Yesterday (May 14) I went out to Cumby for the Black Jack 100. It's the sole fund-raiser for the Volunteer Fire Department and it was the 15th annual ride. The weather was beautiful except the wind direction was wrong for the 50k finish. The route was well-marked and included some nice country roads, but a bit too much frontage road milage for my tastes. And while I'm not an avid birder, I did count the personal first of seeing a Painted Bunting. Sadly, it was dead on the side of the road, but that allowed for more detailed examination (he wasn't damaged).

The downside was that there were only 59 or so riders, which was a disappointment for the organizers. They put on an excellent ride with all the good support and a very nice t-shirt. I hope next year they attract more riders... I'm willing to go back!

Two upcoming rides that I'm thinking of attending are:

7th Annual Honey Tour in Burleson on May 28 (phone 817-295-6121 for info). I've never done this one but there is certainly some nice countryside in that area so the scenery should be good.

20th Tour d' Italia on June 18 (in Italy) website: http://www.lonestarcyclists.org/
The folks in Italy are well-known for putting on a good ride. They really knock themselves out to have great rest stops, and the t-shirts are always unique (and attractive).

Greg, I'm trying to work in some of the bike rides on our Forum Calendar. The Honey Tour in Burleson has been added.

I've now fallen behind on my posting of rides in the calendar. I will get to it soon.

Cowtown Classic
Tomorrow (Saturday Sept 24)
In CROWLEY!
OK, I was shocked at first. But there may be more cows in Crowley than in Fort Worth.

A new feature of this board is "Multiple Calendars". Recreational events now have their own separate calendar. In December, I put in a limited number of rides. I now have a few more to list, so I will try to have them up by the weekend.

Drstevens, I also think I have the feature turned on that allows members to post events. If you wish, you may post a recreational or community event in the proper calendar.

Aledo Ride for Heroes

Here is a local organized ride that provides one of the more challenging
courses we have in north Texas (besides the Goatneck and a few others).
It's a great ride to break in the new season. They have added a 75 mile
course this year and now offer 6 distances.

From the Ride for Heroes Web Site.
For 2007, It's Back to (the High) School!

If you were here for our 2006 ride, you know due to construction we
moved the start/finish to downtown Aledo. However, in 2007 The Ride
for Heroes will be back at Aledo High School and will use the brand new
Bearcat Stadium The stadium will be the center of activity for
registration and our post ride meal. Parking problems from previous
years will be eliminated with the addition of some 2000 new spaces.
Brand new concession areas for dispensing food will be utilized. All in
all it should make this great ride even more spectacular.

2007 Registration Forms Available
The 2007 ride registration forms are now available. Online registration
is also available through BikeReg.com.

New Year, New Maps!
We've got the new routes up for 2007. We've expanded our routes for
this year and the much requested 75 mile route is back! The routes for
2007 are 8, 32,40, 52, 64, and 75 miles. Get more route information
and download the maps from the "Routes" page.

Kyle, I listed the Aledo Ride For Heroes around Christmas, so it has been on our Recreational Events Calendar for quite a while.

This is one of the rides that I have attended regularly. I rode in the inaugural ride of this event. I'm not sure which route I will choose, but I will probably go for my most miles in one ride for the year so far.

The Ride for Heroes is now, or is working towards, being the best local ride we have.

John, I'm no coach but...
I don't know about a "training plan" where you start with the greatest mileage out of the gate!
Seriously, a great ride, well put together, hope to see you there.

Jim, I've done several rides already this year between 30 and 40 miles, so doing the 40 mile route should be a piece of cake. I'm hoping that I will be able to do a little training and ride the 52 miler. I know you were kidding a little bit, but I did slightly edit my previous post, because it wasn't very clear.

I also guess you haven't heard about one of my crazy "training plans". Back about 10 years ago, a group of us from the FWBA that regularly rode together decided about 10 days before the Cow Creek Classic in Waxahachie to do the 100 mile route. Back then, the 100 mile route was actually 105 miles. None of us had trained for a century and several in the group had never done one before. Since there were several beginners in the group, I told them that I would stay back with the slowest rider. By the time the ride started, I had about 20 FWBA members riding in this "no training" century. We all rode together for about 90 miles. Then one of the female beginners was starting to have trouble and she slowed down significantly. I stayed with her and encouraged her to finish. We all had a great time and a real feeling of accomplishment for getting such a large faction of the FWBA together to do something with very little training. We actually won an award at the Christmas Party for the "Best Century Without Training", or something like that. Later in the season, most of the 20 of us did it again at Wichita Falls, but added several more people (who were first time century riders) for a total near 30 all riding together. We were in much better shape then and we all tried to better our Waxahachie times. It was a hot day, so all of us did not score our all time fastest centuries.

Anyway, back to the Aledo ride. I do hope to see you there, as well.

For those of you who are interested, I rode 52 miles yesterday from West Forth Worth to Aledo, around Lake Weatherford and then back to Fort Worth. This was a Fort Worth Bicycling Association ride, but I was with a couple of friends and we agreed that we would stay with the slowest rider. Fortunately, I was not that person. In summation, it was a fairly easy ride, so I'm not even tired today. If I can do two more 50-60 mile rides over the next two weekends, I should be able to handle the 64 mile course at the Aledo Ride For Heroes without any problems.

Well, this last weekend, I took another major leap in my training for the Aledo Ride For Heroes. I participated in the Fort Worth Bicycling Association (FWBA) ride from Willow Park to Springtown and the route was a very hilly 60.8 miles. We had a strong head wind on the return route and had several major hills to climb. One of them had a 13% grade. I had the same average speed as the week before, but the distance was about 9 miles more. The ride on the 10th had 3,120 feet of climb and the ride on the 17th had 4,665 feet of climb.

The Aledo Ride for Heroes is, for many, the first organized ride of the year and it is a very challenging course.
The LMRA Bicycle Club usually has several members of different ability levels that participate in this ride. We
have one more weekend before the ride to hold a practice run through the hills of Parker County. Going to
need that practice run.

John, we usually line up near the front of the start. If you come to ride, look for us (that loud red white and
blue jersey). Would like to meet you.

Looking forward to this year's ride. Hope to see a big crowd.

I will look for you guys. A large group from the Fort Worth Bicycling Association will be riding, as well. We will all be in our red jerseys. I will definitely make it a point to meet you all before the start.

Aledo Ride for Heroes

This was my fourth year in a row to do this ride - the last three years
with the LMRA Bicycle Club. I love this ride. It turned out to be a beautiful
day with a great group of friends.

Every year the course has changed. This years course proved to be the
most challenging. I swear we did 75 miles uphill! (I'm still waiting for the
downhill stretch.) Nice open roads freshly cleaned from the 7+ inches of
rain the two days before.

The stops were better than I remember them being in the past (although
they have always been good). Love those peanut butter haystack things.
Very friendly, very helpful people at the stops.

This is one of the best, if not the best, rides in north Texas. A tough ride
early in the year, but a great ride to get you prepared for the riding
season ahead. Put it on your calendar for next year.

Kyle, I looked for LMRA at the start, but I didn't see any of you. I was up at the front of the line early. I decided to ride the 64 mile route, but afterwards was a little regretful that I didn't push a little harder and ride the 75 miler.

John, sorry we missed you. We had about about 14 or more members there in club jerseys. There were 8 of us lined up near the front. That may be where we missed you if you were at the very front. What event are you riding in next?

Our club has our Off-Friday ride this coming Friday. This week we will be riding with some Bell Helicopter folks leaving from the Aledo Library (on Hwy 1187 across from Sonic - north of railroad tracks). It's the same route that FWBA does - about 51 miles.

John,
We had riders on every route except the 64.
Had a dad and trailer in the 20 mile route.

What Kyle didn't mention was after the 75 mile route,
he had lunch at the school, then rode back around Lake Weatherford,
before riding back to Benbrook.
108 Miles for the Day!

Jim, you put in quite a few miles! I'm slowly working towards doing a century this year. As for my next pay ride, I don't know. We've got a couple of big new projects coming in soon, and I'm afraid all of my training will be curtailed very quickly. If I can't find the time, then I will just go back to riding when I can.

I rode Cruisin' de Hood from Granbury on Saturday. It turned out that the people that was driving down with canceled on me, so I went alone. I only saw two other FWBA people there and I lost them at the start. Anyway, I rode the 63 mile route plus the extra 4 miles to climb Comanche Peak alone. There weren't a great many cyclists attending, so I really didn't have a chance to find someone to ride with. I always have a better ride when riding with someone, but this actually turned out to be my easiest, fastest, and longest ride of the year. My bike computer also showed it to be the most hilly, slightly edging out the Ride for Heroes. I felt so good that I came home and rode another 15 miles, getting 82 for the day. I realize that's not 82 at one ride, but that is a step toward my first century in a few years.

Another good organized ride in our area is
The Tour d'Italia

Saturday, June 16, Italy Texas
http://www.lonestarc.../tour/tour.html

This course is mostly flat to low rolling hills. Last year very heavy rains and lightning
accompanied the riders just after the start and many turned back after about 10 miles
due to lightning. There will be several LMRA Bicycle Club members riding this year.
If you see us, come say hello.
