6 words in a name is way too many.  Just call it Perot Field.

I'll just keep calling it  Alliance, in the same way I keep calling Choctaw Stadium "The Ballpark (in Arlington)"...

Alliance is a cool sounding name that works well to describe the surrounding area.

I'm not too fond of the idea of the name change, but perhaps it is some kind of strategic move to bring the Perot name more in the foreground on the developments in that area in order to draw more family investment throughout Forth Worth.

Our city has a long tradition of having those strong family name projects, and it might be good to expand that list of names.

Alliance announced the 2022 iteration of the air show.  Traditional static displays are back, but the aerial portion of the show has been whittled down the 90 minutes with only the Thunderbirds, the F-22 demo team, a skydiving team, and a Bell 505 fly by.  Instead of 2 days, it will be Saturday only.  This was obviously a huge compromise to keep operations at the airport intact and I would say strongly, "be happy you're getting this much."  If the Thunderbirds weren't already scheduled, I'm not sure it would have happened at all.  Alliance is not on the Blue Angels 2023 schedule, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end of the line.

Alliance might see some more 777 traffic.

https://www.aviacion...rs-with-aspire/

Mammoth Freighters has signed a multi-year contract with Aspire MRO to expand its passenger-to-freighter conversion capability. Under the agreement, Aspire will perform conversion, maintenance, and related work on the company’s 777-200LRMF and 777-300ERMF. Aspire’s facility covers about 840,000 square feet (78,000 square meters) at Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas.

They have had a former Delta plane at Alliance since June.  It was being used as a test bed for satellite based Wi-Fi and did some pattern work for a couple of weeks.

I got to go to Alliance for something work related and saw the plane you are thinking of as well. They have a lot of interesting planes at that place.

FAA Has published a list of the busiest cargo airports by 2021 Landed Weight (lbs.)

https://www.faa.gov/...-airports_0.pdf

Perot Field/Fort Worth Alliance is listed at #20 and had a 45.34% year-over-year increase over 2020, having handled 2,416,564,940 Ibs. in 2021 vs  1,662,707,397 Ibs. in 2020.

Although I see from that table that DFW is trending down while Alliance it significantly heading up, I was surprised to see that DFW moved 1.6x more landed weight in 2021 than Alliance.  2.7x more in 2020.

I expected that an airport purpose-built in the same market would have captured more of that freight traffic, and DFW would use their time slots for passengers.

Perhaps a lot of freight is moved in the baggage compartment of passenger flights.

Bingo. American Airlines carries a lot of cargo unrelated to the passengers riding above on the same flight. Alliance will never surpass DFW Airport for that reason alone.

In addition to their regional hub at Alliance, FedEx Express flies out of DFW Airport where UPS is located exclusively. Even the Amazon Air hub (in Haslet's city limits, not Fort Worth) can't bridge the difference in activity by AA and UPS.

However, an additional carrier/hub like DHL Express (who's already in the planning stages for additional hubs in the United States, including Texas: https://www.freightw...expansion-in-us) would help expand the size/scope of Alliance. Plenty of other locations DHL could end up, but I'd imagine Alliance would on their short list for the same reasons why FedEx and Amazon landed there.

What NThomas said.  The lack of passenger flying during the height of the pandemic played a not-insignificant part in the supply chain issues.  There was a huge loss of belly cargo capacity, especially international.

With everybody's bags stacked up taking as little space as possible, it wouldn't surprise me if luggage only took up about 1/2 of the cargo space under the passenger compartment.

Austin, so you beat them to the data by a week? Thats pretty impressive. Even more impressive is if they saw your post and wrote an article.

I'm betting they saw it somewhere else but maybe!

I'm curious what the near term ceiling of the airport is. Chicago Rockford is probably the closest comparable, it has both a UPS hub and a Amazon hub and both appear to be roughly the same size as Alliance's on G Maps. Chicago is a bit bigger of a metro but the Rockford airport is quite far away. The Rockford Airport does have a passenger terminal but it's only 4 gates.

I bet Alliance can break into the top 15 and add another million pounds to hit 3.5 million pounds pretty easy.

BTW- the Memphis FedEx hub is just insane to look at from satellite view.

Just a quick glance at what came and went from the airport today. In total, the airport had the following arrivals,

17 767s (11 FedEx, 5 Amazon, 1 Omni Air)

5 757s (All FedEx)

9 737s (8 Amazon, 1 Atlas Air)

6 A300 (All FedEx)

1 MD-11 (FedEx)

Plus a number of ATR, and Cessna Caravan's

I just flew home from there today. Photos do not do it justice. The hub is nearly as large as the rest of the airport. I count over 100 planes in the satellite view and there are probably empty spaces for another 50.

The Louisville UPS hub is similar.

Probably worthy of starting a separate topic, but the Blue Angels announced their 2024 schedule yesterday and it includes a weekend at JRB in April of that year (I believe the same week as the total solar eclipse).  Relevant to Alliance since it likely indicates the end of their airshow.

I dont recall the year, but I was over off of Cahoba Dr. when they were flying at JRB and it was stunning how low they flew over us.

I doubt this is the end of the Alliance airshow.  The JRB has had several airshows over the years.

Alliance is doing itself in with the huge increase in the cost of parking and the reduction in the amount of actual airshow flying.

Every airshow that occurs at a military base, as far as i know, has always been at the taxpayer expense.  I have never paid to go to a military airshow.

Another way to think about it, is it is a chance for the taxpayer to actually see some of what they are paying for.  Airplanes don't like to sit on the ground and pilots need hours.  If they weren't flying in the airshow, they would be flying somewhere else.  You are paying for it either way.  Might as well get a show out of it.

Airshows are also a huge recruiting tool for the military.  Seeing what an aircraft can do and walking through a large transport aircraft are great ways to get people interested in joining the military.

The business of the airport is putting the end to the air show.  Amazon helps keep the lights on and they can't operate on the ramp during an airshow.  That's what restricted the performance times down to less than 2 hours this year.  JRB hasn't had one since 2016 and the lack of a scheduled headliner for Alliance in 2023 points to the show winding down.

Agreed.  I was just trying to separate what's going on at Alliance to what is going on at the JRB.  I don't think that the JRB finally having an airshow again has anything to do with what is going on at Alliance.  Historically, IIRC, an airshow at the JRB did not mean there was no airshow at Alliance.

Alliance Airport's name has been modified. It is now officially Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport, in honor of H. Ross Perot, Sr.

Not a huge surprise given that none of the major demo teams had Alliance on their schedule.  The airport has essentially outgrown the show.  I'm glad that JRB is planning a show for 2024.
