Did Taco Bells serve beer? Maybe even in pitchers? And did not check carefully for i.d. when High School kids came in? I have an unobvious memory of a location across from the TCU theater and of one near the Wedgewood Theater. This is in the mid 70's. I think it was Taco Bell, but it could have been Taco-Something-Else.

Massey's on 8th Ave...The best Greasy Spoon in Ft Worth... Fantastic breakfast and their Chicken Fried Steak dinner was awesome. Terry and I went there many times beginning in the 60's.
I believe it is still there after all these years.

Speaking of Seminary, does anyone have any old pics of Seminary South (the outdoors mall)? I've looked online and can't find any.
Thanks!

From a three year old post by suerta:

A little cafe on Jacksboro Highway just west of the river, made the BEST Apple Pie using cream to help cook the apples.

That would be Summers Cafe. They're still there!

On another note:

Anyone ever had a Chili Cheeseburger at The Candlelite on Vickery or Camp Bowie?

If so, I may have made it for ya!

I'm really looking for more around the 70's-80's pics. I spent a lot of time there, would just like some visual reminder of the place.

The three links that I posted were from the 1960's and the photos that I took were from the 2000's. I started my photography work when I was on the yearbook staff at Paschal in 75-76. One of our photography assignments was to go to Seminary South and take shots in the mall. If I can find those negatives or prints, they would be from the summer of 1975. Those would be the only photos that I took during that time frame. Hopefully, some of the others on the forum might have some old shots.

The best fajitas where back in the 80's at the Cleburne Location Jose's Mexican Restaurant. The other locations for some reason weren't near as good and I do mean not near as good. I remember the stacks and stacks of mesquite wood they would have piled up along the wall. The fajitas came out with a great red hue, from the mesquite and would smell of total mesquite and sweetness, when put in front of you. Just the smell alone was euphoric. My family could not get enough of them. We would try many Mexican Restaurants around the North Texas area. Nothing came close to the mesquite smell and taste that Jose's produce. Sadly though in the 90's Jose's Mexican Restaurant took a huge nose dive the mesquite stack was gone the marinade was different and from that point on the fajitas where not just bad they where terrible. The rest of there food was still pretty good. I could literally kick myself for not at least trying to get that marinade recipe off of them. O well it's forever lost. There is a rumor (true or not) story behind why the fajitas went down hill. But it would take way to long to get into. They also had some of the best chorizo cut potatoes. Now all locations are close and one of the co owners even died not to long ago. The other sad part was the waitstaff at Jose's was fantastic and very friendly. I never once felt unwelcome during that time frame. We got to be good friends with several of the waiters.

Memories from the 50's and 60's:

The Fairway steakhouse on Camp Bowie, next to the water tower. A golf-themed place with great steaks.

The Chicken Shack and Howard Johnson's, also on Camp Bowie. The Shack's chicken had a thick batter coating, and Ho Jo's had fantastic chocolate chip ice cream.

Finley's Cafeteria (later the Black Eyed Pea and currently Lucille's) -- good home cooking.

Grier's Eat Easy -- a little place at 2d and Main that served wonderful barbecue sandwiches for lunch.

Blue Star Inn on Camp Bowie -- delicious Chinese food; owned by Jimmy Dip, who later opened another restaurant on University.

Town Talk -- great place for a hamburger before or after a movie at the Ridglea.

The Mexican Inn on E Lancaster was where Terry and I went to eat on Jan. 16th 1967 the night we got married...Then we spent the night at the Holiday Inn at I-30 and University Dr. The next morning we headed north to New England for a few months and then came back to good old Ft Worth, Tx. for our 45 years together.

Oak Acres BBQ -- it has been there as long as I can remember (back to the late 60's at least). For all of my adult life it has been owned by James Quave (a family friend), but whatever it was that forced the Hip Pocket from that location also pushed James out, IIRC. I may be wrong about this, but for some reason that's how I remember it.

Back in the days before Loop 820, growing up on Heron Drive where nobody had fenced yards, my dog used to make the two-mile trip to Oak Acres to get good bones and scraps. She'd bring those bones back and protect them like they were her puppies. Seems impossible that it was ever so, now.

Oak Acres was still there a couple years ago. My Grandfather built most of the dining room in the back, cutting the timbers for the roof by hand with a hand saw that was as old as he was. My brother and I stopped in one day on a drive through the old neighborhood. James was there and remembered us from the 1960's. the BBQ was still as good as ever but that time I had a beer with my meal.

Hi everybody! I used to live in Fort Worth for the first 23 years of my life. Does anyone remember a little restaurant or bar on 28th street that had a plane on the roof; they made it to look like the plane nose-dived into the building?

I remember the original Griff's hamburgers in River Oaks (there is a Whataburger there now.)
They had arcade machines like Xevous and Pacman and I always pestered my dad for quarters.

And an egg shack that my mom used to frequent that looked like a huge egg in River Oaks.

And who could forget the Clown Burger in Haltom City.

Any pictures?

Thanks,

J. Priestly

Clown Burger in Haltom City. I used to eat there when I went to the old Haltom High School pre 1970. It was a large fresh made burger.
They have now moved to Stanley-Keller Road in Haltom City, although I have not been there. You can find some old pics online at fortworthyesterday.com

In 1964 as a transplant from New England I was treated to my 1st taste of Mexican food at El Chicos on Camp Bowie...Yukk, and I have never had it since. I'll stick to sea food , burgers and fries. My wife (from Ft Worth) loved it and when we went there I would always have their great chicken fried steak...I do like very much though their chips and dip. By the way, my favorite Ft Worth food by far is chicken fried steak just about anywhere, as long as there is plenty of cream gravy on it...

Now that we are talking about food and I am a native of Boston living here in the Ft Worth area now for more than 50 years I am sure we have a few Yankees here on this forum.   The one food I've missed being away from New England is a huge platter of deep fried sea scallops so the last time i visited up north I found a sea food cook who gave me an awesome recipe and I found some Jumbo scallops at the store and I have been enjoying them for a few months now. Any way if there are some of you that crave scallops as I do, I would be glad to send the recipe and exactly how to prepare and deep fry them....Let me know. herbajones@yahoo.com.005.jpg

So glad someone mentioned Goff's Best burgers anywhere. Also, when my family moved to Ft Worth in 57, there was a Spudnut donut shop on Camp Bowie. There's not too many of those around now, a couple in Ohio, but they made AMAZING glazed donuts. I think it was close to where the $1.99 Steak House was a few years later (wonder if anyone remembers THAT one)

Reading in another thread about a prepared food business based in Austin (who knew, I live in Austin and never heard of it) and recommendations for setting up business on W7th,  causes me to ask:

Is the Back Porch still in businees?

The pre-curser (to me) of shops like Subway,  was the Great Outdoors sandwich shops.  Are they still around?

Does anybody remember the old La Familia?  I remember stopping into their location when they were actually on 7th street and Al would bring out my steak fajita taco, loaded wtih guacamole and spicy pico.  One was enough for a lunch and it was wrapped in foil and tossed in a paper sack.  Such greatness.  They probably don't still have that on the menu.

Those were the days....walking into an old Dairy Queen (McDonald's?) and getting the best homemade salsa in the world.  That was a little slice of heaven.

I would love to be able to view these pics and show my Mom! My great grandparents, Gene and Dolores Wooten, owned the Merry Go Round on Berry St. back in the 1960s!!

If anyone has any photos of the building, please share!!!

I've noticed some people here talking about the Merry Go Round burger joint on Berry. Well, It just so happens my granddad was manager of it for years. I also frequested Mama's Pizza a LOT! I still go there whenever I'm in town. Here's some pics of the Merry Go Round!

Welcome to the forum, Bliss!

It looks friskevision hasn't logged in since 2010 so he probably won't see your post. However, looking at the image links I see they were all hosted on what appears to be his own web site: http://www.friskevision.com. That web site still exists and there is contact information there for a Bobby Friske. He signed a post in this thread as Bobby so I'm guessing it's him. You might contact him through that site; maybe he still has the images and can share them with you.

I like this topic! I remember a German restaurant on Jacksboro Hwy just outside of downtown called the Heidelberg Hof, they had really good authentic German food, which at the time was a real rarity in Ft. Worth. I also remember getting cherry cokes at Carlsons on University and the Merry-Go_Round drive in on W. Berry

The Heidelberger Hof German Restaurant is now called Little Germany and the building is located in the middle of the largest area makeover since Jacksboro Hwy was turned into a 4-lane.

As kids of the 1950s, when my family had to drive downtown from the Poly area, we always driven by this Mexican Inn. One day on one of those trips, I asked my dad why we never went to Mexican Inn to eat. His racially insensitive response was "Only Mexican's ate there and we couldn't". It wasn't until decades later, I realized his assumptions were unfounded.

Out of all of the eateries you listed, I can't believe Griff's is only one still open.

Well, my name is Herb Jones and I was born and raised in Mass. but the Ft Worth area has been home now since 1960. That means I have seen many great food memories come and go. Being at Carswell AFB until 1964 my earliest memories would be the River Oaks - White Settlement area where in my 56 Chevy Bel Air, me and my Air Force buddies went to several cruising spots....The Clover on Jacksboro Hi way, Dairy Queen on River Oaks blvd, Caudles A/W drive inn..I can still recall the little chubby girl that car hopped for years, I believe it was the owners daughter. There was a drive-in theater just up the road( The Westerner) we used to go to quite often. Then in Aug of 1964 while cruising further away in my 1964 Chevy Impala Super Sport, in the best night of my life something happened that changed the rest of my life. Me and Jack Wargo (my friend) pulled into the Clover drive- inn on Rosedale in the Poly area and there I met the love of my life. Her name was Terry Rickard and she was with her best friend Sue Ann Donahue. They both went to Everman H.S. I now had a new cruising partner and just about every night we would drive all over Ft Worth to all the places like Carlson's ( the best bacon burgers ever made ) They had 2 sisters that car hopped that were so nice..Ones name was Rose and the other I forgot. The places I remember so much that are all gone now bring back all the great memories of my early Ft Worth days.

Zuider Zee on 7th St and Seminary Dr

Massey's on 8th Ave...still there

The love of my life, friend and companion for 45 years passed away in March 2008. Terry...Oh how I miss her, and all the memories of being together in Ft Worth. Every time I drive around town and pass a place where one of these great memories took place it grabs my heart and I break down in tears. Oh..to bring back the days when a song meant something. The music that young ones fell in love to is long gone.and the kids nowadays will never know what real clean fun really is. I'm just glad I had that chance and made the best of it in good old Ft Worth, Texas.

Thanks for sharing my memories....Herb Jones.......herbajones@yahoo.com

I frequently ate at Colonial Cafeteria on Berry street. Best two things were their tarter sauce and melt in your mouth chicken fried steak. I was lucky enough to get their tarter sauce recipe and have come close to matching their chicken fried steaks by buying frozen chicken fried steaks, setting them out for 30 minutes, sprinkle salt, pepper and powdered garlic and pressure cook them for two minutes in a An Instant Pot. You can cut them with your little finger.

Be glad to:

1    Gallon salad dressing

1    cup mustard

1 1/2 cups dill relish

1 1/2 cups sweet relish

4   cups finely chopped onions

Note: original recipe called for 1/2 cup of finely ground parsley and 1/4 cup vinegar which I chose not to use.

I frequently ate at Colonial Cafeteria on Berry street. Best two things were their tarter sauce and melt in your mouth chicken fried steak.

I'd not heard of Colonial Cafeterias, so I googled them to learn more -- and the first search result led me right back to the Forum. A thread about Colonial Cafeterias from 2007, http://www.fortworth...?showtopic=2702

Sorry, Mayonnaise and I forgot to add that you simply mix all ingredients together and store in refrigerator.  I even make sandwiches out of this.

I do find it odd that there is no online information about Colonial.  The owner was Charles Horan and they were in business for nearly 50 years, from the 20's till the 70's.

There was a place called 'Crystals Pizza Palace' and it had rooms similar to a Clue game, where you could dine. I'm sure there were pinball machines somewhere. Or you could eat in the theater where I remember them showing something along the line of the Keystone Cops. The pizza was tremendous, btw; the olives were kind of spicy. Fabulous Texas pizza. Travelbear do you recall this? Maybe it was Parton's Pizza that was in the 1849 Village.

Loved Crystal's. That's where the Travis Avenue Baptist youth group met after Sunday evening service back then (alternated with Mama's Pizza on W. Berry, which amazingly is still around.) How 'bout the Hayloft on Forest Park Blvd. for chicken fried steak and Brittany's on Altamesa where you phoned in your order from a telephone on the table? Site of my first date. Their specialty? Chili burgers... Does anyone know what that building is now? It's been many years ago for me...

Oh! And Mr. Quick in Wedgwood Village. Meat and bread, nothing else. Delicious...! Caddy corner to the Fotomat.

I loved Crystal's growing up. Is the Crystal's in Irving still open? I took my AAU basketball team over there about 5 years ago and they loved it.

That was Pizza Inn which located at the 1849 Village.

Eidelweiss is located on the Benbrook Traffic Circle not Weatherford. The Weatherford Traffic Circle was razed about 1960.

Wo remembers Carlson's on University Dr? Have you ever tasted a better Baconburger...They had their own special secret sauce that made the difference. For all the years it was there, two sisters were the carhops and were there working almost every night. One was named Rose...Does anyone remember the others name? And there was a motorcycle policeman named Woody, who patroled Ft Worth and showed up at Carlson's every night just to say hi to all us young ones. Who could ever forget Woody, Rose and her sister.

Eidelweiss is still on the traffic circle (if that is the same German restaurant you are thinking of). Not sure how long it has been there. Es schmeckt gut zu mir!

Sammys Restaurant, which operated in a small frame house on the city's north side from 1971 to 2001, will be resurrected Saturday, November 21 for a pop-up hosted by the granddaughters of restaurateur Sammy Pantoja. https://fortworth.cu...ps-potato-soup/
