboy's to drop the Dallas name. And rename the team to the "Texas" Cowboy's .

The SA thing isn't really a serious proposal from what I've heard. Just a red herring to get Oakland to build a new stadium.

You may be right, Austin.  But you also should understand that time's change and teams DO relocate to other cities.  As I've noted previously, who would have thought the Colts would ever leave Baltimore or the Cardinals would ever leave St. Louis?  But they did. And so St. Louis said good-bye to the sacrosanct "St. Louis Cardinals" brand.  So anyone who thinks the "Dallas Cowboys" brand is somehow unique from all the rest...?

You have a point about the Colts and the Cardinals, but Austin is 100% right. This is posturing by Mark Davis. The Raiders are not moving to San Antonio.

Ha! I haven't been a professional football fan since the strike of 1987, with no games on the tube I found other things to do, and am still doing some of them! Fooey on spectator sports, I'd rather play than watch. I might change my position if I were a stockholder, but a fan? Not Me!
