#72559 Forum Meet

Posted by Ron Payne on 02 October 2012 - 12:54 PM

If it's before November 30, I can help with any T&P tours or info - I currently reside there. In fact the Owner's lounge is available for use by residents (had my son's wedding in there last Saturday) - just need to reserve it in advance. The Tavern is just outside the back door to the room, so food would be convenient in an indoor and maybe more comfortable environment. I believe the limit is 50 people though...

I thought I'd create a place to post the inevitable photos I will take at the upcoming Cowtown Cruise for a Cure - this Saturday, September 15 from 10 to 3 in Sundance Square. No admission charge for spectators, $35 for the hot rodders to register.

#71780 "Fort Worth": Going, going...gone?

Posted by Ron Payne on 17 August 2012 - 10:24 AM

Playing Devil's Advocate, you have to admit that 'Fort Worth' and 'Tarrant County' have nearly become one and the same with the city's penchant for annexation - I would guess from the map that well over 50% of the county pays FW city taxes.

That said, even as a transplanted resident of downtown FW, I hate being associated with Big D by people who don't know better! I work at a plant in Saginaw whose corporate offices are in Vancouver, WA. For several years, the plant was referred to as the 'Dallas plant' before we finally got them to call us 'Saginaw'!

To add insult to injury (and to further illustrate your point), my sister-in-law and brother-in-law drove out from California to visit a couple months ago and called on the way in saying they are on 114 headed for Dallas. We asked why they are headed for Dallas, and they replied, "Isn't that where you live?"...

Inspired/reminded/prompted by Bruce's soon-to-be-legendary parking garage photo, I've assembled a series of pictures which are not necessarily meant to be of anything in particular - just interesting shapes and lines.

#69514 Flight Time!

Posted by Ron Payne on 12 April 2012 - 11:57 AM

My apologies in advance for the following blatant advertisement for a certain Dallas-based airline for whom my son works, and from whom we, as parents, get unlimited free (albeit standby) flights! These are various shots from our many journeys made possible by the hard work of our son!

#69131 It's all in the details

Posted by Ron Payne on 20 March 2012 - 09:19 AM

One of the things I enjoy about the buildings around town are the little details - easily overlooked, but lasting evidence of the long-ago craftsmanship some of the buildings were constructed with. Several examples!

Kind of creepy

From the top of the P.O. columns, I've posted one of these before, but found one without the brass stains

The original Fort Worth fire bell - purchased in 1882 for the volunteer FD, used by the regular FD starting in 1893, and retired in 1912 when the automatic system was installed

I did some snooping around the T&P warehouse yesterday, and came away with a whole mess of pictures!

Brick and tile work still looking good after 80+ years!

Haunted? Maybe not, but certainly creepy!

Was there a brick road behind this building, or was this just part of the parking lot?

#68095 Cruising in your Muscle Car in the 1960's

Posted by Ron Payne on 12 January 2012 - 03:06 PM

This was my baby from 1996 until we moved to Texas in 2005. She's a '65 El Camino with a 426hp 350 bored to 357 (.040 over), camel hump fuelie heads, 1.94/1.50 valves, 288°/298° cam, Pete Jackson straight-cut gear drive, 600cfm Edelbrock, etc., etc. In addition to transportation problems, I didn't think it would be practical to drive on these awful Texas roads, given that the header collectors sat 2" off the pavement! We got down to the wire and had to sell it to my wife's cousin for $6k!!

#67983 Local neon

Posted by Ron Payne on 04 January 2012 - 12:54 PM

I managed to put about 8 miles on my shoes last weekend wandering around town with the camera. Among the things I was looking for were the old neon signs (and some not so old), so here are a few of the shots I took:

#67855 Guitars

Posted by Ron Payne on 29 December 2011 - 09:10 AM

A visit from the UPS man yesterday prompted me to share some photos of my growing guitar collection. Even if you're not a musician, the woodwork on some of these instruments is quite stunning!

First, yesterday's delivery - an Ibanez EW20AS with figured ash front, back and sides, mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard - exquisite!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Next up, my Dean acoustic electric in African Bubinga wood, again with a mahogany neck

Posted Image

This is the 5-piece mahogany headstock of my Ovation Model 1124, sporting an ebony fingerboard on the other side

Posted Image

Next is the spruce body of my Charvel 625C, with rosewood back and sides and rosewood extended fingerboard

Posted Image

One of my favorites - this is the back of my 1964 Goya classical - flamed maple with a mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard

Posted Image

Last, but certainly not least, this homely little guy is my 1961 Gibson C1E, with maple top, mahogany back and sides and rosewood fingerboard. It may not look as good as some of the others, but the sound is the sweetest of all!

#66824 Colors of the zoo

My wife and I made a mid-week trip to the FW Zoo last Wednesday. Out of the approximately 250 photos I took (minus about 40 deleted for blurriness - ugh!), these won out for most colorful!

#66680 Reflections

My little sister lives down in Austin, and loves to take pictures of reflections, and some of it has rubbed off on me. Here are a couple to start with:
