I remember the star very well. It was at some (I thought) kind of erection company at E. 4th near Covello.
The yellow star was actually strings of lights strung between two tall towers on their property and could be seen for miles.
Another item I wished I had gotten a picture of. Last time I looked on either Google aerial or the one on Bing, the structures and the strings of wires could still be seen, though it was daytime. I don't know if any of those structures are even there anymore?

QUOTE (John T Roberts @ Jul 23 2009, 07:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The water tower was southeast of the portion of the building that houses the black square with the Ranch Style Sign. The water tower was demolished sometime in the 1980's when the building was expanded to the southeast. The section with the sign was added in the 1960's.

Well, thanks for helping me to remember it. I was starting to wonder if I was imagining things.
If anyone happens across a photo showing the water tower, I'd like to see it again.
It was sort of a landmark back then.

OK. Thanks for the orientation. This town is a little skewed from a N-S orientation.

Wow! This is great. You guys really went out of your way on this one. Who would have thought... Ranger, Texas. Some 80 miles to the west and the highway wasn't that great either. I'm sure this is going to cause a mystery for the owner of that photo. She had assumed a lot of things and it's not turning out that way. She had decided that since the girl was dressed the same in the boat picture, that she had been downtown and then gone on the boat. Doesn't look that way. I'm guessing that was her 'going out' attire that was worn on many occasions.
But... I have to say I am somewhat disoriented. The post card made sense, but now I'm not clear if the postcard has us standing on Main looking east, with Austin as the crossroad? Or is the cross road Main? Looking at the Sanborn maps, I am lost, even though it says Paramount Hotel. Will someone just define which corner of what street the Paramount is on? Is it the SE corner of Main and Austin?

But really, great work guys. I don't know how long it took to find that postcard and the maps but I hope it was fun.
Just think... from a barely readable hotel sign and some good guesswork on the name, all this.

Thanks for all the detective work! If you want more of these, apparently this lady is going through a collection of around 400 negatives she uncovered in her great aunt and uncle's stuff. I have more buildings and possibly a Camp Bowie photo. It's just men marching in a field with no buildings or tents.

Dismuke, that's quite impressive detective work. It's like a needle in a haystack, but if you keep doing that you may find it.
In my opinion it has to be a fairly good sized river, something that is feeding into the Missouri or Mississippi perhaps. I don't think it's in Texas, that's fairly certain. I can't really think of any big rivers here??? Not near a population center like that.
Don't wear yourself out. I appreciate you looking, but only if you're having fun with it!

Thanks!

John
