DT: 9th Street Construction project

I took this first shot last week walking home from Saint Patrick's. (Had my gear for a church project) I could crop out all the construction mess but it would not be accurate. I took the second shot walking home in the dark. The dark street behind St. Patrick's Cathedral is my favorite view in town.

Do you know if St. Patrick's is planning to build the bell towers as part of the new project?
I moved out of Fort Worth, and it's painful for me to read this forum all the time and not be able to just get up and go check out the things I read about.

No bell towers, not sure what happened, but they have started building a parish hall on the little triangle of land across the street.

If the streetcar project goes through and is routed down 9th, you'll be ecstatic when they start cutting into the freshly cured concrete to install the rails.
Sure enough. Anything near downtown would be torn up for years.

Part of some really much needed street work. That intersection of 9th and Throckmorton in front of the Municipal Courts Building was confusing even to people that live in the city.
Shot off of my balcony this evening.

All the plantings in this park are brown. (Remember the ice one week ago?) But it didn't keep me from taking these night shots from the roof of a parking garage last night. (And a few from the 3rd floor and on the ground.)

Too bad all the on street parking was sacrificed for wider sidewalks.
Where does one park now?

In one of the hundreds of garage or surface lot spaces within a 5 minute walk? DT Fort Worth has no shortage of parking. How many street spaces were lost to the park? A dozen or two at worst.
Great pics, Brian.

Yeah, there's a brand new garage right behind the AT&T building.

I noticed there seems to be a bit of work going on in the park west of Throckmorton. Looks like maybe just some sort of renovation, since several of the existing park structures like the fountain are still in place and have been worked around. If the picture does'nt make it to clear, most of the concrete squares have been dug up.
My completely out there guess, it's being renovated an prepared for the installation of the Tabachin Ribbon. I'm thinking this because of the description on FW Public art's site "Projects in Progress" page says "Installation of a sculpture donated by Yvonne Domenge on the Municipal Plaza in downtown Fort Worth" Alternatively, I've heard musing of wanting to bring Calder's "Eagle" back to FW, and this could potentially be a location for it. I'd love for it to be either as I love me some public sculptures.

My completely out there guess, based upon what I think to be a perfectly logical location, it is being prepared for the eventual site of a post office annex for when the post office at Lancaster is closed.

I may be completely off-base here but wasn't Hyde Park deeded to the city with the stipulation that it be used solely as a public park, or something to that effect? It seems that building a postal center there would nullify that agreement...

According to Dangr.Dave
Okay...here is what our building management said is going on: replacement of exposed aggregate paving with brushed concrete, replacement of irrigation infrastructure, and the addition of benches. The fountain, black brick pavers and green areas will remain. Mid-March completion.

This appears to be a parcel of land that is located on the west side of Throckmorton; is this section included in Hyde Park?

I wonder how many birds have gotten tetanus in that fountain, thus getting 'lock-beak'?

RD, the portion of the park that had a library had the stipulation that it had to be used for a library.
I had always thought that the entire open "rectangle" of land was a part of the initial Hyde Park, but I could be wrong. The western portion once had the city's main fire station on it.

I have an off topic question, how did General Worth Square come to be? It's just around the corner from this.

NBC had a short bit on the ribbon on tonights broadcast. It's arrived in Texas and should be put in place during September.

They have cut out a large square of pavement in front of the A.D. Marshall Public Safety and Courts Building. Looks like there is a concrete circle in the ground now and some more work will need to be done to fill in the cut out area. I'm thinking this is the sitework for the Tabachin Ribbon placement. Has anyone else seen this?

As of this morning, there is a ring of lights in the ground around the concrete circle.

Quick comment so as not to misdirect the topic:
I hope this parcel of land in the Hyde Park area of downtown will be set aside for future site of adowntown post office once the Lancaster P.O. is decommissioned. I think that a P.O. station like the one near Museum Place could be sandwiched on the parcel with a connection to the federal building.
Now back to the topic at hand.

I like that idea, but who knows if the post Office would ever have enough money to make that a reality. Fewer people use the post office nowadays and it is probably content with the existing one in the federal building, even though you have to go through security to get to it.

They aren't selling the one on Lancaster. That will continue to be the post office serving most of the customers in the downtown area. They plan to remodel the second floor to house postal inspectors. This will put more of the building into use.

As much as I like and support the postal service, on the face of it, I do not understand this decision. The USPS lost $2B during the second quarter of 2014. Why not expand the facilities at Meacham to office the inspectors or even lease space, if its available in the Langham Federal Building downtown? Wonder how many inspectors does the Fort Worth District have?
Should the expense of remodeling gets too high, they will have to revisit this decision.

I was walking around downtown and was greatly surprised not only that the ribbon was here already, but was only partially installed.

I'll be walking in that direction this afternoon and will check this out. Great colorful and imaginative addition to downtown. Hope we get more of this kind of artwork! (p.s.: why is this in the transportation thread?)

My thoughts too. I guess it was considered at the time yet another one of the FWTA's attempt at making 9th Street a transit corridor - BTW, the result speaks for itself.
I think Hyde Park could and can stand alone on its potential as an appealing downtown space.

It was put in the Transportation forum because the 9th Street realignment and the bus hub that was to be placed there were transit oriented. That never materialized and I could easily move it over to Public and Institutional, since it is a park space.

Since the ITC is on the east side of downtown and there is soooooooooooooooo much open concrete used for nothing but parking, the city may as well make that the transportation hub.
After all, with the ITC and the fact that this part of downtown is closer to the interstate exists, it seems like it would make more sense anyway.

The ITC was always intended as a transportation hub. The 9th Street area was supposed to serve the buses and the streetcar, if I remember correctly.

I love the ribbon. But seeing this . I just can't help but think of the "Eagle" And I wish it was back here in Fort Worth .And I think it would look wonderful somewhere close by the ribbon. Plus the Eagle was part of my childhood. Running around it.
