They are making progress on the project and today putting up another crane for the next phase. The NICU wing is almost closed in and patient tower behind it is still making progress.

Notice how Thistle Hill is being surrounded by this hospital.  If a parking garage is built on the lot immediately to the west of the house, there will be absolutely no visibility of it until you are directly in front of it on Pennsylvania.

The building does appear to be topped out.  Austin posted the size in an earlier thread.  The building is seven stories, but I think the top floor is all mechanical, since the building is listed at six stories tall.

two small commercial buildings on Rosedale East of 7th were recently demolished. Not sure what the plans for the site are but assuming Cooks will do something there. Demolition permits have also been filed for the two houses on Southland.

I believe so. Cook's plans on using that block as a temporary surface parking lot.

This may have been addressed elsewhere, but what happened to the original Cook Hospital building on the north side of the old freeway?  I have been out of Ft. Worth for almost 30 years with visits few and far between.

HealthSouth is updating that building as we speak.  My father was there for a little bit before he died July 4th.

Cooks is going to build a garage on the site of the buildings recently torn down at 8th and Terrell. I do not know how many spaces or floors it will have bit do know it will be 80 feet tall.

Update - it will be 7 floors and 626 parking spaces. Interestingly, and positively, it will include ground floor retail space as well.

Of course Cook Children's isn't in the business of advertising that they are a really profitable hospital system, because that might undermine all their fundraising goodwill for one thing.  But these are good questions the article is getting at.  And personally, the last place I'd ever be donating money is to a non-profit that is throwing off 9 figures a year in profit...seems like they're doing just fine.  Cook now has a considerably larger endowment than TCU, which most people would never know (again, it wouldn't be good advertising for Cook to be touting that).

Aside that Schnurman once lived and worked him, he should know better styling as a Fort Worth a suburb.  He styles everything as a "Dallas" thing, perhaps because the DMN is his boss.  

 

I find his open and repeated deconstruction of Fort Worth to be insulting; and no longer read any of his opinions in good consciences.

From the beginning, in his or the editor's publishing of the news story headline.

 

#1 - The styling of the story.

 

# 2 - hospitals are in "Dallas Metro".

 

 Instead of referring to Fort Worth as a suburb, he clearly is suggesting that the Cook's Hospital is in the Dallas Metro.  The term "metro" is and always suggests the location of something other than being within the central city.  I am aware of Cook's Hospitals facilities being concentrated in Tarrant, Denton and Collins County;and only can locate one facility in Dallas County.

Asfor Schnurman, I became convinced that he now has the ease of being dismissive about Fort Worth;and nothing demonstrates his attitude more thoroughly as when he opined that a blame for Amazon not selecting Dallas for HQ2 could be placed upon Fort Worth.  He is deep into Dallas and will cut at Fort Worth without provocation; and unabashed hit man oozing hubris.

 

If you intend upon writing about Cook's Hospital, I think you should be intellectually honest by including Fort Worth in your headline.   Why wouldn't you?

I think it would surprise people to find out that many non-profits make a very healthy profit that is reinvested back in the mission of the organization. I work for one.

I think the big question, and I'm not giving an opinion here, is whether building up a massive endowment war chest is really reinvesting "back in the mission of the organization."  Cook has been wildly profitable (by hospital standards) for quite a long time.  They could choose to provide the same services for less money, or to increase the pro bono work, or charitable efforts, etc.  But they choose to dump profits into the endowment.  Maybe this really is the ultimate mission...to keep growing.  But it's an interesting question.

I agree with much that has been said here about Cook Children's expansion, but isn't all this just about a 7-story parking garage?

While looking for the permit for the Harris expansion crane, I did find one for the 8th and Terrell garage.

Bud Kennedy noted that Kindred Hospital on 8th Ave. is closing.  I would think this is prime for purchase by Cook Children's.  They already own the other lots on the block and this would further whittle down the number of properties not under their umbrella in the 8th-Pennsylvania-7th-Rosedale blocks.

I noticed that.  I wasn't certain that the particular owner was actually associated with the hospital.  It's down to a half dozen or so small properties, Ronald McDonald, Thistle Hill, and the garage and building that front Rosedale (which I could have sworn were owned by Cook).

I thought I would drive up Henderson from Rosedale a few days ago just to check out the status of construction in the medical district.  The projects over which the two tall cranes loom are proceeding apace, in spite of the coronavirus-caused slowdown in the economy and, particularly, the construction industry.  I hope one of your photogs can get over there sometime to post a progress shot.

Thanks for letting me know that there is actual preliminary site work taking place.  I'm sure most of you know that I don't get out much since the pandemic.

From an aerial view, it looks like the building in the bottom right of that rendering is all that's missing and the building to the east of that has a slightly different design.

The building in the bottom right of the rendering has not been built, and will most likely be constructed along Terrell Ave., since the South Tower is in a different configuration and was built along Terrell.  Basically in that area, you are correct in the new building placement and configuration.  Their next phases of construction are to build a 900 space parking garage on the west side of Thistle Hill (where the large version of the text box is located in the previous post), and a westward expansion of the Dodson Specialty Clinics (bottom of rendering).  This expansion should take the building all the way to 8th Ave.
