I've been driving to work downtown from Wedgwood for about 20 years now and I'm really loving the CTP. I set the cruise at 50mph after I pass I-20 and shut it off when I take the Cherry St exit. The traffic is light and the road is really smooth. And I'm filling up my tank less often. Now, if they could just get the entrance from downtown constructed, I could avoid 7 minutes of bumper-to-bumper on my way home, too.

Finally! And good news for motorists tired of the construction-caused traffic backups on 30.

It might be a while before things really clear up on 30. Due to the ongoing construction of the access roads and the main lanes, things will still be tight going through downtown.
It's nice that they are going to add stickers to the road to let people know which lanes they need to be in, but based on the behavior of drivers, I bet there will still be a ton of people that wait 'til the last minute to move over.
What they really need to do is fix the timing of the lights. Going north on University, especially, you will have a green light to go under Rosedale, but the light to go under the CTP is red. To add to the frustration, since you can't see the CTP light until you get under Rosedale, everybody is sitting there staring at a green light wondering why no one is moving.

I agree with you. University Drive in that area is a mess, and not being able to see the traffic lights until you are a few yards away is not good.

And, say what you will about Spanish investors backing the 820/183 rebuild, but at least that project had some expediency about it. It started construction after work started on the area near the CTP/I-30 interchange and it will have wrapped up about 6 months before the dust settles on CTP.

I hope that the current I-30 traffic pattern on the southwest side of downtown is temporary owing to the not-yet-finished Chisholm Trail Parkway at this location. I say this, because the Macon Street-originated entrance ramp to west-bound I-30 has caused a very dangerous traffic merger situation. This is my personally harrowing experience: Yesterday afternoon I was trying to merge but decided to slow down and yield to fast oncoming westbound traffic on the interstate. Mistake! The merger lane at this spot is quite narrow and, if you're not cautious, you could get struck from behind by a semi-tractor trailer at worst, or a Volkswagen beetle at best. I was stuck for what seemed an eternity waiting for an opening and quickly running out of merger lane. Finally I saw an opening and slammed hard on the accelerator. West-bound motorists on I-30 are travelling helter-skelter at this location and some don't seem to care about the difficulties of merging traffic. Motorists beware!

Supposedly, this condition is temporary. However, I had a similar situation to yours that scared me to death, so now I drive on surface streets until after the construction area, and then I enter the freeway. It may delay me in time, but it is worth it to avoid an accident.

It sounds as though the speed limits in this area need to be reviewed and possibly moved down to prevent accidents. Might be a good place for targeted speed limit enforcement. I wonder if any TXDOT administrators or FWPD officials read this forum?

Is that the merge just prior to the University exit?
No, the "Macon Street" entrance ramp merges on I-30 further to the east. But I think I know what you're getting at. Just prior to the University/Montgomery exits there's a similar merger lane which, in this case, I guess it's from motorists getting off the CTP and merging west-bound into I-30 at that location? Yes, that's another trouble spot.
And, don't get me riled about that east-bound I-30 from the frontage road entrance ramp after you turn right at Montgomery Street...you know, the one where you either get on I-30 quickly or take the exit-only onto Rosedale. Whew!

I thought all the construction was to be finalized by end of May. It appears a long way off even with the rain delays.

What galls me about the entire boondoggle is that construction on the segment between Montgomery and the interchange with I-30 started years before any other part of the tollway and it's going to be the last part finished. It's coming up on 5 and a half years at this point.

A little info at the bottom about work wrapping up on the I-30 interchange by the end of the month but median work going on into July...

OMG, the gauntlet of traffic lights southbound on University from I-30 to the Jack In The Box area is terribly timed! Traffic routinely backs up on the I-30 westbound exit for University, and traffic backs up on University in front of the Botanic Gardens. Is the "construction" done" What about traffic light management? Anyone know?
It's a real deterrent to go from my place to the UPV area (just like I avoid City View and S. Hulen at all costs).

The intersection of University and the CTP westbound service road is odd to the say the least and has some screwy visibility issues. That being said, I drive south on University from westbound 30 during morning rush and the opposite in the evening and I don't know that it's really any worse than it was before the road project. Northbound University in the evening can back up some, but it has usually been related to the ongoing road work. I would suspect that southbound University from 30 is going to improve some once people figure out the free exit from westbound CTP. I hope it stays a secret as long as possible.

Really need to mark the area with signs or road decals for the correct lanes. I know people loath overhead signage, but this might the place to have it in front of the RR crossing going NB on University.

Yes, there are some REALLY screwy signs there. Good luck finding the eastbound I-30 turn unless you know where you are going!

CTP won't be complete in my mind until they have the ramps built from EB 183 to SB CTP (and vice versa) so that I can actually transition from one to the other on my commute without going through any traffic lights. The biggest interchange on the toll road and they didn't finish it.

"and Fort Worth residents who live near the 28-mile toll road agree to it."
That's the key- gotta get this crammed thru before all those million dollar homes are built down by the river.

I think that's more in reference to the residents of Mistletoe that pushed for the lower speed limits. I'm sure they weren't the only ones, but they were pretty vocal.
Definitely them too, but the development in the river valley is already having fits that FWISD says any kids there will be going to Como, not Tanglewood. haha

After studying the issue, the NTTA will be raising the speed limits on the parkway starting in September. Speeds will remain at 50 mph between downtown and University Drive, increase from 50 to 60 between University and Arborlawn, and to 65 between Arborlawn and Altamesa. After Altamesa, the speed already increases to 70 mph. and it will remain between there and U.S. 67 in Cleburne.

No, keeping the speed limit that low was the only way the planners could get the road built without the neighborhoods inside the loop standing in the way. I can't imagine they'll trap many speeders in that half mile stretch.
Oh I can. If you're not from this area and you come off the 30 doing 65 and just don't slow down? Boom. Gotcha.

Any idea on when this when the we EB and WB connectors between 183, 30 and CTP will be completed? It was a total miss not doing this all at once.

From what I remember, the direct connectors were not going to be built at all until federal economic stimulus money was put into the project. The original plan was for the tollway to be built without them and the direct connectors would be built if money became available either through the federal government or the NTTA. I would assume that the ramps that they couldn't afford will be completed when the money comes together.

The version I remember is that those connectors were going to be added when the traffic levels supported it.
If they were there, lots of Lockheed employees would use the tollway. As it is, on the way to work you have to exit the tollway at Overton Ridge and go through four traffic lights to get to 183, and on the homeward leg you have to exit Bryant Irvin and go through three traffic lights and a Stop sign to get to the tollway. Take those impediments away and they'd get their desired traffic volume.

I heard NTTA's Media Relations Manager, Michael Rey, interviewed about this on KRLD the other day. (Remember him from his days at WFAA KFAD-TV)
He cited a big drop in use / drop in revenue due to work-from-home changes as well as a huge $9.5B debt bill mentioned in the above article.

All I want are the rest of the ramps on the CTP/I-20 interchange so I could come from downtown and head east on I-20 without getting off on access roads.
According to the last transportation plan from the Council of Governments, 2036 is the target for the new direct connectors.
