Speaking of masa, hope the Luna's building in Dallas gets saved. That neon lady grinding masa is a major childhood memory.

Here's some great places:
Best salsa: El Asadero, hands down, not even close. Very spicy but has tremendous flavor - just like Granny used to make it.
Best asada tacos: Taqueria San Luis - plate of 4 is a full meal, plus the little cup of beans you get is really good.
Best breakfast: Beto's - talk about a hole in the wall, this is it. Best place to get menudo in town too.
Best enchiladas: Several places are solid - Pulido's, Los Vaqueros, Mi Cocina, La Familia, El Fenix all do them well.
For a really good weekend time/event - hard to beat Los Vaqueros. I love the new rustic, warehouse buildng they moved into, the food is really good, and they have these 3 guys who walk around and sing at your tables. They have been doing if for like 20 years - really fun time.
Places I will not eat: On the Border, Joe T's, Tia's - they are not not good at all.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I ate at Joe T's twice shortly after I moved to DFW a little over ten years ago. The second time was worst than the first. I've never been back and will never go back. Simply horrible!!
My favorite place for mexican food in Fort Worth (and second in all of DFW next to Tejano's in Oak Cliff) is Benito's on Magnolia...the best beef enchilladas on the planet!!! Also love Los Vaqueros.
As far as chain joints go: I will shamefully admit, I will ocassionally put on my ballcap, dark sunglasses, and fake mustache, and dine at On the Border.

Completely agree. Joe T's is terrible, terrible food. The atmosphere is great.
My favorite Mexican is Uncle Julio's. They have completely ruined me from being able to get Fajitas anywhere else.

I think it's fair to say this is somewhat of an exaggeration. It's not the best Mexican food in town by any stretch of the imagination, but there is much, much worse food to be had. If it was as bad as described here, it would be out of business. And judging by the lines, it's not likely to go out of business any time soon.
And breakfast is actually pretty good. Full menu. I like the Migas. Not disgusting at all.

I've lived here for 40 years and have eaten at every possible Mexican restaurant there is, especially in the Northside. Not an exaggeration. I do not know of many locals who go their to eat. They will be around forever - but not not getting my money.

Not a vote for "best", but I am a fan of El Mil Tacos on Hemphill.

I dined with a friend at Uncle Julio's last Saturday evening. Great food! I didn't know this restaurant was based in Dallas, but now learn it's been sold to a Connecticut firm. Story in FWBP.

I thought Id chime in on this one because being an American of Mexican decent and growing up on both traditional dishes as well as cultural American dishes like meatloaf, hamburgers, pizza and chain restaurants. With that background I think I have a good grasp on the differences between what Native Mexicans like, what Mexican Americans who grew up mainly on an American Diet like, and also what many Non-Hispanics think of when they want Mexican food.
As you mentioned JohnFWD...Uncle Julios is definitely a good place to eat and especially for it being a chain. I think it mixes good flavors for any Mexican food enthusiasts but is palatable and satisfying to people who want it a bit more Americanized. To me it is the epitome of solid Tex Mex food.
For someone like myself who grew up eating menudo, birria and other traditional dishes I find that Dos Molinas on 25th & Clinton in the Stockyards is my go to joint when I want a more authentic cuisine that is slightly Americanized. Every time I have taken someone to it who did not grow up on traditional Mexican food but wants the familiarity of Tex Mex has loved the place. Many of them are still repeat customers and it is also my Anglo partners favorite restaurant in all of Fort Worth... based on quality and price. Their homemade flour tortillas rock and I have never had a meal there that I did not enjoy.
You know it is a good Mexican restaurant when 95% of its customers are either Mexican Americans, like myself and the owners, or Native Mexicans.

Yes, I believe that it is a good choice to follow the pack especially when it comes to ethnic foods. I I do that with Greek foods also and for home cooking; its got to be soul food.

I'll have to try Dos Molinas sometime. For a good balance of authentic and Tex Mex, I like Las Fuentes at Seminary and McCart.

My wife and I recently found a gem near I-30 and Camp Bowie -- it's more broadly Latino than strictly Mexican, I think, as its name implies. I had the tropical ceviche and it was amazing.

Latin food versus Mexican or Tex Mex seems to be a trend that's catching on. Gloria's comes to mind as kind of a trend setter with this type of cuisine (I'm not a fan, but I know it's popular). There's a relatively new restaurant in Colleyville called Tio Carlos that's a spinoff of an Irving restaurant by the same name. They have a huge menu that features Tex Mex and a wide variety of more Latin focused items. We really like it, but I don't know how they're surviving. Dinner and Sunday lunch usually has a pretty thin crowd.

I've seen that place and wondered if it was any good. Thanks for the info.

There is a such an embarrassingly amount of excellent "South of the Border" styled restaurants in Fort Worth that it is nearly impossible to judge which is the best. We should just enjoy the abundance of foods - chicken fried, BBQ, homecooking and Latin foods at our convenience.

They have fantastic fajitas. They have completely ruined me from ordering fajitas anywhere else. Any time I do, I quickly regret it. I wish only that their beer selections were better.
