Does anybody have some recent pictures of what was standing where the bass hall and barns and noble stand today. I worked in downtown throughout the nineties and remember them building these new buildings but dont remember what was there before.
thanks

Jason

Those properties were cleared away in the late 1970's and early 1980's when City Center was under construction. All of those buildings were nondescript warehouse and automobile related structures. That is probably why most people don't remember the buildings that were there.

There were three buildings where the current Wells Fargo Building is located. They were demolished in the early 1980's a little bit after the structures were taken down on Commerce. On the corner of 4th and Main was a little cast iron Victorian building that had been significantly altered by removing the cornice and covering the brick with stucco. Next door to that was the Commercial Hotel, constructed in 1922. It was 4 stories. Between the Commercial Hotel and the Shamrock Building was in infill structure that once had a cafeteria. It was later home to the infamous night club, The Cellar.

You're welcome. Probably somewhere in my archives of slides I do have photographs of that block. I did find one of Jack White's pictures that has a fairly good view of the building where The Cellar was located in its latter days. It also shows the edge of the Commercial Hotel. This photo has already been posted in another thread.

I have been noticing they are working on the exterior of Bass Performance Hall. Could be a case of "getting your work done while there are plenty of available contractors available..."
